Ok, here goes.

We had been experiencing some abnormal sluggishness and unresponsiveness on my wife's HP Mini notebook (Windows 7 Starter, Intel Atom).  This was in the absence of high CPU usage by any listed process.  After adding a few report columns, I discovered an abnormally high number of read AND write operations by the NT Kernel process.  This, coupled with almost continual hard drive usage, led me to suspect an infection.

I tried to run Windows Defender Offline at boot using a flash drive (this was unsuccessful; details available upon request).  Then after connecting the flash drive to the desktop I had used to load Windows Defender Offline, the desktop started exhibiting the same symptoms!

I had been using Microsoft Security Essentials.  Upon a recommendation, I installed Avast! and ran a complete boot scan with high heuristics.  I had intended to include a screenshot of the results, but evidently the forum doesn't want me to upload bitmaps or jpegs.

I have subsequently updated Java (apparently I missed the rev.25 update about three weeks ago) and followed SunMicro's recommendations for certificate verification.  I have scanned the entire boot drive for other JREs and have not found any previous versions before or after the update (update from 7.21 to 7.25).  The symptoms are gone on the desktop machine, but I would like to know whether any additional steps should be taken before I clean the other machine and call it fixed.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

One question;

Do you want the logs all in one post, or each in its own post, successively?

**** End of log ****

USER NOTE: I encountered the 'ASPNET' account before (while trying to get Windows Defender Offline to boot from a flashdrive); if I recall correctly, it appeared in the list of users while booting to safe mode (or recovery mode); I took note of it but did not know what to do about it.  It does not show up on the list of users on the logon screen or in the Control Panel UAC interface.  I did not find an abberant pattern of network activity so I continued the troubleshooting process.

You're infected with ZeroAccess rootkit.

It'll require elevated help.

Please follow the instructions in THIS GUIDE starting at Step 6. If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it HERE. Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.

Roger Wilco.

One more question; if I back up data can the kit hook into the backup storage even if it is not a system or boot drive?

I ask because this machine is old (inherited), and I have been contemplating a wipe and reinstall.  I understand that this problem should be resolved first.

Backing up doesn't make sense at this moment because you'll get infected backup.
