Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computer forum  :welcome:

Unfortunately, intermittent issues are one of the difficult fault to troubleshoot. Please follow the below steps to collect some basic info about your system.

1 ) Generate a report about your system using Speccy by reading the guide below.

Post the web link displayed by Speccy in next reply.

2 ) Download and run Minitoolbox from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.

-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output in next reply

After reading your logs, either me or any other forum volunteer will assist to you to diagnose the issue.

Edit:

Don't ever use the registry cleaning function in CCleaner or Glary utilities. Only use them to clean the temp files. Using registry cleaners may cause unpredictable damage to the registry. If anyone properly knows which registry keys are garbage, that is only Microsoft

<<Background: We recently upgraded osfrom XP to Windows 7 but had many of the same peoblems before.

- big fan of CCleaner and Glary tools.>>

FWIW:

Glary products are, IMO, pure junk used by those who don't know better....Ccleaner has a registry cleaner function that when used...probably does more harm than good in the Windows registry...and if you failed to do a clean install when going from XP to Windows...I would expect that you would have issues of some sort.

If your issues carried over...or seem to have carried over because you are using the programs mentioned still...that might also indicate hardware issues of some type.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons

    a. Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

    b. Per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry , “the Windows registry stores all application settings in one logical repository (but a number of discrete files) and in a standardized form.  The registry contains important configuration information for the operating system, for installed applications as well as individual settings for each user and application. A careless change to the operating system configuration in the registry could cause irreversible damage, so it is usually only installer programs which perform changes to the registry database during installation/configuration and removal.  If a user wants to edit the registry manually, Microsoft recommends that a backup of the registry is performed before the change.  Editing the registry is sometimes necessary when working around Windows-specific issues e.g. problems when logging onto a domain can be resolved by editing the registry.  The Windows registry can be edited manually using programs such as regedit.exe, although these tools do not expose some of registry's metadata such as the last modified date.”

Put simply, the Windows registry is a central repository of information about all aspects of the omputer - in particular, its hardware, operating system, applications and users.

Again, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner : "A registry cleaner is a class of third party software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system, whose purported purpose is to remove redundant items from the Windows registry.  Registry cleaners are not supported by Microsoft, but vendors of Registry cleaners claim that they are useful to repair inconsistencies arising from manual changes to applications, especially COM-based programs..

The necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts in disagreement over their benefits. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware are often associated with utilities of this type..  There is a popular misconception that the value of registry cleaning lies in reducing "registry bloat". Even a neglected registry will seldom contain more than two or three thousand redundant entries. Bearing in mind that the modern registry may contain more than a million entries, the elimination of two or three thousand will not save any noticeable amount of scanning time.

Some registry cleaners make no distinction as to the severity of the errors, and many that do may erroneously categorize errors as "critical" with little basis to support it. It.  Removing or changing certain registry data can prevent the system from starting, or cause application errors and crashes.  A poorly-designed registry cleaner may not be equipped to know for sure whether a key is still being used by Windows or what detrimental effects removing it may have. This may lead to loss of functionality and/or system instability.

While it is true that some registry cleaners are safe, these cleaners do not improve performance. The rest are a mix of snake-oil, actual malware, or dangerously powerful tools unsuited to non-professionals.”

For the reasons pointed out above and others…BC does not encourage/suggest that any member use a registry cleaner.

Hi

Your event log shows nothing serious. Can you describe the exact problem you are facing ?

Did you experience spontaneous restarts ?

In which stage POST fails ? (for example, freeze in the BIOS screen or a black screen when booting )

Can you reproduce the crashes by running any specific software ?

Hi Anshad,

Spoke with my wife - for the past 4 months:

1. problems don't seem to have a particlar pattern

2. doens't have spontanieous restarts, but will at times (2x a week), shuts down on it's own, or enters sleep mode and can't wake it up (have to to do a hard reboot)

3. upon booting up, always comes to the initial screen with FAILED TO POST error, then allows me to press F! to continue

My wife is a graphic designer so she is always downloading fonts and images from the web - she has picked up a few bad virus over the last 2 yrs, so i thought her issues might have to do with:

1. the virus, or the fix to the virus

2. too many virus sw running at the same time, or

3. uninstalled virus sw that wasn't quite all uninstalled

or:

4. running CCleanber and other sw on her register

5. her upgrade from XP to Win 7, also done about 4 months ago, wasn't done quite right (down by outside firend)

Anything else i can try running or provide more information to?

Appreciate your help!

-Lou

Hi

It is really hard to say what is the culprit as there is no specific pattern. As a general troubleshooting, please follow the below steps.

1 ) replace the HDD SATA cable and also reset the power connector. If you don't have a spare SATA cable, borrow the one from DVD drive.

2 ) Clean any dust inside the PC. You can use canned air to clean accumulated dusts inside the machine. Before opening the cover, touch your hand in an unpainted metal part of the cabinet to discharge static electricity

3 ) Use the free version of malwarebytes to scan and clear any infections.

While installing MBAM , don't put a tick mark in Start trial . We only need the on demand scanner.
