Hello, I am having trouble shutting down Windows 7 (it freezes).  Generally, in this situation, I turn off the ASUS N61Jq laptop after 15 minutes because it gets very hot.

But because it was improperly shut down, this means that I have trouble booting up again.  Sometimes, I try to load up Windows normally -- then it will freeze at various places.  I turn off the computer, repeat, it freezes someplace else.  Sometimes, it will load up everything and then freeze right after.  Other times I try Safe Mode, where it usually will work, but sometimes it too will freeze upon Shut Down or just get stuck after it finishes loading.

In another bad situation, it got stuck in a StartUp Repair loop, whereupon Startup Repair can't repair, and upon trying to boot-up, I get sent to StartUp Repair.

In general, I can succeed in booting up by either StartUp Repair (one time it rolled back registries), Chkdsk, or last good configuration.  I now have a System Restore point and I try to back up and create new points as I can.

I have been trying to update the drivers.  However, the ASUS support site is outdated and when I downloaded a driver update from there, it disabled some of my audio drivers.  That part is fixed now -- I finally went outside of ASUS to download the correct audio driver.

I have been trying to uninstall programs (such as Google Chrome through some Google Update service) that I thought might be causing problems.

I have deactivated services through msconfig -- all programs associated with Apple (devices that are not usually connected to the laptop plus iTunes had been giving me problems) and WD (my external hard drive that may or may not be connected to the laptop at all times).

I have been through a malware/spyware flush.  Thread linked here.

<<I have been trying to update the drivers.>>

There is absolutely no need to "update drivers" as long as the given function is working properly.  When drivers get damaged, system hiccups may result...those drivers need to be uninstalled and replaced by drivers from either the Drivers CD or downloaded from the component manufacturer's website.

Many don't seem to understand...your AV, your other system protective programs, and Windows...all need to be constantly updated...in order to have the best possible defense against malware.

A driver is analogous to a system file, IMO...in that it only needs to be replaced when it is clearly apparent that it impairs the system in some way...or updating to a new provides some functionality that did not exist in previous versions of that driver and the system user desires siad functionality.

FWIW:  Any time that you perform a hard shutdown, there is the danger of system files being damaged.  As a general practice...you should run the chkdsk /r command the next time the system boots into Windows...to try to neutralize such.

I will try the chkdsk Ty.

The problem existed before driver updating for audio. I was having issues with playback. IE still crashes intermittently and at the time Windows Media Player was having errors. I had no sound, for instance.

OK, still working on the Snapshot.  I am still having the Shutting Down problem, but the bootup has been mostly successful.

Name: Intel Core i7 740QM
Code Name: Clarksfield
Package: Socket 989 rPGA
Technology: 45nm
Specification: Intel Core i7 CPU Q 740 @ 1.73GHz
Family: 6
Extended Family: 6

Rated Bus Speed: 2128.1 MHz
Stock Core Speed: 1733 MHz
Stock Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Average Temperature: 99 °C

Since the max operating range is 0-100 Celsius...I'd say that's probably your problem.

You also seem to have a McAfee problem, which may be related to the temperature situation or may not.  In any case, McAfee also could be responsible for problems, if it is damaged.  I would uninstall/reinstall (if committed to McAfee)...uninstall/replace with MSE if not committed.  By committed...I don't mean that you paid for it, but rather that you are locked in to using it, as opposed to anything else.

Well...you seem to have another candidate :)1 Drive c: (OS) (Fixed) (Total:116.44 GB) (Free:5.29 GB) NTFS , that clearly indicates insufficient free space on the Windows partition.  Suggested range is circa 15% of total partition space should be free space...in order for Windows fo function effectively.

I'd remove the ZA toolbar.  I would not expect McAfee software and ZA software to play well together and I don't consider either a necessity on any system.

Those are the items i would focus on, were it my system.

I have uninstalled Mcafee, put an icepack under the laptop while I attempt to clean the Targus cooling fan, but I cannot find ZoneAlarm under Uninstall Programs.

I am still experiencing same issue of getting frozen during shut downs and booting up.  I notice that it seems to be correlated when Windows Update asks me to update (most of the time it's virus definitions), so I download whatever it is

Do you have any other suggestions? I am having this problem every time I shut down the computer now.

When I was stuck before, and I could not even get to the windows screen, when I was in the infinite start up repair loop , I fixed it by restoring the registry. That is what caused the windows media player to need to be reinstalled. It was doing alright for a while. I have a feeling that what the McAfee technician did to repair the McAfee antivirus program since that wasn't working at the time maybe that is causing these problems right now since I have uninstalled the program.

No...I don't have any other suggestions.  I've made my guesses as to what requires attention, but I could be wrong...they are only guesses.

I have now reached the point I was in about a month ago. Infinite Start Up Repair loop. The laptop is unable to Shut Down properly and when trying to Boot Up, I am sent into StartUp Repair which cannot repair. I do have a backup on an external drive, but I haven't restored from back up yet, it is from 6/21, it says.

When scanning with MalwareBytes and MSE, 3 Trojans were detected on external hard drive (though the laptop itself had no detections). I quarantined those using the antivirus programs.

I have been told that inside the laptop might be a lot of dust, keeping it very hot. Any tips on how to go about taking apart the laptop so I can blow the dust out. The vent is not big enough to stick the compressed air into it.

My issue appears to be the same as described in this thread:
