The update history showed SP1 has been installed several times but I keep getting updates for SP1.

If I right click on My Computer and check properties the Windows Edition does not show SP1.

MS website help is useless, can some one show me how to resolve this.

Well...to begin with...you should have had SP2 installed a long time ago.

To check is SP2 is installed, see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/learn-how-to-install-windows-vista-service-pack-2-sp2 .

And...there are critical updates which have come since SP2...that should have been installed.

In any case, you can reinstall SP1, it won't hurt anything.  Then install SP2.  Then install all critical updates since SP2.
