First off, there may be more issues with my computer that have caused this main issue, but I'm unable to figure those out.  Or perhaps this issue is caused by the same things my other issues are about.  :)  Nonetheless, I really need help with this one... and then we can move on to others that I'm running into.

Main Issue:   Internet Explorer Update will never install and update.  It constantly shows up in my list of Windows Critical Updates.

My current IE version is version 8.   I'm trying to update to version 9 via the Windows Update feature.  I also tried to download version 9 directly from the Microsoft website, installed it, and it said that it was a success when I installed.  But then I open IE, and it's still version 8.   And the Windows Update still says I need to update it.  It's a continuous cycle.

I have ran Malwarebytes, AdAware, and my Avast virus scans to ensure that things are "clean".   I did this in Safe Mode.   I did this because my computer was running very slow and I was getting random dll error messages upon startup.  I thought it may have something to do with this IE issue.

Please help.  :)

Thanks!

p22002970.gif Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
  • Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

NOTE 1. If one of your security applications (e.g., third-party firewall) requests permission to allow DIG.EXE access the Internet, allow it to do so.
NOTE 2 SecurityCheck may produce some false warning(s), so leave the results reading to me.

p22002970.gif Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
    • Other Services
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices (do NOT change any settings here)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click Go and post the result.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.

Hi,

First...  I tried to run RKill and it didn't work.  I downloaded and tried to run both of the exe files that you sent (rkill and iexplore).  Yes, I tried to run them as administrator.  I got a message stating:  There was a problem retrieving the necessary environment variable appdata.  Rkill has Terminated!

p22002970.gif Please disable "word wrap" in Notepad because your logs are hard to read.

p22002970.gif You're running two AV programs, Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus and Avast.

You must uninstall one of them.

I suggest Lavasoft goes.

p22002970.gif Your "hosts" file has been hijacked.

Restart computer in Safe Mode.
Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to Show hidden files, and folders, UN-check Hide protected operating system files.
NOTE. Make sure to reverse the above changes, when done with this step.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder.
Delete hosts file.
NOTE. If you can't delete "hosts" file (access denied) take ownership of "ETC" folder first and then try again: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Restart in normal mode.
Please, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034#FixItForMeAlways and click on "Fix it" button to reset your "hosts" file.
Follow all prompts.

Re-run MiniToolbox.

Checkmark following boxes:

  • List content of Hosts

Click Go and post the result.

HI,

Sorry about the word wrap.  I forgot that was turned On.  I have just turned it OFF.  Do you want me to repost those old logs?

I uninstalled Lavasoft AV.  I deleted the hosts file and ran Microsoft Fix It.  Re-ran MiniToolBox and here is my result:

Ok - here's everything from these scans...   For some reason ESET Scan found threats in some "legal documents" that I use on some of my websites that I own.  These legal documents are "locked" so that people can't just copy/paste from online.  Or download the file and edit.  I'm not sure why they are deemed a threat, as far as I know they aren't.  I can send you the files in a private message if you can take a look.  Thanks!

Any scanner can make some mistakes so if you're sure those are safe files keep them.

How is computer doing now?

Update Adobe Reader

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions (if present).
Note. If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, make sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Thanks!

I just uninstalled Adobe and installed Foxit instead.  It's definitely much lighter.

My computer seems to be running a bit better now.  However, I'm still getting a couple issues that won't go away, and have been here since we started.

1.  This error still appears 100% of the time that I restart my computer.

Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working

2.  I consistently have 7 new updates to install with Windows Update.   The main one being Internet Explorer 9.  I just never installs, and always fails.  I'm attaching a screenshot of my Windows Update screen.  No matter if I install them, restart, etc... or Not... it remains like this after restart.

I ran CheckDisk  (phew... that took a while.  :)

Computer loaded Windows, and the same error message appeared.  Then, I tried to run the updates again... still 7 remain after install.

So basically no change yet.

thanks

Try to install those updates one by one and see what's left.

Hi,

I just tried that.  It doesn't work.  I install them one by one, and I got through about 4 of them (it said they were successfully installed), and then when I went back to the Updates list, a few of the ones I just installed re-appeared on the list.   So then I went ahead and tried to install them based off of their dates (oldest to newest).   I got through about 4-5 updates.  Then they slowly started appearing back in the list again.  So I didn't do anything for about 10 mins.  Then I refreshed the updates list to see what updates would show up.  All 7 of them were back again (just like my screenshot from last post).

thoughts?
