Any ideas on why the player would be having a hard time recognizing movie dvds but not music cd's, data cd's or even home movies burned to dvds? It will play movie dvds, but I have to keep inserting the movie in what seems like a few hundred times before it ever recognizes it.

Usually a bad laser/dirty lens on the DVD pickup.  If you can, ck for any dust/garbage on the lens.  I have run across that a few times where burned disks work great, but darned if a pressed one will play correctly.  I usually  end up selling another DVD player/burner.
