I am finishing up recovering from a malware episode.  Thanks to boopme and all you other fine people.

Now I could use some new help.

I am missing the help center.  I am on Windows XP Sp3.  I ran SFC and followed directions which was Go to c:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf.  Right click to copy and install dataspec.xml from my copy of Windows xp from I386.  That is where my problem starts.  I can not find that file dataspec.xml on my copy of Windows XP and start the re-install.

It seems like dataspec.xml does not exist.  Any advice out there?  Am I looking wrong, or is there another way I can recover the help center.

Thank you ahead of time!

Leon

I would simply reinstall XP SP3, since it contains many files which have been updated...and it may reflect the missing file you reference.

Reinstalling SP3 cures many similar problems, IME.

Click Download button at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=24 to download SP3 to your desktop, then install it from there.

Thanks Louis.

I did the download and rebooted after the install.  Regretfully it did not work.  I clicked on help and support and the pop up came up again.  Helpctr.exe is still missing.  So, I am, ready for any other suggestions.

Stupid malware.

To restore Help and Support in XP, click on the link below:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to #235 and click "Restore Help and Support Service" in the left column. Go to File, choose "Save page as" All Files and save helpnsupport.reg to your desktop. Double-click on that file and choose "Yes" to merge it into the registry when prompted. Once you get a successful message delete the file and reboot.
