My computer has been hijacked by "about blank". I have scanned it in the safe mode with Spybot and Adware se and have eliminated some spyware but "about blank" is still taking over my internet explorer. I have also run hijackthis. See log posted below. Any help you can give on removing this is appreciated. I have also read about several products that can be purchased to remove "about blank" and didn't know if I should just purchase one and if so what the best one is.

Hi there and welcome to Bleeping Computer !
As you may have noticed already, the forums are very busy at the moment and i have noticed your log has gone unanswered so far!
We look at the oldest logs first, and we were wondering that if you still need help, please start by posting a new HijackThis log in this topic and i will then be able to take a look!
Thanks very much :flowers:

See new log below. I have eliminated about blank by doing a system restore to an earlier point, however, there are still several problems on the computer that my anti-virus software is identifying but I haven't been able to get rid of yet. One points to the following c:\System Volume Info\_Restore 202550A-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F, which I have identified as W32/Backdoor.HIA. I have noticed that it has slowed down internet explorer and this morning it wouldn't respond to opening the msn.com site. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Hello patsfan!

I saw an infection in your previous HJT log, but you seem to have been able to remove it. I'm not sure it was an About:Blank infection, but a smit.trojan family infection. I want to see if you have anything else lurking in your computer, before we clear up the rest. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
David

Hi patsfan!

A few bad files we need to remove, let's get them!
Download KillBox from here
Unzip the folder to your desktop.
Don't run it yet.

* Start Killbox.exe
* Select the Delete on Reboot option.
* Click on the All Files button.
* Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\gdnUS2218.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\gdnUS2218.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\1024
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ld42E5.tmp

* Go to the File menu of Killbox, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
NOTE: You must use the file File menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
* Click the Delete File button that is a red-and-white X. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Please post back with a new HJT log after the reboot and let me know how the computer is running.
David

I've seen two programs in your Hijackthis log that I recommend you uninstall. They are both doing no good for your system and are often bundled with spyware that may have caused these. Firstly Weatherbug provides current outdoor temperature in the System Tray, also weather alerts. If you use it and like it then do not uninstall it in a sec. The second one is MyWay. "The Toolbar displays algorithmic search results from Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo and LookSmart, along with sponsored listings, primarily from Google." I would highly recommend that you remove both, bot ultimatley the choice is yours. If you do a Google search on each of them you will finds lots of reviews, stories about the program.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs. From within add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist by double-clicking on the following entries, if you want to of course:

MyWay
Weatherbug

The next thing I need to ask is if you know anything about the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [REWARDS NETWORK] C:\Program Files\Rewards Network\brntray.exe

It's smells like spyware to me, but I wondered if you knew what it was?

Please post back with that infomation and a new HJT log.
David

Hi David,

Deleted both Weather Bug & My Way Search Assistant. Never used the Search Assistant. The Weather Bug has been on the computer for a couple of months. It was nice to see what the temperature was etc., but if it has been linked to Spyware there are other ways to get that. Regarding the Reward Network Program. I am a big sports fan and often listen to a Boston sports radio station, WEEI. Can access the station online at www.weei.com. You can win prizes by answering sports trivia etc. and that program is part of it. The computer has been responding quite nicely, although this morning my anti-virus program did bring up a message re: System Volume Info\_restore{202550A8-7A33-44BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP203\A0016554.exe being a suspicious program. New log posted below.

This is good news, i'm glad to see the REWARDS NETWORK is something that you use and trust, we can leave it alone. The notifcation you are getting is just of a system restore entry that has been infected, but following the list below will take you through some steps to purge this list and remove the infected ones. Also, The fact that your system got so infected in the first place shows me that you are lacking slightly in protection. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Now that you are clean, lets reset your system restore points please follow these simple steps in order
  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Clickthe System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart your computer
  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs: hide
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

I would recommend Grisofts© AVG or AVAST©. As these are the more secure and better ones.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
I would recommend ZoneAlarm© as a firewall as it's easy to use. But for a more secure firewall, Sunbelts Kerio© is the one.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly
  • Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
If you have any addition questions just ask...
David

Thanks for all your input. I will go through and complete the steps you indicated later today and will let you know how things go. One thing I did notice is that if I am in Internet Explorer on a particular website and type another site in the address line and click on the Go arrow, nothing happens. It doesn't seem to respond and it just stays on the site I am on. If I use favorites and select a site it will go to that site. Any ideas?

Hi patsfan! I've been looking around for a solution to your problem but am stuggling at the moment. I recommend that you post a new topic in the Internet section of the site here:

Ok, thanks David for all your assistance. I have run Spybot, Ad-aware and have installed the Spyware Blaster. I think it is great! I will put another post in the internet forum.
