Greetings to all, especially whomever can help.

This pc is one of two, both belonging to a small family business. There is also a Dell PowerEdge T110 server (Win 2008 R2) and all three machines are networked together as well as the 'net.
The two pc's are running  Win 7 Pro SP1. All of these are about 2 years old. As this a business machine, there may be times when requested actions will have to wait until "business" is cleared out of the way. Most of the time, it is playing games though so....

The pc in question is running very high CPU usage, often 100% for minutes at a time. Also, there are browser redirects (Firefox).
These redirects only seemed to occur during a Google search and then when a result is opened in a new tab it is redirected. Close that result tab and open in new tab again, it would land on the appropriate site. I've not investigated further along that line.

There are the occasional pop-up ads but, not being the regular user on here, I've no idea how often they occur although the few I've seen appear to have no correlation with the site visited. (Netflix pop-up appearing on a site for dolls, for example.)

There have also been backgrounds sounds, like audio from ads, although no ad would appear and the audio was usually broken. Even when no browser was running or open, including when the PC was first turned on for the day.

I threw Malewarebytes, AdwCleaner and JRT at the problem, which seemed to have cleared up the redirect problem but the CPU high usage issue and ad sounds are still present. The CPU usage is not consistent over time or with application, browser or web site usage.

As I've mentioned, I'm not the regular user on this PC (where I'm typing at the moment) but am the family IT go-to-guy. So, responses may be a bit tardy and be relayed by me, over the phone to the regular user. I know, painful, at your end and mine. I've included my own e-mail address for replies though, so that should speed things up a little bit at least and I can monitor replies from my home (not here). Well, we can monkey wrench this anyway.

I've reached the end of my knowledge and experience with this, so any assistance would be SO welcome!

Note: I opened an account here a couple years ago for another issue entirely. I'm using the same account for this new issue on an entirely different PC.
Not sure if this should be posted here or in the "Am I infected" forum, so please re-direct as needed.
And yes, I can get long-winded at times.

DDS took a long time to run (about 10 minutes) but I noted that the CPU usage was peaked at 100% during that time as well.

"DDS.txt" below, "Attach.txt" attached.

Regards, Rip_Rap (Or Ray, either way.)

Hello Ripcord52

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

These are the programs I would like you to run next, if you have any problems with one of these just skip it and move on to the next one.

-AdwCleaner-

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Confirm each time with Ok.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
-Junkware-Removal-Tool-

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
When they are complete let me have the two reports and let me know how things are running.

Thank you for taking this case, Gringo.

AdwCleaner and JRT will be run and results posted asap. (Hopefully tomorrow. Sorry but I'm working partially by remote control here.)

Does AVG need to be suspended before running either of those?

Okay, ran down here on a rainy day, as the normal user is home sick.
I've not seen any e-mail notices and my address is correct in my profile. Maybe I missed a check box somewhere?

Ran both AdwCleaner and JRT, logs listed below.

2 odd things happened.

(1) I had suspended AVG until next boot, yet when AdwCleaner started to run, AVG still asked me to allow it to do so. Once I allowed, things progressed normally with AdwCleaner.

(2) JRT, while running in the CMD box, showed 5 instances of "access denied". These occured one after the other, either while scanning the Registry or between that and the next area it checked.

Other then (2) I don't see anything in either log as suspicious, but I'm not the pro here, am I?

Not seeing any redirects thus far but CPU usage is still maxing out often and for minutes at a time, even when nothing is running, such as after a fresh boot.
I've not heard any 'ghostly' in the background yet, but I've not been on here for more than an hour today.
Here are the logs from AdwCleaner and JRT.

Hello Ripcord52

I Would like you to do the following.

Please print out or make a copy in notepad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
  • Log from Combofix
  • let me know of any problems you may have had
  • How is the computer doing now?

ComboFix ran but not smoothly. Log pasted at bottom.

I disabled AVG (2013 pro trial) for 15 minutes, using the instructions for AVG 12. I was unable to locate similar instructions for this version but figured it would do as needed.
During first attempt to run ComboFix a FAX tried to call in (FaxTalk FaxCenter) but eventually went away on its own. This happens at times, a call comes in but doesn't connect, often due to it being a spam call.
I waited about 10 minutes but ComboFix did not appear to finish installing itself. What I think of as the installation screen (green text) disappeared but nothing else happened for another 10 minutes. Not finding it in Task Manager, I ran it again from the desktop icon (not a shortcut).

During the 2d run an error window appeared "Error opening file for writing. C:\32788R22FWJFW\pev.3XE"
I chose "Retry" and got the same message, so then I chose "Ignore" and things proceeded.

While the 2d run was working on deleteing files, AVG popped up for "C:\ComboFix\Regt.3XE", which I allowed.

(I would suggest that future suspensions of AVG should be set to 'Until Reboot' instead of 15 mintues.)

Things seem to continue okay until "Preparing Log Report", which took at least 20 minutes.
Against the rules, I tried to bring up Task Manager to view the CPU usage and to see if ComboFix was still running or not.
On the first few attempts to open Task Manager, it would open okay but disappear after a couple of seconds.
A few minutes later, it stayed open and I was able to look around a bit. CPU usage was bouncing between ~60% - 90% and ComboFix was listed as still running.
Eventually it did finish, the report opened and now...here we are.

Speaking with the regular user of this PC, I learned that a few weeks ago (when most of these problems seem to have started) there were times when this PC would shut down for now apparent reason.
She would attempt to restart it but the machine ignored all attempts. The only 'cure' was to wait 20 minutes or longer, then attempt to reset the PC from the tower button.

Please bear in mind that as this is a business machine and the only one that recieves FAX's (an important element to the company), although I can shut it down as needed, I'll have to wedge it in between 'critical' time periods.
That shouldn't be a big deal but, well...we'll see.

I've not rebooted since ComboFix finished. Over the last 5 minutes or so, the CPU usage as been bouncing between 30% - 80%. No browsers open, no applications running on the desktop and nothing in the task tray under Hidden Icons, although normally there would be AVG and about 5 other things in there.
I will be rebooting once I've posted this, so all the background tasks can resume, including the FAX.

Just noted: CPU at 100% for the last ~2 minutes, with a couple short drops to ~50%.

Just tried to log into here (BleepingComputer), clicking the 'log in' button produced a pop-up for logging in but on top of that was a Cannon pop-up and it would not go away (no 'close' option on it.)
Clicking it did open a new tab, at Amazon for Cannon products but the pop-up remained on the BleepingComputer page.

I shut down Firefox, reopened it it and this time the log-in was NOT a pop-up. And now I'm here posting all this.

ComboFix log follows:

Since the above report ( a few minutes ago) I have re-booted this PC. CPU usage is still hitting 100% often.

Also, I've just noted an icon on the desktop (not a shortcut) for installing an Ask Toolbar. No one here knows how it go there, of course.

Looking at the properties of it I find "FFDNAToolbarInstaller_DNA_tbr_sa_1.9.1.0" version 0.0.0.0.

Normally I would simply delete it from the desktop and then from the recycle bin. I shall wait though until you say so or otherwise.

I had not noticed during previous log-ins to BleepingComputer, weather the log-in screen was a pop-up or not. This time I had no difficulty and did notice the log in was a page, not a pop-up. Makes me wonder about the previous incedent, mentioned in my last posting.

I seem to have stepped into a deep one here...

Oh, and I am now getting the e-mail notifications concerning this topic, thankfully.

Hello Ripcord52

I would like you to try and run these next.

TDSSKiller

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • more than one report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". The one that I need is the larger one. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Note** this report can be very long - so if the website gives you an error saying it is to long you may attache it

If the forum still complains about it being to long send me everything that is at the end of the report after where it says

    ==================
    Scan finished
    ==================
and I will see if I want to see the whole report

--RogueKiller--

Download & SAVE to your Desktop RogueKiller for 32bit or Roguekiller for 64bit
  • Quit all programs that you may have started.
  • Please disconnect any external drives from the computer before you run this scan!
  • For Vista or Windows 7, right-click and select "Run as Administrator to start"
  • For Windows XP, double-click to start.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Then Click on "Scan" button
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Scan Finished"
  • click on "delete"
  • Wait until the Status box shows "Deleting Finished"
  • Click on "Report" and copy/paste the content of the Notepad into your next reply.
  • the scan will make two reports the one I would like to see is called RKreport[2].txt on your Desktop
  • Exit/Close RogueKiller+
send me the reports made from TDSSKiller and Roguekiller and also let me know how the computer is doing at this time.

Hello Gringo. Hopefully your weekend is going well. I should be able to run your latest instructions tomorrow, Sunday, June 8.

Guestion though: Should I re-boot between then running of TDSSKiller and RogueKiller?

Side question: I'm logged in from yet another PC due to my PC apparently blocking the log in attempt, although I can fill in the log-in, the web site simply refreshes and I am still not logged in. Although I do have various blockers, such as No-Script, etc., I have them all either off or 'allowed' for this site. I was able to log in from my PC a couple days ago, so not sure what may have changed. Is it possible something here at BleepingComputer was temporarily different?

Never mind about my side question, I figured out the problem and can log in once again, from my own PC.

"Ships passing in the night..."

Indeed, it was a cookie problem. Not sure how BleepingComputer got block-listed but it was. Obviously my doing, as no one else uses this PC. (MINE!)

TDSSKiller just finished and, thus far, CPU usage appears to be back to normal. (Rootkit removed)

I'm getting set to d/l and run RogueKiller but wanted to give a quick head-ups on progress thus far.

Note that TDSSKiller went through its routine okay but on rebooting it again came up. I checked all options again and let it run again. Nothing found.

I had, just before that second run, copied the original log over to the desktop, in case it got overwritten by the second run.

Rebooted, all appears to be back to normal (after a few minutes observation and not going on-line or running anything other than Task Manager).

Here is the short version of the results from the first run.

12:16:44.0175 6072  Scan finished
12:16:44.0175 6072  ============================================================
12:16:44.0188 6064  Detected object count: 1
12:16:44.0188 6064  Actual detected object count: 1
12:18:26.0084 6064  \Device\Harddisk0\DR0\# - copied to quarantine
12:18:26.0093 6064  \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 - copied to quarantine
12:18:26.0298 6064  \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( Rootkit.Boot.Harbinger.a ) - will be cured on reboot
12:18:26.0321 6064  \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 - ok
12:18:26.0341 6064  \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( Rootkit.Boot.Harbinger.a ) - User select action: Cure
