Sorry about that. I ran out of characters in the title.

My question is, I have a Dell Latitude D610 computer with Windows XP Professional as the OS, and it has an optical drive, a CD/RW, DVD-ROM drive. I purchased an external DVD burner recently, and when I tried to install it to burn DVD's, for some reason, the machine detected there was new hard drive on it, but when I looked in the My Computer section, the external hard drive didn't appear on there, and this is strange because every time I plug in my printer or my mp4 player, it detects them and lets me do whatever I want with those drives, but I don't know what's up with the DVD-RW drive I bought. Could it be possible that a computer that already has internal optical drive, like an internal CD-RW drive, the user cannot use an external DVD burner on the machine? I hope I made sense. This DVD-RW external drive, in the other Dell Computer I had, a Dell Inspiron Mini 1010, it had no optical drive at all and I used to use it on that computer all the time.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Does the external drive have a disc for the drivers? If so you can try the control panel > 'add new hardware' then when it asks for drivers you can say use disk. This should work.

I don't have the disc to the external DVD-burner, no, but I suppose I can order it off the internet somewhere. Thanks for the help!

If you have the exact make and model information you might be able to download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
