Hi,

After my wife inadvertantly clicked on an unknown e-mail attachment, I have been expriencing ongoing problems with my PC.  The first issue was that when clicking on IE, the home-page was/is taking upwards of 3 minutes to load.  An error message is being generated stating 'The webpage is not responding - Recover webpage'.  I am finally able to launch the page, and any pages after this launch immediately when clicked.

Further to this, I realised that there was also an issue with Adobe Reader.  Deciding that I would simply re-install it, I uninstalled using 'add/remove' in the Control Panel, but when I attempted to re-install it, no matter how I tried, I just couldn't.  If I choose the 'save' option, then attempt to run the .exe file from the 'Downloads' folder, the .exe file disappears (to the C:\Users\Lee\AppData\Local\temp folder). If I try to launch it from the 'temp' folder, I can see that it's running in the Task Manager, but the install prompt screen never shows.  I have also attempted to install whilst in Safe Mode (with networking), but am then informed that the 'Windows Installer isn't running'.  Attempting to start Windows Installer up in Safe Mode (with networking) generates an error message stating that it cannot be started in Safe Mode.

I can manually start Windows Installer in normal mode, but again; if I try to install using the .exe file, it is shown as running in Task Manager, but the install prompt screen never shows.

I have tried running the .exe file instead of saving it, and again, the process is showing as active in Task Manager, but it never opens.

Apologies if this in any way fails to conform to the requirements/protocols of the site (I did read the instructions, and have tried my best to abide by them here), but if you are able to offer me any assistance I would be most grateful.

Many thanks.

Welcome aboard p22002758.gif

p22002970.gif Download FixExec.exe to your desktop.
Double click on downloaded file to run the fix.
When the program has finished, it will generate a log on the desktop called FixExec.exe.
Post the log in your next reply.

NOTE. If for any reason you're not able to execute FixExec.exe rename it to FixExec.com, FixExec.pif or FixExec.scr.

p22002970.gif Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

Hi Broni,

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this.  Before I begin to follow the processes you've set out, can you please clarify: am I to perform each of these processes sequentially, then post all of the logs in one long, single post?  Or, do I follow each process in a step-by-step fashion, posting the logs/results one at a time; and then awaiting a response from you before proceeding to the next process on your list?

Kind regards

Do you still have issues with running .exe files?

p22002970.gif Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Alternate download: http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Tools/TFC.exe
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

=============================================================================

p22002970.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.

=======================================

p22002970.gif Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click on List of found threats
  • Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
NOTE. If Eset doesn't find any threats it'll NOT produce any log.

Hi Broni,

Unfortunately yes, I do still have the same problem with some '.exe' files.  Whenever I attempt to run or launch 'Adobe Reader .exe', the run screen shows, but then the .exe file disappears from the folder/desktop where it's hosted (and is relocated to the C:\Users\Lee\AppData\Local\temp folder).  Again, Task Manager indicates that the launcher is running, but even that then disappears.

I will follow the next steps and report back to you.

Thanks.

Hi Broni,

It's odd.  It now appears to only be affecting Adobe Reader .exe.  I was able to download and execute all of the files specified in your list(s), but am still experiencing the same problem when attempting to install Reader.  I say odd because this - and it still taking an age to launch an Internet session - appear to be the sole remaining symptoms (though I should add that once a webpage does finally load, all other pages load as normal).

Please find below the logs from the most recent scans.  Unfortunately, although it found and deleted several 'infected' files, ESET Online Scanner did not generate a log of its own.

and it still taking an age to launch an Internet session

Do you mean launching a browser?

If so which one?

I still need Eset results.

Hi again,

Apologies for the delay in responding.

In answer to your question: both IE9 and Firefox are not launching for at least 2 minutes + after having clicked on them.  So whatever it is, it's affecting both browsers.

Your original advice helped get .exe files working again, with the exception of when I try to install Adobe Reader.

I ran Eset again, and once more, there was not an option to save a log file.  I couldn't work out how to add screenshot to this post, but can provide if you detail how to.

I appreciate that this is a bit of a head-scratcher, but do very much value your time.

Thanks

Let's see about IE first.

Reset Internet Explorer.
Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 and run "FixIt" procedure.
You can use ANY browser to download "FixIt" file.
Make sure you follow ALL steps listed there.

Let me know if IE is better.

I ran "FixIt", and followed all steps successfully.  I closed the IE session, relaunched the browser, but it's exactly the same as before.   :(

Reset Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems

NOTE. If you want to keep your bookmarks and passwords use MozBackup first: http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

Do NOT backup anything else.

Update:  I have managed to install Adobe Reader using an msi isntaller found here  ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.0/

Not sure if this information has any bearing on the web page loading issue, but though it best to let you know.
