When I open Firefox now there is an inexplicable and rather long delay before the browser opens.

My decreased performance issue started, I believe, when I tried to update Flash and Java Script, which in Firefox under add-ons, I was warned these were unstable and out of date.

I also have noted some odd programs showing up like "Desktop Gadget Library" in my programs list. I don't know where that came from.

One other issue happened within the last week:

I kept getting ths Explorer EXE no disk error message.

After running ESET, which found several issues, and removed them, the EXE no disk error went away, but then the new slowness issue showed up.

Any thoughts or help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

p22002970.gif Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

p22002970.gif Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Checkmark following boxes:
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware/ to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

p22002970.gifDownload Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE to your Desktop.
  • Unzip downloaded file.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • DO NOT click on the Cleanup button. Simply exit the program.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log-xxxxx.txt and system-log.txt

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

p22002970.gif FSS log is incomplete.

Redo.

p22002970.gif Uninstall Advanced SystemCare Ultimate.

Registry cleaners/optimizers are not recommended for several reasons:

  • Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
  • Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
  • Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes.  If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
  • Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
  • The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Okay. I've thoroughly removed Iobit with Revo. It was annoying me with constant sales pitches anyway to upgrade every time I logged in. I liked a couple of utilities like the file deletion.

I have never been able to get JRT to RUN after installing...it always gives me a 7-Zip Internal Error Code 105

I also have two other annoying programs which I have tried to uninstall but they keep reloading. Both are Enigma products:  Spyware Hunter 4 (I think this is malware even though I paid for it) and Registry Cleaner (which should be removed based on what you've advised about leaving the registry alone). Neither program shows up in my program list but both attempt to load on re-boots.

Running ESET now.

Thanks Broni.

If you know how I might run JRT successfully please advise.

I notice in my active tray both Enigma programs appear to be running despite me trying to block them from loading.

Bitdefender is running. Would it block JRT? I think I tried turning it off before and JRT still would not run.

Possibly.

Delete your JRT file.

Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking.

Download fresh copy and run it from Safe Mode with Networking.

When done...

Neither program shows up in my program list but both attempt to load on re-boots.

Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

p4436801.gif

Upload the file(s) here: http://www.sendspace.com/
Click on Browse button and navigate to the file you want to upload.
Click on Upload button.
Click on FIRST Copy Link button and paste the link in your next reply.

Eventually proceed with Eset.

Hello Broni..

I am having trouble following instructions above. I clicked on the link and downloaded the program. But when I look at the files, none have .exe extensions. One has an autorunsc filename and the other says simply autorun.

When I double-click on autorun extraction takes place. I also try to save as .txt file but cannot retrieve file under name I give it.

An autorun box did come up and program was executing...but I'm not getting this image when I load the second program

p4436801.gif

I am in SAFE mode.

I did delete old JRT and re-installed in SAFE mode but I got the same error as before.

I'm more concerned I am messing up your instructions for Autorun but not sure where I am going wrong.

That SaveAutoRuns Output to File screen is different than the one I get.

I am sure it is something simple. When I open SendSpace and Browse my Autorun.txt file is not in the list that comes up.

Sorry. I am trying!

Thanks.

I am going to run ESET in SAFE mode and at least that will be completed, unless this other has to be done first.

But when I look at the files, none have .exe extensions

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab UN-check Hide extensions for known file types.

You have to unzip downloaded file first. Then you'll see autoruns.exe.

Do NOT try to run autorunsc.exe

Make sure you run Autoruns from normal mode.

ESET completed scan and is clean of infections.

Yeah!

Mozilla is loading correctly and quickly again too.

Yeah!!

I de-activated smiley face emocons (?) in this session. I didn't know how to turn them back on or I'd put one here. I had trouble (spam or malware or something like that) with these things one time (not through Bleeping Computer) so I was cautious to  enable them again.

I DID run autorunsc.exe in SAFE mode before you explicitly warned me not to.

I know...working with techs...I need to do exactly, and no more, than what you are instructing. My bad!

So far I do not notice any bad side effects from running that scan.

Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab UN-check Hide extensions for known file types.

Did this. It worked.

You have to unzip downloaded file first. Then you'll see autoruns.exe.

Did this. Check.

Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

I found it! (the drop-down menu...it said the file already exists; I saved AutoRuns.txt once before without using drop-down, just re-naming extension...but upon search could not retrieve it).

Upload the file(s) here: http://www.sendspace.com/
Click on Browse button and navigate to the file you want to upload.

Did this.

Found the AutoRuns.txt saved in Documents Folder

Run

This is where I am getting STOPPED. I click on UPLOAD and Directory opens. I find the AutroRuns.txt but file will not Drop into sendspace nor can I cut and paste it.

Click on Upload button.

So I am getting stuck here...

Click on FIRST Copy Link button and paste the link in your next reply.

I am also confused by this instruction as I have not seen this First Copy Link button.

Thanks.

Go to http://www.sendspace.com/

Click on "Browse" button.

Navigate to AutoRuns.txt location, click on the file, click on "Open" button.

On SendSpace page click on "Upload" button.

After upload is finished click on the first "Copy Link" button.

The link will copy to your Clipboard.

Go back to this topic, right click inside reply window and click "Paste".

Re-run Autoruns.

Scroll down to "Task Scheduler" section.

UN-check:

+ "\RegHunterStartup"

+ "\SpyHunter4Startup"

In next section - "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services"

UN-check:

+ "SpyHunter 4 Service"

+ "esgiguard"

Restart computer.

Re-run Autoruns and this time right click on each of 4 items above and click "Delete".

Finally, open Windows Explorer and delete following folder: c:\program files\enigma software group

Restart computer and see how it goes.
