Having a huge amount of trouble with this issue... and it's very difficult to diagnose. I think it's been ongoing for about two months now, as its intermittent nature has caused me to put off fixing it in the hope that it would go away. It didn't go away.

I'll do my best to explain the scenario, and current things I've tried as fixes.

The problem

My Win 64 system completely hard crashes for an unknown reason. It mostly seems to happen when I'm on a YouTube page, or watching a video of some kind, but it doesn't appear to be easily replicated. Also it doesn't always happen on videos. When I say it hard crashes, it totally freezes up - everything stops, the keyboard is unresponsive (pressing Caps Lock does nothing), and the only way to get out is to hold the power button for 5 seconds to hard shutdown.

Things I've already tried

I checked out the Event Viewer, but there doesn't seem to be any useful information there that suggests the process causing this failure. Initially I thought it was Microsoft Security Essentials (which I'll get to later), due to an ODBE error, but it doesn't look like this is the case any more. Nothing gives an indication for why it crashes, I just have errors saying the computer was unexpectedly rebooted etc.

I'll try to list the things I've tried and in roughly the order I've tried them to date...

  • Uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
  • Removed most (if not all) references to MSE on my computer, including registry keys
  • Updated / downgraded all Flash plugins / programs
  • Tried enabling / disabling hardware acceleration on Firefox
  • Tried enabling / disabling hardware acceleration on Flash settings
  • Fresh install of Firefox
  • Fresh install of Flash
  • Performed full virus and malware scan
  • Performed full update of drivers
  • Performed full system cleanup of registry keys and general files (CCleaner or equivalent)
  • Performed Memcheck scan on primary disk
  • Removed any unnecessary programs that may have clashed
  • Upgraded / downgraded graphics card drivers
  • Performed full error check on primary disk
  • Performed defrag on primary disk

I may have attempted other fixes so far, but this is all I can remember doing at this point. The entire thing is driving me nuts, because it appears so difficult to pinpoint where the problem lies.

Info about my system

I noticed in another thread that they suggested running diagnostic stuff, so I figured it'd be a helpful start to list the specs of my system. See below for Minitoolbox scan and a Speccy Snapshot.

I'd hugely HUGELY appreciate the help to fix this issue. My computer has become nigh on unusable for anything, because it has turned every session into a festival of frustration. At least if it was consistent in some way (i.e. if it crashed every time I opened YouTube) it would be ok, because I'd know to stay off there. But it just happens whenever it decides to happen.

If you can suggest anything to try that I've not already listed above, I'd be very grateful if you took a moment to reply. Thanks in advance.

Hi  RoThiSePh

Im not to familiar with minitoolbox but I noticed this

Ad-Aware Antivirus (Version: 10.5.2.4379)
Ad-Aware Browsing Protection (Version: 1.0.1.94)

ZoneAlarm Firewall (Version: 10.1.101.000)
ZoneAlarm Free (Version: 10.1.101.000)
ZoneAlarm LTD Toolbar
ZoneAlarm Security (Version: 10.1.101.000)

"unable to verify the image integrity of the file \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Program Files\CheckPoint\ZAForceField\Plugins\ISWSHEX.dll"

It looks like you have 3 antivirus programs installed including MSE, with ZoneAlarm causing some errors.

AV programs can conflict with each other even during installation, I would try removing all those antivirus programs including Microsoft Security Essentials and install a new copy.

After you have uninstalled all that ZoneAlarm stuff you can run this removal tool to make sure its completely gone.

Thanks for your reply NoHz, good to have this insight. I'll do a full uninstall of each AV program when I get home from work. I did fully remove MSE in the past, and I then installed and uninstalled AVG, so something tells me it isn't these that are the issue.

Now that you mention this DLL error, it does seem feasible that the problem could lie with ZoneAlarm. All throughout the process, I've not made any adjustments to ZA either by disabling or removing it. I'll give it a good uninstalling later, and hopefully that will do the trick.

I'll report back with results within the next few days, to determine whether the issue is persisting or if it appears to have been resolved.

<<Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.>>

You also seem to have a damaged profile...which may be an indication of hard drive problems.  I suggest running the appropriate long/extended diagnostic on the Windows partition/drive.

Hey Louis, thanks for your response.

Any suggestions for a diagnostic tool to use for this? Do you mean a memory check, or are there specific things out there to scan what you think could be up? I don't really know what exactly you're suggesting, so a little steer would be helpful! :)

Some useful info:  Fix a corrupted user profile, Win 7 - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/fix-a-corrupted-user-profile  AND  Windows cannot load your profile because it may be corrupted - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/corruptprofile.htm .

Profiles become damaged routinely, just as files become damaged.  The key is to try to correct the situation before something drastic (like inability to logon) occurs.

Tried some various suggestions as posed by the folks here, thanks for the guidance! In the end I uninstalled ZoneAlarm I think that could have been the issue... but after all that, there were still other problems on the computer (flickering, dodgy Flash etc) so I just backed my stuff up and went for the full Windows reinstall.

Pleased with the results, everything is clean and new and I've almost reinstalled all programs. Thanks for the advice guys, appreciated! :tophat:

I don't believe this. Within 10 minutes of posting this, it hard crashed on me! I'd barely installed anything, but I know that it was running fine before I did my Windows updates and things. Honestly, hardly anything has been installed so far - Flash, MSE, Firefox, a few drivers.. and a bunch of Windows updates.

So I google for Windows updates hard crashing, and find this article: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/2013/04/12/ms-patch-crash/1

I look around my updates for the supposedly fixed update (I don't think it has been fixed, because this description seems bang on) and lo and behold, I find this page outlining one of the security updates in my list of updates: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:idJsfoPgru8J:technet.microsoft.com/security/bulletin/ms13-036+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-a

Edit: the specific update I found in my list wasn't labelled as in the description on that page. It's the KB update of the number under Known Issues (i.e. 2840149)

I have uninstalled this update. I hope that this has fixed the issue. I can think of nothing else this can be. I've checked it isn't the memory, and I totally formatted both hard disks. They should be totally fine. I'm putting all my faith in the fact Windows Update has screwed me on this one...

I'll post back in a week or so if I'm able to confirm whether or not it was this update. Argh!

Sounds like a pain, are you still having problems? I did a little research and found your GeForce GTX 560 Ti is known to cause some of the issues your experiencing. There seems to be alot problems with the drivers they released.

I read the 285, 295, 296 series drivers were unstable, Try installing the latest version (310.xx) and working backwards until you find one that works. It may also help to check your cooling fans for dust build up. If that doesn't work all hope is not lost, you can still try troubleshooting some known hardware problems with your graphics card.

Hope this helps.

Well...there's a flaw in your thinking...formatting a hard drive is only so effective with minor problems (small number of bad sectors)...but it is of no value if the drive has problems which are more serious.

I will move this to Internal Hardware, where someone more knowledgeable can take a look at your SMART data for your drives.
