I was reading an article in the forum here, but I did not want to hitchhike on the post as it was older and probably rude, so here I am starting over. I own an Acer 8943g that is approximately 2 yrs old. I reformatted about 6 months ago and everything has been good except for the last week or so I have been having my machine freeze up to the point where absolutely nothing will move. No cursor, buttons, keys, nothing! I t was coming back from the freezing after about 3-4 minutes, but for the last couple of days it just stays frozen till I reboot via the power button. There is nothing in the Event Viewer to indicate a problem, no warnings no errors. I am at a loss as to where I should go from here. I do use Acronis, but I would like to take a shot at fixing this before I go backwards. Any help? I am going to scan with Kaspersky first, bu from ther what is there to do?

Why did you reformat?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Why did you reformat?

I can't remember the exact reason, but at the time I knew it was not repairable through normal, so instead of using one of the Acronis backups that I had I just reformatted. It was that time anyway.

We should run a full surface scan on the HDD surface first. To do that follow the instructions below.

1 ) Your HDD is a Samsung one which is currently owned and supported by Seagate. Download Seagate seatool for DOS from http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Burn the ISO to a blank CD using imgburn , ISORecorder or any other image burning app. Refer this link if you never burned an ISO before - http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201431en

2 ) Boot from the CD and run a Long Test with Seatool. Report the message displayed by Seatool in next reply.

It said LongTest Passed in the log results. I tried to copy the log, but they don't give you much of a log that I could see. It said LongTest passed in the log box

I even ran a test on the hard drive with the SeaTools program I had that gives you a few hard drive tests both short and long so I ran the short one and this was the result

Hi

That is good news. Controller error can also happen due to faulty interface driver and connectivity issues. Please follow the below steps and check if it makes any difference.

1 ) Remove and reconnect the hard drive. This will solve any potential loose connection issues. HDD can be accessed easily by removing a small cover in the bottom of the laptop.

2 ) Open Control Panel-->Programs and uninstall Intel chipset and SATA AHCI drivers. Now download and install the latest versions from Intel site (one from Acer site is outdated ).

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/infinst_autol.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=20775&ProductID=816&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/22676/a08/SetupRST.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=22676&ProductID=2101&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%C2%AE+RST)

3 ) If there is no difference, perform a clean boot and check how system works.

To perform a clean boot -

A ) Uninstall Kaspersky temporarily. While uninstalling choose to keep the activation data. We can re install it later after finished checking.

B ) Open run dialog (Win key + R ) and enter Msconfig in it to open System Configuration utility.

C ) In the General tab, select (dot) Selective Startup, and uncheck the Load Startup Items box

           168628d1312527451t-troubleshoot-applicat

D ) Click on the Services tab, check the Hide all Microsoft services box, click on the Disable all button, and click on OK.

          168629d1312527451t-troubleshoot-applicat

E ) When prompted, click on the Restart button

Report how the system works after this steps.

I did as you asked. The drivers were updated though I need to ask you a question. You said to uninstall the drivers first. Sometimes when I uninstall a driver it almost beats me to installing a replacement driver. Why can't I just install a driver from the site as an update and then reboot? Doesn't it work that way? Installing over top of the old driver. Sometimes I am not sure of which driver you are talking about. The one driver SATA AHCI driver I can tell, but the chipset driver in device manager there are like 6 different drivers with the word chipset in it so I am not exactly sure which ones to uninstall so I just ran the update from what you gave me. At the Intel site I downloaded the update utility from Intel and it said there were 4 chipset drivers that were good. As for seeing how this runs I need to give it a day so I can see if it freezes on me again. This problem was happening once a day so it is hard to nail it right down. Also I still this machine under warranty till November of this year if I need to replace the hard drive. Should I wait till tomorrow or till it freezes again to respond?I am adding a Snip/Screenshot of the update utility response for these chipsets. You tell me if they are good? You see the other things that are on that like the graphics, audio, adapters, wired and wireless? What does Intel have to do with them? Those are from other companies, like Realtek, Qualcom, not Intel.

Can I also direct your attention to the errors found below the hard disk errors on the Mini Tool Box report log. There are Outlook errors and code integrity errors on something else. Could any of those bear any responsibility for what's happening? I'm just asking so I can make sure that we have touched all bases. When I saw those errors I thought about those before I thought about the others. Let me know what you think about it all. Tell me what a "Clean Boot" will accomplish and is it possible to run it for a full day, because as I told you before it is only intermittent freezing which makes it that much harder to put your finger down on a time when things will go bad.

Hi

It is not easy to say whether your issue is software related or a hardware issue. Those software errors you saw in the event log are not important but the HDD related ones are critical. Like i said before a faulty SATA interface driver can produce those errors. That is why we are trying to update it.

To update the SATA driver, Go to Control panel-->Programs and uninstall the Intel chipset driver first. Don't uninstall the driver from device manager. When you restart, Windows will automatically install a driver from it's driver store. It is expected. After that install the 2 drivers from the links in my previous post. Those are the latest one available. Don't be confused by using Intel driver update tool. That will list all drivers including the old ones which contains your chipset hardware ID.

Most of the crashes and freezes are generally caused by third party drivers and services. Clean boot is a procedure used to eliminate all third party services to check if one of them is causing the crash. If Windows works fine in clean boot state, a third party service will be the reason behind the crash.

 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If the issue is caused by hardware, you can submit it for warrant claim. There is no quick way to determine if the issue is hardware related or not. If you wish, you can perform a factory OS restore which will eliminate all chances for a software fault. If the system still freezes even after performing a recovery, you should submit the laptop for warranty.

Anshad, you say to uninstall the Intel Chipset from what I assume you are trying to tell me is Programs and Features. I am sending you a Snip/Screenshot of everything Intel in Programs and features. I also went to Device Mgr. and did the same thing so you can tell me which ones need to go because the only Chipsets I can see are in Device Manager. Those 2 links you sent me yesterday, one was for Rapid Storage. Is that important to my laptop? I didn't see that as being necessary so I uninstalled it right after. It also runs in start-up. If you think it's needed I will re-install it, however you need to be specific about what to un-install and install and whether I need to run this from start-up. I just made a screenshot of the SATA AHCI entry in Device Manager and you should tell me if that is also the one you want me to un-install and either give me the new one or a link to a newer one, or will that one also install a newer one on reboot or will it just install the same one that I just un-installed? I know you said go to Programs, but as I showed you in the screenshot there are no Chipsets or SATA AHCI drivers in programs and Features. Please guide me once again my friend.

Hi

According to the snapshots you posted, there are no Intel Chipset drivers currently installed in your system. Basically your system uses stock Intel drivers which are available in the driver store of Windows. Just installing the new drivers will updates and overwrite the current ones.

IRST is not necessary, you can skip it if you wish. If you continue to receive the freezes, i recommend a factory restore to confirm whether the issue is hardware related or OS related. Passing in software based diagnostics doesn't mean the hard disk is 100% OK. Based on the event log, the culprit should be either the SATA driver or the hard disk.

How can I update the generic chipset drivers and where in the heck do you find the Windows store for generic drivers. I wouldn't know which ones to get if they're generic. I'm sure they are not going to go by my laptop name to find a driver for me, so I would guess I would have to put in the hard disk model number and ask for chipset drivers. Were none of the ones that I showed you in the list of Device Mgr. proper for my machine. I guess what I am trying to say is were any of those in the list the actual chipset for this laptop or were they all just different pieces of hardware?
