I have noticed some erratic behavior with my laptop for several months now.  One of my bank accounts was compromised around the time I started to notice this.  Web browser redirects, programs just shutting down or freezing, no access to folders on desktop or even my computer.  Green bar never fills up after attempting to open folders for several minutes.  I often get obscene amounts of out bound connections through Comodo, but I don't know if that is relevant or not.  Explorer will freeze and windows with stop responding.  As of this posting, 30 minutes ago I had no issues.  Within that time I have lost ability to open folders.  Pictures reneder fast, but the viewer often times freezes or crashes.  I can open programs like mozzila, VLC plays videos.  I can get into control panel, but I can't open my computer. I can open PDFs without an issue, but like pictures, the viewer freezes when closing and go through a "not responding" moment before shutting down.

The fact that I currently cannot access almost all folders on my laptop now has been the nail in the coffin.  MWB comes up with nothing in scans and neither does my full time AV, Rising.  I'm starting to think my computer was compromised and maybe it's some type of rootkit or something.

Update: Ran Malwarebytes in safe mode and came up with two infections: (1) Heuristics.Shuriken & (5) Exploit.Drop.9

Once I cleaned that up, folders seemed to be opening again.  Ran Malwarebytes in normal Windows and came up with the following deected infections: (1) Heuristics.Shuriken, (2) Rootkit.0Access, (1) Trojan.Agent.ED.  Ran Malwarebytes once again and came up with nothing, but folders were not opening again, as of 9:02am on 6/14/13.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/498005 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

I had some issues with the steps you asked. I will address in bullet points below:

  • Rogue Killer was problematic for me.  When I first ran the program it "killed" a SVChost.exe process.  It then automatically rebooted my computer.  After start up I ran the program one more time.  Same SVChost process was "killed" and it then moved to "searching for policy Hijacks..." which immediately identified 2 registry keys with labels of "HJ Desk".  Unfortunately, the program was stuck at this point for 15+minutes.  I stopped the program and tried it again to only get the same results.  At this point I moved onto the next step.
  • AdwCleaner was run successfully and the reports are below.  For some reason two reports were generated, but I don't recall having to run it twice.
  • JRT was run successfully and the report was placed on my desktop, but now it says it is marked for deletion, like all of the other reports on my desktop. I had to go under the C:/ drive to get my AdWare and ComboFix reports.
  • ComboFix was run after I shut down my Rising AV and Comodo Firewall.  Unfortunately, ComboFix kept telling me those 2 programs were still running.  When I tried to kill a Rising process, access was denied.  Comodo had a process running that I could not find or see.  I decided to delete Rising and Comodo and then run ComboFix.  Everything went smoothly and the report generated is below.  Unfortunately, my Mozilla and IE tabs no longer worked and I got a message that said "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion".  Lucky I had a download of chrome on my PC and I installed that to gain internet access for this posting.  I also received this same text warning box when I tried to click on Rogue Killer or Security Check.
  • I was not able to run Security Check because it seems ComboFix or JRT somehow disabled those programs.  Since I also had to delete Comodo and Rising to run ComboFix, I'm not sure it would have been accurate as to what i use anyways.

UPDATE: I re-booted my computer once posting this and all icons returned back to normal functionality.  ComboFix rebooted once on it's own, but after completion, I guess it needed to be rebooted again.  I have run Rogue Killer and Security Check and included the report info below.

You should re install Rising and Comodo if not already done.
===

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

How to disable Java in your browsers
http://www.infoworld.com/t/web-browsers/how-disable-java-in-your-browsers-210882

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 17

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
http://www.benedelman.org/images/iac-jan13/ask-iac-011613-small.png
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.
===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

Please let me know of any remaining issues with this computer.

I have had major issues since these scans were run.  It seems that registry errors were created and I cannot get into Windows in normal mode.  Seems a comodo file "inspect.sys" is causing BSOD errors.  Windows in normal bootup gets to the Windows & login screen and then reboots repeatededly.  I can get it into Safe Mode, but not with networking.  I've tried to update the BIOS and Power Manager drivers (recieved a registry error related to Power Manager) and still nothing.  Can't run Thinkvantage tool "system update" in Safe Mode, so that all drivers and files can be downloaded and installed from Lenovo, because Windows installer doesn't work in safe mode.  My Lenovo Rescue and Recovery disk I made is for XP and not Windows 7 ( I upgraded).  Booting with the Windows 7 cd does not work.  Files start to load and nothing happens.  Start up repair gives me no problem result.

Also, my laptop now gets crazy hot and seems to now shut down at a certain threshold and just prior to that, starts acting quirky by sometimes freezing up on the Windows 7 spalsh screen.  I want to lastly try to restore the registry to its pre-scanned state, but I worry about registry malware, if there is such a thing, that might have been on there. IIRC one of those programs you had me use backed up the registry through ERUNT, so I assume it's somewhere on the hard drive. I also cannot restore from an earlier point in "system restore" because my last point was 6/14/13 and thats the day after I found all of that malware I mention in the first post of this thread.

I'm at a loss as to what to do.  If restoring registry does not fix it, I assume I have to buy another hard drive and reinstall windows 7 again.  Thoughts...?
