Hi Everybody,

I posted this topic in the  Windows 7 thread and was advised to move it here. I've organized my post in a block format listing my computer information, issue, and how I've tried to fix it in an effort to make it easier to read. Thank you in advanced for any help you offer.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Problem: I'm having issues getting my computer to start up in normal mode. It almost always freezies up during the start up phase. But it does so at different times. Half the time the computer will power on but the monitor remains completly blank. Somewhat less frequently, the computer will show the Bios information but stop before it gets to the Windows logo. JOther times the computer will freeze once the Windows logo shows up. And if I'm lucky enough to get to the desktop, the computer will freeze while loading the shortcuts.

What I've done: I've suspected that I got a virus because it didn't start behaving this way until right after I made a download and I found my Avast antivirus disasbled and unable to be reinstalled fresh. So I ran RogueKiller, adwcleaner, Malwarebytes, ESET online scanner, and a fresh install of AVG antivirus per advice I've seen other people get on these forums and elsewhere. Everything except AVG said they found something.  I instructed them to delete the questionable files. But if anything the computer started having more problems starting up afterwards. I've also tried running the Chkdsk /r utility but it always freezes in the process.

If you need more information let me know and i'll provide it as quickly as I can. Again thank you for any help you can give.

Through a combination of disabling most of the start up services in msconfig and following a virus removal tutorial on this site I've been able to get this computer to start up in normal mode. And once it starts up it runs fine, if not a little slower than it did before it started giving me problems.

But on average, the computer takes about ten tries to actually do so. Still the most common problem i'm having is the computer powering on but the monitor remaining completly blank. But when the monitor does show BIOS and the other start up screens, t the computer will without a doubt advance to the desktop without freezing at the Windows logo or anytime before it. But at the desktop the computer is still likely freeze to while loading the shortcuts.

I was able to run chkdsk /r and scf / scannow yesterday and they both turned up nothing. I've run multiple virus scanners including those mentioned in the previous posts and they h reported that my harddrive is  clean. And so now i'm wondering if I have a very obscure virus or if some piece of hardware is dying. Any advice on what to try next or insight into what I may be experiencing would be greatly apprectiated. If anyone would like any more information please let me know and thank you for your time.

Hello, lets also look at these.

If needed to complete the scans use Safe Mode with Networking as a boot option.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

RKILL
Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again

(I'd like to see this again)
Please Download TDSSkiller
Launch it.
Click on change parameters-Select TDLFS file system
Click on "Scan".
Please post the LOG report(log file should be in your C drive)

Do not change the default options on scan results.

Please download aswMBR ( 4.5MB ) to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe icon, and click Run.
  • When asked if you'd like to "download the latest Avast! virus definitions", click Yes.
  • Click the Scan button to start the scan.
  • On completion of the scan, click the save log button, save it to your desktop, then copy and paste it in your next reply.

Hi and thanks for the response. Unfortunatley, by the time your reponse was posted I had already reformatted my Hard drive. So I don't know if the scans will be any help now. After the reformat my computer still had the same issues. After inspecting some of my hardware I noticed that my Hard drive was running extremley hot so It and now my computer runs significantly better. It is much more likely to boot into normal mode, and when there it generally runs well.

However, it still ocasionally freezes, it almost never sucessfully restarts, and still has the problem where the computer will show that it is powering on but the monitor remains completly blank. So I think I have a hardware problem. I'm posting the scans you've asked for below. But if you think they are of no help, please disregard them and let me know.
