OK...so we know that the laptop runs Vista...what O/S is on the desktop?

Manufacturer and model for the laptop?

FWIW:   Both desktops and laptops...are PCs.

See if you can boot to safe mode with networking.

How to start Windows in Safe Mode - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-start-windows-in-safe-mode/

If so, then go to http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/dimension-3100c and follow the directions for running the diagnostic package.

Do you have the Dell CDs which should have come with your system?

<<...but the virus has wipped out all my files cant do system restore...>>

What virus are you referring to?

If your system is or was infected...there probably isn't a lot that you can do to repair any damage resulting from malware...without installation disks.

Was this system connected to the other system when the infection occurred?  Were they home-networked?

Just a clarification...a home network is when two or more computers in the home...are able to share files.  If you have a home network set up...and one computer is infected...the infection may spread to the other computers on the home network.  Thus, both of your systems may be infected, which may account for the problems you have described thus far.

I am moving this topic to the Am I Infected forum, where those wiser than myself...will try to assist you.

Same connection, same router...same possible pathways of infection.
