So that the detection engine is aware of the latest virus threats. You can turn the alert off if you don't want to be notified of each update.

(Original post was From Wiki History about 3 years ago) -
In 1985, there were 11 known computer viruses.  Today, there are more than 70,000 and new threats are detected every day.  Always update your virus definitions before performing a scan.

Updated to current .... 22,068,148 (approximately 22.1 Million) virus names.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computer_viruses

Would you prefer protection from 11 viruses or currently 22,068,148 known viruses, with more still being added ??

This is the point of updates. Malwarebytes' AntiMalware program updates (on average) about 10 times every day .......

Just some extra information for you Korin  :warrior: and for all that are slow with updates -

Yeah, I guess I'd rather wait 5-10 minutes for to update than deal with viruses.

Thanks guys.

Anti-virus programs automatically update as new definition are released...several times throughout the day. Most users seldom check for updates manually so the automatic process ensures they are protected with the most current definitions. If you turn off automatic updates, then you better have a good memory or you put yourself at risk for system infection.
