My problem is that any file I download "has a virus" and is deleted immediatly.  Any file downloaded using any browser will fail.

PC is running Window Vista 32bit.  AV program is AVG free.  Started out with AVG free 2011 but in my own process of doing things, I did upgrade it to AVG free 2013, although it is unable to download any new defs or upgrades to the program.  The browsers will say the file has a virus whether or not I have an AV program installed at the time.

I have run ComboFix in Normal and in Safe Mode.  It will tell me that I have AVG running while I am in Safe Mode or in Normal Mode with No AV program installed.  TDSSKiller comes back clean.  MBAM has a clean log.  I don't know what to do.

I have run ESET Sirefef cleaner, a Panda cleaner, RKill and others.  I cannot find what the problem is.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  I am attaching the latest ComboFix log.  It was run as Administrator.  I did see a message stating that it didn't have Administrator permissions to do something somewhere in the 32nd scan area.

Thanks.Attached File  ComboFix.txt   11.1KB   2 downloads

That link helped.  It led me to an AVG link that had me physically remove old folders in the AppData\Roaming folder.  I can now download files from IE and other browsers.  One problem still exists.  I cannot download Windows Updates.   I get a Code 80096001 error.  I had also installed Microsoft Security Essentials now that I can download things from my browser.  When it tries to update, I get the same error.  Any thoughts?

Lets check further.

Search and delete the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete tab follow the prompts.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).
===

thisisujrt.gif Please download
Junkware Removal Tool to your Desktop.
  • Please close your security software to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or 7, right-mouse click it and select Run as administrator.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete, depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open.
  • Please post the contents of JRT.txt into your reply.

Please download ComboFix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
3. Do not install any other programs until this if fixed.

How to : Disable Anti-virus and Firewall...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt
Note: Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

===

If all is well:

Time for some housekeeping
  • The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:
  • ComboFix /Uninstall
===

To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Uninstall.
Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure to delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.

Surf Safely, and Think Prevention!

ok.

I will get to cleaning up the Adobe Reader install as well as upgrading Java.

I uninstalled the tools we used.  We didn't use DDS so I didn't do anything there.

I ran msconfig and did a normal boot.  I turned Microsoft Security Essentials back on.

Rebooted.

MSE was successful in downloading its updates.

Windows Updates still fails with the same error.

Let see if we can restore that file.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

If not successful let me know if you have access to an other Vista operating system.
We may be able to get the files from that system.
