Over a period of several weeks I've been experiencing spontaneous shut downs on my HP Pavilion dv7 laptop (Windows 7). There doesn't appear to be any correlation with what the PC is being used for at the time. Shut downs can happen when the computer is unattended; or when in use with (seemingly) any application -the screen suddenly goes black, there's a click, and the machine dies.

I don't believe it's due to overheating -The fan isn't running at high speed when a shut down happens. [The fan does run at high speed other times (intensive processing).]

A couple days ago I discovered that Windows Firewall wasn't turned on. When I tried to start it I got a msg saying the settings were not what's preferred, prompting me with a button to change to the preferred settings. When I click on that button I get a spinning wheel; eventually it stops spinning but nothing has changed.

My boot disk is an Intel 520series SSD. I've used the Intel SSD Toolbox -it tells me all is well with the drive.

I ran Check Disk in Safe Mode -it ran through all stages, no errors found.

I did a scan with Malwarebytes -nothing found.

[not sure if this is a related issue:  Lately the PC has been taking much longer to establish a network connection -seems to me it used to be almost instantaneous after booting or waking from sleep; now it takes something like 30 sec. to connect to the internet.]

now it takes something like 30 sec. to connect to the internet.

This part can be perfectly normal, and could just be local, national or even Router conditions (you do not list your country or area).
<< I ran Check Disk in Safe Mode >> Looking for problems, you would run this in Normal Mode with chkdsk /r -

Download Screen317Security Check from Here and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt;
* Please Copy / Paste the contents of that document back here.
NOTE: If any one of your security applications requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Please download MiniToolBox to desktop to run it.
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
■Flush DNS
■Report IE Proxy Settings
■Reset IE Proxy Settings
■Report FF Proxy Settings
■Reset FF Proxy Settings
■List content of Hosts
■List IP configuration
■List Winsock Entries
■List last 10 Event Viewer log
■List Installed Programs
■List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go at the bottom and post the result (Result.txt).

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Free (aka SAS) to desktop.
Check for latest updates if not done during the download.
You can check "Remove" for any infections found.

The program may ask you to Reboot if several infections are found.
Run a Quick Scan only and Copy / Paste the Report log back here when finished -

You noted that you have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (aka MBAM) installed.
Please open the program and select Updates, to check for current version.

Then do a Quick scan only.
Copy and Paste the Report Log back here when finished -

Finally Publish a Snapshot with Speccy << Follow these directions

Later we can add a program like Speed Fan to monitor your temps if you do not have one yet.

Thank You -

Thanks for your very quick response!

I couldn't be as quick to follow-up --yesterday my laptop shut down and would not reboot (2 sec. into the reboot process it would shut down again!).

I thought the machine was dead. But (astoundingly) this morning it booted and has not shut down (fingers crossed).

Here is the report from Security Check:

Speccy link:  http://speccy.piriform.com/results/KwsP7QnauV7fw0IKecDGPmL

This should complete my responses to your instructions.

BTW . . My location is Calgary, Canada. [I'm old enough to still be amazed that I'm able to receive immediate expert assistance from someone on the other side of the world!]

I'll be very grateful for any additional assistance you can provide.

Hi -

Just a quick reply (from here) while I look over these, and we do prefer Copy / Paste for as many logs as you can -

Mid morning here and still a bit chilly, so I am on coffee number 3 -

Thanks -

EDIT - Sorry it has taken so long, as it seems that my internet is not fully connecting

I am posting from another computer.

These are the readings from Speccy S.M.A.R.T. Note these may not be 100% true, but they are very odd -
This shows 2 Hard Drives installed, but only one has usage P.O.H. (Power-On Hours) against it.
Hard Drives :
168GB INTEL SSDSC2CW180A3 (SSD) 09 Power-On Hours (POH): 000 (000)
466GB NULL (SATA):  40 °C - 09 Power-On Hours (POH): 056 (056) , NULL, Manufacturer:  Unknown manufacturer

Have you had a second Hard Drive installed, 168GB INTEL , that is a normal size, but not active.
The 466GB NULL (SATA) is a large drive, but only registers 56 hours usage. Do you have an External Drive installed ?
Just noted Drive d: (media backup) (Fixed) (Total:488.28 GB)

To Errors - Code Integrity is unable to verify the image integrity of the file \Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\lgscroll.dll because the set of per-page image hashes could not be found on the system.
For this I would ask for a disk check first and then a sfc /scannow.
Run a Disk Check on your C: drive in Windows Vista or Windws 7:
• Click the Start button and open Computer
• Right-click on C: or your nornal Hard drive letter, and select Properties
• Click on the Tools tab
• Under Error-checking click the Check Now... button and click Continue at the User Account Control prompt
• Mark the 2 boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
• Click on the Start button
• When the message box pops up, click the Schedule disk check button and Restart your computer
• Once your computer restarts it will check the drive, don't press any keys so that it is allowed to do so
This will take usually 1 hour or more (on average) depending on your computer and installed programs
After it completes the 5 stages, it will reboot back to a normal screen.

For sfc /scannow - Go > Start > Accessories > Find Command Prompt and Right click on it to select Run as Administrator.
No disks are needed. Type sfc /scannow (note the space between c and / as it must be there. Press ENTER.
This should only take 10 to 15 minutes to run (on average) and reboot back to your desktop when completed.

MBAM and SAS only show Tracking Cookies that are not bad, but are good to clean out often.
Adobe Reader is now XI (Eleven) and be sure to untick any offers (Google Chrome) during install.
The older versions can now be removed from Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Please download on the Desktop the following application: Windows Repair
Next, extract and launch the Repair_Windows.exe
Click on Start repairs tab > click on Start
Check mark following options alone

Reset registry permissions
 reset file permissions
 Repair WMI
 Repair Windows Firewall.
 Remove Policies Set By Infections

Checkmark Restart System When Finished option
Then click the Start button
System should restart after repair

Any reports are better to be Copy / Pasted, so they are more easy to read -

I have added all of these in one post, due to the fact that I have been MIA most of the day (sorry)

Take your time and report any problems with any of these directions -

Thanks -

Re the Speccy S.M.A.R.T. readings . .

The "168GB INTEL SSDSC2CW180A3 (SSD)" has been my main © drive since I installed it last August. [major boost in system performance; I considered the upgrade, 3 years after I bought this laptop, would keep me happy with it for another 3 years]

Re "Power-On Hours (POH): 000 (000)" - Speccy isn't showing (the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox utility does) the decimal form -898772- of its hexadecimal hours data "DB6D4". Actually it does show it, but in a different place -above the S.M.A.R.T. details it shows "Power On Time" as "37448.8 days", the result of dividing 898772 by 24. That's a crazy large number -reflects an issue in the S.M.A.R.T. implementation in the Intel SSD?

The "466GB NULL (SATA)" is the original (spinning) hard drive -it's installed in the laptop's 2nd drive bay (Windows shows it as my F drive). I don't know why Speccy -and Windows Device Manager- can't identify its manufacturer (Toshiba).

Re "only registers 56 hours usage" -I gather you're referring to the "055" number shown to the left of "Data 0000004655" [I can't figure out what Speccy intends with the numbers in that location (all rows)]; that hexadecimal # converts to 18005 decimal -matching the "750.2 days" Speccy shows above the S.M.A.R.T. details. That appears to be an accurate number of hours.

Re "Do you have an External Drive installed ? Just noted Drive d: (media backup) (Fixed) (Total:488.28 GB)" --I did have my external drive connected when I ran Speccy. Sorry -that added unnecessary complexity.

I did the Windows disk check and ran sfc /scannow yesterday (before I did the tests following your instructions). Both showed no issues with drive C.

[The Windows disk check displays its report for only a few seconds before booting (too short to read all of it -frustrating!). But a little later it displayed a summary statement saying the drive is "clean".]

I couldn't run Windows Repair last evening -the machine had shut down (after running fine most of the day).

But I was able to run it this morning.

Definitely brought positive changes -Windows Firewall is now running fine!

Another change:  my machine now shows up in the Windows Explorer Network list on my wife's laptop. It had mysteriously disappeared from that list a few weeks ago.

It's apparent my Windows installation was definitely in need of repair.

[While I do weekly backups (using Acronis), the backups I have would not have dated back to before the corruptions happened. I will do a full backup now.]

I'd identified only 2 obvious issues with this machine:  the spontaneous shutdowns and Windows Firewall not running. The 2nd one is now repaired.

The shutdowns were becoming severe enough to have me contemplating replacing this laptop (reluctantly -as per my note above, I'd expected it to serve for several more years). I'd be delighted if the Windows Repair has also repaired whatever was causing the shutdowns (time will tell).

I'm indebted to you for your assistance; I offer my sincere gratitude - thanks.

Power On Count: 450 times - Power On Time: 37448.4 days

As I noted: I often never trust Speccy with reports, but it gives us a good idea most times. It often reads in an odd fashion with SSD etc.

I know the post I left had a lot in it, but without internet, I just had what I had saved to my editor for checking.

Please keep us updated if you run the last stages, since the computer is now on the improve.

Now I can go back and recheck a few other readings -

Thanks -
