I was advised by boopme to create a thread here for further analysis. I removed the Privitize VPN virus about a month back with the help of this forum, but recently my Facebook started acting up suspiciously. About a week ago, I couldn't log in to my Facebook account, it would just redirect me to an error message, like when a site is usually down. I restarted the browser (I use Chrome, and I tried logging in on other browsers, didn't work) and the computer, but it didn't work. I waited for a while and I could log in eventually, that problem didn't come back. A few hours later I was on another tab, and when I tried to return to the Facebook tab, the computer would just freeze momentarily and stay on the tab that I was on. Everything else would work, including the other tabs, and my programs, but as soon as I clicked on the Facebook tab, my computer would lag out. Closing the tab and opening one again didn't work, only exiting the browser and opening it again did. After that everything was back to normal, and nothing seemed to be wrong with my Facebook. However, every consecutive day so far, the same thing happens at the same time approximately, where the Facebook tab would lag out when I tried to open it, and only that tab. Everything else worked fine. This seems very suspicious and I'm not sure if I have malware on my computer. Yesterday for the first time Chrome put up a pop-up, saying that my Facebook tab had gone unresponsive. This happened when it lagged out at the usual time, and for the previous 8 hours when I was online it worked normally (exact same scenario everyday). I also noticed that a recurring problem (that had been gone for quite a while and started only after I got the virus and removed it) had resurfaced around the same time as this new problem did, where selected icons and all emoticons on my Facebook page would not display on all browsers. Could someone help me please? I really hope that my computer is fully rid of the Privitize virus. Thank you.

P.S. I ran MBAM, ESET online scanner and TDSSKiller, they didn't find anything. However, when I ran Adwcleaner, along with the many other times I did before during the virus cleanup, it deleted quite a number of keys that were different every time I ran it, and this time, it deleted a key that had Privitize VPN in its name which did not show up in the deleted keys in previous runs. I'm wondering if there are remnants of it on my computer? Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/499582 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps in the order listed.
===

thisisujrt.gif Please download
Junkware Removal Tool to your Desktop.
  • Please close your security software to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, right-mouse click it and select Run as administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete, depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open.
  • Please post the contents of JRT.txt into your reply.
===

Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note: Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.
===

Before running this next program please restart the computer normally. It may not run if you do not do a restart.
Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause of infiltration an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

===

Please paste the logs in your next reply DO NOT ATTACH THEM.
Let me know what problem persists.

I was running ComboFix but closed my laptop screen halfway (which caused it to hibernate and go back to the log in screen). When I opened it again it continued from where it left off but i was wondering if that would affect the scan in any way? I also noticed that some file with "privitize" and "industriya" was deleted again. Everytime I run either Adwcleaner or Combofix files with those names just seem to keep popping up (I'm not sure if there are still some Privitize files hidden in my computer or they just can't delete it successfully).

So I am still facing the problems as listed in my original post at the top of the thread. For the past few days I realised something else. If I did not log in to my Facebook at the usual time it lagged and froze, it would just 'wait', so the following time I  went on, no matter what time it was (as long as it was after the usual time of Facebook freezing), it would freeze the first instance I tried to log in to Facebook, and would use that time to freeze again 24 hours later. (For the past week it froze at 12 am everyday. I didn't use Facebook at 12 one day, and accessed it only at 2 pm the next day. It froze immediately, then later instead of freezing at 12am, it would freeze at 2 pm, 24 hours later.)

The following two problems started happening two days ago, and are not just one-time problems. It has happened a few times so far.

Recently I have noticed that whenever I have a Microsoft Word document open for more than 30 minutes, whenever I try to close it, it would stop responding and hang. I would have to use Task Manager to kill it. It does not happen when I close documents that are open for a short while.

Thirdly, whenever I right-click something and click on one of the options (like Select All for example) in the pop-up, that option (and only that option in the bar, the rest of the pop-up will disappear as usual) would stay on the screen, stuck there. I would close all applications and it would still be there. It displays on top of every other open program or browser, and only restarting the computer makes it disappear. This started happening randomly (Happens only a few of the times I click on an option, not all. Sometimes it works normally, with nothing being stuck on the screen) 2 days ago and has never happened to me before. Also, I realised that whenever I right-clicked anything, instead of the pop-up displaying fully, it would display very unclear, like something in the background. It would be blurred and darker than normal, until I moused-over it, only then would it appear how it usually does. This has also never happened to me before. It just used to display normally.

Please help me, these problems seem very suspicious to me and I am afraid that my computer may still be affected, although I hope that Privitize is fully gone. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

You possibly have a virus in Facebook or in your messages.
I cannot see anything that could be malware.

Run these tools.

--RogueKiller--
  • Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit
  • Quit all programs that you may have started.
  • Please disconnect any USB or external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
  • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Then Click on "Scan" button
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
  • click on "delete"
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
  • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
  • The log should be found in RKreport[1].txt on your Desktop
  • Exit/Close RogueKiller+
  • ===

    Please scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the esetonlinebtn.png button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
  • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer.
    Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.png to download the ESET Smart Installer. icon on your Desktop.

  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
  • Scan potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth technology

  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Click the Back button.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • [/list]

Hi nasdaq, I will run Roguekiller in a while as I am out now. I have recently run ESET Online Scanner, on the 26th of June while getting help from boopme. (I was then asked to create a thread in this topic instead). ESET did not find any threats however. Do I still have to run ESET once more?

You also mentioned that I could possibly have a virus in my 'messages'? What are these messages? Thanks.

Also, in my Combofix log, there was this line: "AddRemove-privitize - c:\program files (x86)\Industriya\privitize\1.8.16.22\uninstall.exe". I ran AdwCleaner not long ago with boopme as well, and it detected a file with a similar name, but not the uninstall.exe, it was something else. It did have the words privitize and industriya in it though, even after the clean-up of Privitize. It seems like every time I run a program it keeps uncovering more Privitize files? Could there still be some remnants in my computer? I hope the original clean-up was good enough the keep the virus away.

Thanks.

Hi nasdaq,

The one I just posted was the log created when I used the Remove tool. I have another on my desktop which was created for the scan, but they are exactly the same. Also, I have a new folder on my desktop named RK_Quarantine. In it are the 6 registry entries listed in the above log, 2 PhysicalDrive.dat files and one RK system configuration file. What do I do with this folder?

Thanks.

No need to run ESET again.
===

ComboFix report the removal of an Orphan item. It's gone.

- - - - ORPHANS REMOVED - - - -

AddRemove-privitize - c:\program files (x86)\Industriya\privitize\1.8.16.22\uninstall.exe

===

You can delete the RK_Quarantine folder.
You may want to keep the tool can you can run when you think you have popups.
===

You also mentioned that I could possibly have a virus in my 'messages'? What are these messages? Thanks.

I mentioned it because you refered to some problems with your e-mail.
Delete any message you have no need to keep.
===

Lets check deeper.

Read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.
    tdss1.png
  • Click Change parameters
    settings20121003115955.png
  • Check the boxes next to Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK
    tdss3.png
  • Click on the Start Scan button to begin the scan and wait for it to finish.
    NOTE: Do not use the computer during the scan!
  • During the scan it will look similar to the image below:
    tdss4.jpg
  • When it finishes, you will either see a report that no threats were found like below:
    tdss5.jpg
    If no threats are found at this point, just click the Report selection on the top right of the form to generate a log. A log file report will pop which you can just close since the report file is already saved.
  • If any infection or suspected items are found, you will see a window similar to below:
    tdss7.jpg
    • If you have files that are shown to fail signature check do not take any action on these. Make sure you select Skip. I will tell you what to do with these later. They may not be issues at all.
    • If Suspicious objects are detected, the default action will be Skip. Leave the default set to Skip.
    • If Malicious objects are detected, they will show in the Scan results. TDSSKiller automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects
    • Make sure that Cure is selected. Important! - If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead. Do not choose Delete unless instructed to do so.
  • Click Continue to apply selected actions.

Hi nasdaq, I will do this tomorrow as I have to go now.

Earlier today, around the time I posted the Roguekiller log up til now, the problems that I posted in an earlier post, the one about the right-click pop-up being blurred until I moused-over it, as well as the option in the right-click menu staying on the screen was gone. However, as I just tried to delete the RK_Quarantine file, the blurred pop-up problem came back, and as soon as I clicked on delete, the word along with the bar behind it stayed on the screen.

So my Facebook lagged and froze again 2 hours ago, so it seems like before the Facebook froze, these problems were gone, but after it froze, the above two problems came back. This is very weird.
