Hiya,

I have already posted my problem but think I did it in the wrong place and have been advised to post it here.  It may be easier if you look at the link below as this as all the information I have tried up to now

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-hardware/i-cant-get-system-properties-by-any-method/a46b276e-49de-46ab-a3a7-db98f2da202c

above is thread for reference to my problem, have run MBAM, SAS, and my current antivirus, all run clean, was referred to this forum, for the possibility of a deeply embedded infection.

As you can see in the thread, have tried every possible solution to restore system properties, this is my last resort before reinstalling the os.

I am attaching a copy of the DDS.txt  reports

Thank You.

Phil

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===
Search and delete the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete tab follow the prompts.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Some Rookit infection may damage your boot sector. The Windows Recovery Console may be needed to restore it. Do not bypass this installation. You may regret it.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
RcAuto1.gif
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
whatnext.png
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protection programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause of infiltration an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Please paste the logs in your next reply, DO NOT ATTACH THEM
Let me know what problem persists.

p.s. I'm listing this as a reference we should look at it later when the above instructions have been completed.
Let me know how ever is this seems to be you problem.

This is only for windows XP. If it looks like your current problem then you can download and run the .vbs file suggested.

No 397 Restore missing tabs to the Display properties dialog
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tips3.htm

Before you execute the .vbs file I suggest you create a System Restore point.
If something goes wrong you will be able to restore you system to the current date.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

How to disable Java in your browsers
http://www.infoworld.com/t/web-browsers/how-disable-java-in-your-browsers-210882

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Old versions....

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
http://www.benedelman.org/images/iac-jan13/ask-iac-011613-small.png
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.

Quoted from my previous log.

p.s. I'm listing this as a reference we should look at it later when the above instructions have been completed.
Let me know how ever is this seems to be you problem.

Is this you problem with the Properties function?

Let me know of any other issues with this computer.

Hiya Nasdaq,
I only have installed Firefox and Explorer.  Java was already turned off in Firefox, turned off the following that had Java attached in Explorer.
Name          SSVHelper Class
Publisher     Oracle America, Inc.
Status        Disabled
File date     26 February 2013, 15:34
Version       7.0.150.3
Load time     (0.01 s)

Name          Java™ Plug-In 2 SSV Helper
Publisher     Oracle America, Inc.
Status        Disabled
File date     26 February 2013, 15:34
Version       7.0.150.3
Load time     (0.08 s)

Name          Sun Java Console
Publisher     Oracle America, Inc.
Status        Disabled
File date     26 February 2013, 15:34
Version       7.0.150.3

When I check for the version of Java I get the following message in Explorer.
Verifying Installation Detecting Java on your computer

A security prompt may appear. Click Run to allow the verification process to continue.
Depending on your system settings, you may need to respond to prompts to allow the verification to continue.

If you have installed Java and there is an error with the verification, there could be a configuration issue (eg. browser, Java control panel, security settings).

I get a similar message in Firefox
Verify Java Version

We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser.

If you have installed Java and there is an error with the verification, there could be a configuration issue (eg. browser, Java control panel, security settings).

» See the troubleshooting FAQ
» Try to verify Java again

No 397 Restore missing tabs to the Display properties dialog. I dont think this is what is wrong, basically if I right click on my computer and go to properties nothing happens.  Its the same outcome for any other method that as been suggested in the Microsoft community website.  Also I have tried clicking on the settings tab in system restore and this too does not do anything.  The reason this came about was the computer was running slow and when I tried to do a system restore, to see if this would help, after the reboot it said that it "had not restored" or words to that effect.
Regards
Phil

Your Java is disable. You may have to enable it to get the update.

It's working fine in my Windows 7 but unfortunately I do not have a XP machine to test it.

You may be able to find the solution in this Windows XP forum

Hiya Nasdaq,

Getting a bit confused here, thought I was meant to disable Java as that was one of the options given in the readouts.  I just had a look in the link you added and I am afraid I would not even begin to know where to look to see if my problem is one of those listed.

Regards

Phil

Leave Java disable.

Start a new topic in the XP forum. It's your best bet.

Hiya Nasdaq,

Below is the link that explains my problem and why I was referred to Bleeping computer as a last resort before a clean install.  If you could can you take a quick look, before I move on to the xp section, you have suggested to post the tread on.  I say this because I am unsure if you are saying that there are no issues other than updating Java.  I have disabled them in the two browsers but in add and remove programs there is a program called "Java 7 update 15" installed shall I uninstall this?  Thank you for you time and please bear with me as I am not over familiar with the workings of computers.

Regards

Phil

above is thread for reference to my problem, have run MBAM, SAS, and my current antivirus, all run clean, was referred to this forum, for the possibility of a deeply embedded infection.

As you can see in the thread, have tried every possible solution to restore system properties, this is my last resort before reinstalling the os. Thank You.

I may have found a registry setting that removes MyComputer properties.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

If your operating system is 64 bit download this tool:
SystemLook_x64.exe
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following bold text into the main textfield:
    :regfind
    NoPropertiesMyComputer
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

If found and if set to 1 then we should be in business.
