what happens when you try connecting to the wifi? any errors, or does it look like it connects, and you are unable to use the connection to access the web?

is your laptop wi-fi compatible elsewhere? Have you ever made a wi-fi connection with it? most laptops have a built in adapter to sense the signal, if not, you will need an adapter.  my PDA has a separate wi-fi enabler switch that has to be physically turned on for the wi-fi connection to enable browsing. a whle host of things could be interrupting your laptops ability. we need more details like make/model of your laptop, windows edition..etc. this thread may get moved to to an appropriate operating system forum.
