help, help, help!! i have the mysearch bug...and it's driving me nuts! it not only loves to hijack my home page...it loves to knock out my bookmarks, and replace them with its own...as well as putting in it's own toolbar. i have run my adaware, i dl'ed spybot s&d...and i STILL have the darn thing..and it may interest you, as well as your readers, to know that it came from an update for messenger plus!...i know exactly when and where it came from. it has also managed to disable my system restore...i can not go back to the date before it loaded. i have dl'ed hijack this, and here is my log:

My apologies for not getting to you sooner dg. You have something fairly new & I'm still trying to figure it out. Hang in there a little while longer, someone will get to you as soon as possible.

Yes, Messenger plus is know to be bundled with and install malware. Recommend you remove it right away. Uninstall it thru Contol Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

Are you still with us?

papakid...thanx so much for the quick response. since i didn't expect one until tomorrow (tues), this being a holiday weekend and all, i was actually thrilled to hear from you. since i've been dealing with this nasty for a month now, another few days surely won't hurt me. i'd rather you take your time, and we get rid of it all...than hurry the process and leave seeds! and btw..i did remove plus! as soon as i read your response.

i look forward to hearing from you!

ps thanx for the dg..i can't stand it when i'm called 'dam' and prefer either dg or gud.....

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please put a checkmark in the box for each of these entries, close all other windows, and click the fix button:

Then delete these files or directories

C:\Program Files\ClearSearch\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\plancast\
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SEEKSI~1\

Disable System Restore. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

ok...have deleted all the files you recommended with hijack this...however, i have not removed the following yet:

C:\Program Files\ClearSearch\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\plancast\
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SEEKSI~1\

at the risk of sounding like a total computer illiterate, i honestly don't know where to delete them from. i debated whether to run hijack this again, but decided to write first. after i delete the above, i will copy the new log in. and, yes, i have followed your tutorial on how to see hidden files in windows, and followed those directions!

thank you so much for your help thus far; i look forward to hearing from you.

Double click on my computer, then double click on C: drive, then double click on program files. If it does not show anything you will probably have to click on the link to show all files.

Then you should see those directories in there. Click once on the directory you wish to delete to highlight it then press the delete key.

ok, guys...here we go, again!! have eliminated everything you asked in spybot s&d; the new log follows. as for the other 4 files and/or directories, i found one..and several that seemed right; however, i thought i would just write down here whatelse i found, and you can advise:

C:\Program Files\MSNMessenger
C:\Program Files\My Web Search
C:\Program Files\Seek Size For
C:\Program Files\Plus!
C:\Program Files\Okay Cast
C:\Program Files\List Cast Plan
C:\Program Files\ComPlus Applications

i found and deleted clear search, and messenger plus!2
never found the other 2. the msn messenger can probably go; we also have a file in there for msn messenger 6.1, which is the version we use. However, i bow to your expertise!

here, then, is the latest version of the hijack this!

Ok fix these using hijackthis:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://searchweb2.com/passthrough/index.ht...t.net/home.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://searchweb2.com/searchbar.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://searchweb2.com/searchbar.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://searchweb2.com/searchbar.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E2D0520D-E6BD-5A69-CF87-48B801464939} - C:\PROGRA~1\plancast\Bibhtm.dll
O3 - Toolbar: drvstyle - {E659DA32-43D2-5F88-97AD-60D67196755E} - C:\PROGRA~1\plancast\Bibhtm.dll

Then reboot back into safe mode and delete these directories if they exist:

C:\Program Files\My Web Search
C:\Program Files\Seek Size For
C:\Program Files\Okay Cast
C:\Program Files\List Cast Plan
C:\PROGRAM FILES\plancast

well....are you sick & tired of me, yet??? you guys have certainly worked overtime to earn a donation for this one...and just for future readers' info, i have norton antivirus..a legal, paid subsription...when i went to their website with all these problems, i was informed that with one phone call (and $30....have your credit card ready!) they could tell me how to remove this virus...needless to say, i will NOT be renewing...in fact, doesn't take a crystal ball to know that an uninstall is iminent!!

have removed all of the above, however; when i try to remove C:\Program Files\Seek Size For, i get a message that The Grim.exe cannot be removed, access denied..is this important? (yea, i know, is the pope...) you didn't state whether you needed another hijack this! log, either..but you WILL be pleased to know that....all searchbars (of the unwanted variety) are gone...woo hoo!

please let me know if there is anything further you need, or, (rest assured) i will be in touch if it comes back..and guys (&gals) ??? thanx again, so much!! as well as sending a donation..i'm letting everyone know what a wonderful help you were.

best to all!

You get that error when you try to remove the directory when in safe mode?

If so, press control-alt-delete to bring up the task manager. Click on the processes tab and see if you see "the grimm" (kinda creepy name for a file) process listed there. If so click once on it it to highlight it and then press end task so it closes.

Then try to delete the directory.

When thats all said and done, post a new hijackthis log

Thanks for the compliments. I know that everyone here works their butts off and compliments like yours means a lot to us.

:flowers: :trumpet:

this is getting so depressing...just when i think my poor puter is all clean, happy, and well-adjusted, another creep sneaks in. i've gotten rid of a few things between ad-aware and spybot s&d...but, once again, my browser is being hijacked. how do these things keep getting by? i have all of the above, plus norton; i immunize, cauterize, and sterilize...grrrrr!!

here is the latest installment of the ongoing saga, "search for the viral". after this, i absolutely promise not to let my 21-year-old-more-puter-illiterate-than-me-daughter near it. deal??

thanx ahead of time, i know you must be busy...the amount of logs posted since my last visit is staggering. rest assured this will not last forever, son leaves for college and daughter gets married all within the next 8 months...and i don't dl near the stuff they do. i'm too scared!! and even if i weren't, between tuition and wedding costs, i won't be able to afford being online anyway! LOL

It is our pleasure to help so do not hesitate to post!

Ok first click on start, control panel, double-click on add remove programs. Then look for new.net or newdotnet or something like that and uninstall it. After that is completed continue following these steps.

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please put a checkmark in the box for each of these entries, close all other windows, and click the fix button:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "E:\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Memobows] C:\PROGRA~1\SEEKSI~1\TheGrim.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updater] C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\wupdater.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

Then delete these files or directories
E:\qttask.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SEEKSI~1\TheGrim.exe
C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NEWDOT~1 (prob newdotnet)

Disable System Restore. You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

we've got to stop meeting like this!

sorry, couldn't resist.

have done my homework, professor, and the new log follows. however, nowhere did i find a file resembling newnet anything.looked in both c and e drives, hidden files, etc. nothing.

i did, however, get the "grim" out...got the little bugger in safe mode. thanx for the tutorial!

could you answer a couple questions for me? please??

why, when i run hijack this! to delete items, do those items have icons on my desktop when i reboot?

when i ran thru add/remove i found 35 "windows xp hotfix" files....why?

i look forward to your answers.

as always, thanx soooo much for everything!!

This log looks good. Congrats!!!

The reason you are seeing all those backup files when you fix hijackthis on your desktop, is because you are running Hijackthis from the desktop. If you place hijackthis into its own directory those files would instead be placed there. Every time HIjackthis fixes an entry in your machine, it creates a backup file in case you need to restore at a future date.

As for the hotfixes, it is microsoft constantly publishes new security patches, and when you download and install them they are placed in the add/remove programs listing.
