The latest icon I put on my desktop keeps doubling.

For instance the last icon I created on my desktop was a folder and whenever I plug in a USB or put in a CD another folder appears right below the original one with the same name. When I try to click on this second folder it acts just like the original folder (opens correctly with the same files inside) and if I try to delete this second icon it ends up deleting both icons from the desktop. If I right click on the desktop and hit refresh the second icon disappears and doesn't reappear unless I plug in a USB and it appears again. This is not a major problem but it is annoying and I'm wondering if it may be a sign of something bigger wrong with my computer.
