Rescue Disks blocked from update?

I have not seen this before, but three times in the last two weeks, I have booted with a rescue disk (Bit Defender, AVG, Kaspersky, Trendmicro) and they break in the middle of updating the database. It seems to happen on computers that are pretty far gone (so far gone, no MS based tools can fix it). 


I find it disturbing mostly because I'm not sure exactly what is going on. 



Any thoughts?

As a result, they can't effectively run.
