How to Repair Windows XP SP3 Without a CD

  • 1

Boot to Windows XP. Sign on as an administrator. Click "Start." Click "Search."

  • 2

  • 3

Choose "Local Hard Drives (C:)" from the drop-down menu. Click the arrow next to "More advanced options."

How large is the Windows partition?  How much free space currently on the Windows partition?

Without sufficient free space on that partition (apporximately 15% of total size of partition)...Windows is likely to malperform.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

List last 10 Event Viewer log

  List Installed Programs

List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link.

You should really consider purchasing a little more ram for your machine.

Total physical RAM: 446.42 MB

The link below will tell you exactly what ram that you need.

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

Also Avira is a bit heavy on resources I would switch to Avast free.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

If you should Decide to unisntall Avira then I suggest that you use Revo Free to Do so.

http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

Also remove Spybot as well it is useless.

Spybot - Search & Destroy (Version: 1.6.2)

Then reset your hosts files.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034

Then remove your primary ide drivers.

Hit the Start  button then Right Click My computer

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Properties>>>>>>>>>>>
Harwdare Tab>>>>>>>>>>>>>Device Manager.
Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers there most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers.

Make sure and un-install All of them.

Reboot your machine.

You will see the drivers re install then request another reboot.

Do so.

Also the only thing that you need at start up is your antivrus.

Open Ccleaner

Hit the tools button then the start up button and then disable all items other than your AV.

Then reboot your machine.

If you should Decide to unisntall Avira then I suggest that you use Revo Free to Do so.

I would suggest not using Revo as Avira has its own removal tool, you can find it here.

I see that you have Ccleaner and Auslogics Registry Cleaner installed on this computer.  BleepingComputer does not endorse the use of registry cleaners or other optimizer tools.

The following was originally posted by Animal, one of our Site Administrators.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in unpredictable results.

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

There are two types indicators for problems in the Device Manager, a yellow circle with an exclamation mark inside it and a Red X.
The Yellow circle with the exclamation mark indicates that a device is conflicting with another hardware device, or the drivers for the device are not installed properly.
The Red X indicates that a device has been disabled, removed, or Windows is unable to locate the device.

If you look in the Device Manager and don't see any of these I would suggest leaving it as it is.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

@InadequateInfirmity

I can't afford more memory right this second, but I'll keep that in mind.

I've tried Avast before and if you ask me it bogs down the system far worse than Avira, in fact of all the antiviruses I've tried Avira bogs down this computer the least.

I did the other things though.

@dc3

I undid everything the registry cleaner did and uninstalled it.

I have not used the registry cleaning features of Ccleaner, I use it to clean out my temporary files.

Is the machine performing any better?

Also I would like to see an autoruns log if possible please.

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.

Also make sure and read this link.

I also read the link, it claims that Ultra DMA mode 5 is the fastest you can get, yet my Primary IDE is in Ultra DMA mode 6. I also have two Primary IDEs and two Secondary IDEs, as opposed to the standard one apiece. Are these problems?

All my IDEs are in DMA mode, BTW.

Open autoruns and untick all of the items undewr the task scheduler tab.

Also disable all of your start up items except avira.

Have you un installed your primary ide drivers and rebooted? If not go ahead and do so now.

FWIW:

I see definitions installed for MSE...and Avira Desktop designated as AV.  If you are running two AVs at one time, that normally results in system symptoms and instability.  I would go with MSE over any 3d-party AV because I believe it's less resource heavy.

If MSE was uninstalled...I have to wonder why the virus definitions are still reflected.

Sophos Virus Removal Tool (Version: 2.3)
Spybot - Search & Destroy (Version: 1.6.2)

I would uninstall each of these, since the Sophos tool may conflict with any AV program installed/used, even though Sophos states that it works alongside existing AV.  If Tea-Timer is used in Spybot, it has been known to cause system problems...and you already have Spyblaster installed.  Spybot is not what it used to be and other tools are thought to be superior these days...Spyware Blaster and SUPERAntiSpysware come to mind.

More is not necessarily better when it comes to system protection programs.

@InadequateInfirmity:

Already uninstalled the IDEs, just did the other two things.

@hamluis:

Both MSE and Spybot were uninstalled before you posted, I always had TeaTimer disabled, too resource heavy.

Sophos is out now, I only installed because I was worried that I might have a virus and wanted to try as many things as possible, I only ever used it once.

From personal experience MSE bogs down my computer, Avira doesn't, so I'm sticking with Avira. I'm just as surprised as you are that MSE bogs me down worse.

Not any better. I don't know why it's like this, it wasn't this bad a few months ago.

Try removing Avira and then re installing it.
