Hi,

Win98 starts and hangs with an error dialog box stating that either RPCSS or LXBTPPLS has performed an illegal operation. Task manager won't come up. Hour glass stays on and on and on........... So I can't close the dialog box.
F8 works to start in safemode. or to initiate DOS. Haven't checked the other options.

I don't know where to start and I'm unfamiliar with the registry end of things. I have a second PC so I have access to the WEB for diagnostic prog downloads etc.

Please, any suggestions?

Hi paddibaldi.
Do you have or ever had a lexmark printer?
If so, boot in safe mode, run msconfig.
On the startup tab, deselect the above entries and any Lexmark related startup apps.
Reboot your system and let us know if it will now boot normally. We'll go from there.

Thanks.
Tried it. Ran msconfig in safemode and I get the same message.

If you want help here, give us the real error message and leave the
inappropriate language at home.

I apologise perfusely for having offended you. That was never my intention.

As I wrote, my PC was in safe mode and tried to run MSCONFIG. I got a the error message that it had performed an illegal operation. Later, I got an error code 0d 0167:BFF72911.

Thank you, and again , I apologise for having offended anyone.

Thanks, Paddibaldi

You didn't tell us which Operating system you have.

But I did find two different Knowledge Base items at MS that refer to the
error code you note above.

Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition which includes a
link also for troubleshooting Win 98.

You will still probably have to follow HitSquad's instructions above after you complete this repair for Win 98SE.
