I'm getting the dreaded "blue screen of death" all the time - it happens randomly, but on the average like every half-hour or so. It happens whether I have too many tabs open in a browser, if I'm doing something with After Effects or simply just copying-and-pasting some text from a Word file into an SRT file.

I downloaded your MiniToolBox program a couple of times (I'll paste the results at the end of this post) and I copied all of the minidump files and put them in a zip that you can snag here:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/rhhddxe8m21g743/minidump.zip

I also took a snapshot of my system with speccy:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/8snNhnDYMZmEedXAVb18WHo

Anyway, here's the results from MiniToolBox, thanks in advance for any help / advice:

Hi

Welcome to the bleeping computers forum  :welcome:

You dumps shows varying stop codes and most of them blames genuine Windows system files as the cause of crash. Following are the repeating stop codes seen in your dumps.

CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION (109)

BAD_POOL_HEADER (19)

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (3b)

A step by step approach is required to find the real culprit . Follow the below steps.

1 ) Check the RAM for faults.

Chances of a faulty memory module is highly likely in your case. Since you have 4 modules, remove 3 of them and let the system run on only one module plugged. If you continue to receive blue screens, remove the currently plugged one and try another. Repeat it either until BSOD stops or all 4 modules are checked.

2 ) Remove Avast completely and use "Microsoft security Essentials"

Avast is known to cause crashes. Uninstall it from Control Panel-->Programs. After the uninstall finishes, boot the system in to safe mode and run the cleanup tool  to remove leftover drivers.

http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Download MSE from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/security-essentials-download . Update it and run a full scan. From a strict BSOD perspective, BC recommends MSE.

3 ) Update the system to latest service pack. It is mandatory for stability and security.

      http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/A/F/0AFB5316-3062-494A-AB78-7FB0D4461357/windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

Post the results after checking and we will proceed to the next step.

Hi Anshad,

Thank you for the quick reply and for helping me out here, I really appreciate it!

I ran the HP utility to check my ram and all 4 sticks passed, but I don't know how reliable this utility actually is. This isn't a screenshot of my actual PC, but the utility that I used on my machine looks identical to this (where all 4 sticks passed the check):

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf-JAVA/Doc/images/284/c02120759.jpg

From there, I successfully uninstalled Avast and then used the uninstall utility in safe mode to clean things up.

However, after I installed and updated Microsoft Security Essentials, I got the BSOD again before the scan could be completed. I tried to run the scan again in safe mode, but the same thing happened - the BSOD occurred before the scan could be completed.

Once the machine restarted, it asked me if I wanted to run the "startup repair", so I figured why not? It looks like this:

http://0.tqn.com/d/pcsupport/1/0/k/4/-/-/windows-7-startup-repair-9.jpg

After it completed, it didn't give me any sort of confirmation message, it just showed me the HP recovery manager:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf-JAVA/Doc/images/804/c01893408.gif

... and when I closed this recovery manager window, it just took me back to the windows login screen. The odd thing here is that once I logged back in, Micorsoft Security Essentials was gone from my machine. I just re-installed it and updated the definitions for it, and now it's performing a "full scan". I let it perform a "quick scan" first, and no problems were detected.

Anyway, I manually removed all of the ram (except for 1 stick), but the BSOD reared its ugly head once again. I'm currently on the second stick, but I have to wait until this "full scan" is completed before I can try the remaining 2 sticks, so this could take awhile...I'm assuming it will crash before the scan is completed, unless I get lucky here...

While I'm waiting, is there anything else that I should do or be aware of? One quick question though - if the BSOD still occurs after I have tried all the sticks, should I try different slots as well? I'm currently trying all of the sticks in the same slot.  What if the slot that I'm using to test them is bad - How would I even know?

Should I try all of the different sticks in each slot or something? The problem here is that it generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour before the BSOD occurs, so trying all of the different slot / stick combinations could be a timely process. I'm willing to do it though, if that's what needs to be done.

Sometimes I get lucky (how stupid does this sound?) and the BSOD occurs rather quickly while I'm performing certain tasks, but this appears to be a purely random occurrence - I never know if and when a given task will "trigger" the BSOD or not. The only constant seems to be time - the BSOD always occurs within 45 minutes to an hour, no matter what (even if I don't touch the computer).

I'll keep you posted with the results of the "full scan" (assuming it completes successfully) and I'll let you know what happens with the remaining 2 sticks of ram.

Thanks again Anshad!

Joey

HI

Only reliable way to test RAM is to physically swap them. I have seen several cases in which memory testing softwares passed the test but the RAM is actually faulty. Also as you doubted, a faulty memory slot can also produce blue screens. Although it happens rarely, trying another slot is a good idea.

Also make sure to install the Service Pack 1 before doing any other things. Easiest way to create BSOD is to stress the system by running resource consuming softwares like the video editing programs you are using.

I forgot to say one thing. After installing the SP1, clear the Minidump folder by moving all dmp files to another folder. Now on we need the new dumps which reflects new software changes.

Don't worry about the startup repair. System will show you a startup repair screen if the system failed to start or shutdown correctly. Since startup repair may automatically restore the system to a previous state, skip it next time  if you encounter it. Choose the Start Windows normally instead.

Hmmm...I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I was unable to install SP 1. When I tried, a little popup window appeared that simply said "The data is invalid" - I tried to run it as administrator too, but with the same result. Maybe it was the wrong link? I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Anyway, it seems that you may be correct regarding the possible ram issue. I'm still using the second stick because the full scan is still running and the BSOD hasn't appeared yet, which is awesome! However, this Windows Security Essentials thing is incredibly slow - it's been scanning for 5 hours and 28 min, and there's barely a dent in the progress bar. My second drive (internal WD) is 3TB, so maybe this is why - I don't know if it's planning to scan this drive too? The total or combined data on both drives is about 1 TB.

Whatever, I'm pretty happy that no stop errors have occurred yet!

As a result, I'm guessing that the first stick I tried is bad...? Either way, once I'm ready to move on to the remaining 2, I'm guessing that I should stick with the same mem slot that I'm currently using...?

What would cause the sticks to go bad in the first place? I bought all 4 of them at the same time, and I've only had them for about 6 months or so.

My machine started acting "funny" about a month or so ago. I would occasionally get an error message (dialogue box) that said something like Windows Explorer has crashed or something to that effect (and all my open windows would disappear), and then I would click the restart Windows Explorer button in the dialogue box, and everything would be fine for awhile. I'm still getting these errors (more frequently, like every other day), but now the BSOD occurs shortly thereafter. Most of the time, the BSOD occurs on it's own without this error showing up first.

Also, I occasionally get another type of error (popup) that says something like "An error occurred, windows will shut down in 1 minute" or something like that, and then the computer will shut down, just like the error message said it would, about 1 minute later.

I'm guessing all these errors are related in some fashion...?

Anyway, I'm going to go to bed and let this full scan run its course (fingers crossed) - I'll hit you back when I get up.

Thanks again!

Joey

Hi

AV software will analyse each single file to match the virus signatures stored in it's database. 1TB of data requires a lot of time for an Antivirus to analyse. So the delay is expected.

If the RAM sticks are only 6 months old, they maybe still under warranty. Continue checking each sticks separately by running heavy duty applications.

Other than memory issues, your system seems to have software problems as well. There are more than one way exist to install SP1. Please read the instructions from the below link for more info.

Hmmm...I guess you're right about the software problems. I tried to install SP1 twice, but both times I got the "Data is invalid" error message. Upon further investigation, Microsoft says that you can install SP1 via the Windows Update in the control panel, but it doesn't appear - the Microsoft website says that it may not appear if certain updates haven't been installed, so I've been installing update after update (hours and hours of this junk - I'm installing another 25 updates right now), but SP1 still hasn't shown up yet.

Should I just keep doing this, or should I just download the 1GB SP1 iso file? Wouldn't all of the necessary Win 7 updates / patches, etc. be included in this 1GB file? You would certainly think so...

Either way, I'm a little apprehensive about installing the SP1 update in the first place. From what I've read on the web, a lot of people have had problems with their machines after installing it - hopefully, all of the bugs have been worked out by now though.

Anyway, each time I try to install the different updates, I keep getting an error message saying "Some updates were not installed", and it's the same 3 updates: KB2296011, KB2621440, KB2545698

It also gives 2 error codes: Code 800B0100 and Code 8024200D

Hi

SP1 is a must for all WIn 7 machines. SP1 includes several security, reliability and performance enhancement hot fixes. The error code you received indicates there are some issues with the Windows update (probably corrupted system files ). Please try these steps.

1 ) Download and run System Update Readiness tool from the below link and run it.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

This tool will automatically trying to fix the errors which prevents update to failure.

2 ) Download and install the offline setup of the SP1

For safety, you can create a system backup image before installing SP1. If anything goes wrong, you can use the image to restore the system to the earlier working state.

THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DO BACK UP EVERYTHING IMPORTANT FIRST WHILE U CAN............ NEXT I WOULD USE IF YOU CAN SOMETHING YOU CAN HOOK YOUR HARD DRIVE UP EXTERNALLY TO ANOTHER COMPUTER.............. THEN I WOULD DO THE LONG FORMAT OF THE HARD DRIVE ............ THEN I WOULD RELOAD A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM AND DO ALL YOUR UPDATES AS WELL

Hi Anshad,

Thanks again for all your help!

I'm creating the system image (backup) now, and I'm also downloading the System Update Readiness tool, as well as downloading the 1.9GB SP1 (iso file) from Microsoft. This has already taken a couple of hours, so I'll resume everything in the morning...

@BIGDADDYCOOL68 - I'm backing up the HD that runs Win 7 on my machine onto an additional internal HD in the same machine, so this should suffice, no?

Hi

Formatting is the last step to proceed when every thing other fails. Yes, if our repair attempts fails, we may choose to re-install the OS but we are not going to give up that easily. Are we ?

There is no right way or wrong way. Reinstalling the operating system does sometimes solve whatever issues one is having.
However, it will not work if ram is faulty or if hardware may be failing. Reinstalling Windows does not guarantee problem resolution.

BUT FORMATTING THE HARD DRIVES HELPS ALOT MORE
