I have an older Gateway laptop that works perfectly fine but it will not connect to the internet.

I thought it might have been the wireless card going bad but even when I plug in directly to the modem it still wont work.

The moden works fine as there are other computers in the house connecting off it with no problem.

Weird thing about it is it acts as if it is working, when I click on the wireless indicator thing in the bottom right corner it says that it is connected, indicator never lights up though like it does on the computers in the house that are connected and working.

I would have tried reinstalling windows but unfortunately I have lost my installation disc.  :(

Thanks much for any help.

What modem router model do you have and did it work before? Use a working computer to download and transfer this program and the created log after running it by a USB flash drive while connected on wired.

Download MiniToolBox and open/run the program.
When open, checkmark or select all options then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

The Modem/Router is from Frontier internet it is a WESTELL model # A90-750045-07

The modem itself works fine I have a desktop wired to it and desktop downstairs as well as a laptop downstairs that work off wireless from it.  Never had any problems connecting with any of them.  Also I forgot to mention I have taken the problem laptop to a couple wireless spots...Library and Mcdonalds and it wont connect to wireless for those either.

I did as you said and with the mini tool box and here is the results log.

The only drivers of those that were listed were http and tcp/ip protical driver, I deleted those and restarted my computer.  Nothing changed and when I went back into the list of drivers it appears those 2 weren't reinstalled.

After reading through the posted thread it seems I need the cds which I do not have, but I will see if I can accomplish anything without cds.

Thanks for all your help so far guys, I really appreciate you taking the time to try to help me.

From that other thread, I followed these instructions but the uninstall button is still not clickable, any suggestons on how to make it clickable?

These steps are copied from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325356
11. Locate the Nettcpip.inf file in %winroot%\inf, and then open the file in Notepad.
12. Locate the [MS_TCPIP.PrimaryInstall] section.
13. Edit the Characteristics = 0xa0 entry and replace 0xa0 with 0x80.
14. Save the file, and then exit Notepad.
15. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
16. On the General tab, click Install, select Protocol, and then click Add.
17. In the Select Network Protocols window, click Have Disk.
18. In the Copy manufacturer's files from: text box, type c:\windows\inf, and then click OK.
19. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Note This step will return you to the Local Area Connection Properties screen, but now the Uninstall button is available.
20. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Uninstall, and then click Yes.

Try locating nettcpip.inf and follow this instructions found from an online link

There is one on the Windows XP CD and there may be one on your hard drive at C:\WINDOWS\inf\nettcpip.inf. Note: To see the inf folder, open My Computer and go to the menu item Tools > Folder Options... > View > and choose Show hidden files and folders.

Right click "My Network Places" select Properties.
Right click the connection(s) and select Properties.
Click Install >Protocol >add >have disk.
Browse to the location of nettcpip.inf .
Select nettcpip.inf then click Open then OK then Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then OK then Close
Reboot

Let's try this... using a flash drive and a working computer with internet connection to download, run and transfer the logs needed.

Download then run Farbar Service Scanner and checkmark all boxes.
Click Scan and then a Notepad text will open. Copy-Paste the report on your next reply.

Download SecurityCheck.exe from Here

ATTENTION!=====> C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\ipsec.sys IS INFECTED.

You will need elevated help from the Malware Experts.

Please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at Step 6.  If you cannot complete a step, skip it and continue.

Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<==  Please include a description of your computer issues, what you have done to resolve them, and a link to this topic.

If you can produce at least some of the logs, then please create the new topic and explain what happens when you try to create the log(s) that you couldn't get. If you cannot produce any of the logs, then still post the topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happens when you try to create the logs.

It would be helpful if you post a note here once you have completed the steps in the guide and have started your topic in malware removal. Good luck and be patient.

If HelpBot replies to your topic, PLEASE follow Step One so it will report your topic to the team members.
