Hi!

First of all thanks for the help! On the evening of Friday May 24 2013 my computer started to act a little weird. I was gaming and turning everything off for the night but when I tried to close some windows I had open that they weren't responding. Some things I had open were Google Chrome, Steam, and some some folders in my C: drive. I could navigate and look through webpages fine on Chrome and Steam could load up games and I could chat and such but I could NOT close the windows. I couldn't minimize, maximize or exit out of any window I had open. I then noticed that the taskbar was not responding either. The weird things is that usually when this happens is that it's only for a second or two with a (Not Responding) at the top of the window and then everything would work fine. This time it didn't work that way. I opened task manager and closed all windows through there. I also ended explorer.exe and started it up again. Everything seemed to work well and then I went to bed. I woke up the next day to boot up my computer and a little while after use the same thing started happening. I researched some things to try and I caved and backed up all my things and made my computer go through process of going back to it's factory defaults. When it ended all was well and I started to re-install some programs. Then it started again. At this point I have no idea what could be causing this seeing as I used the minimal knowledge to attempt to fix it. I'm hoping maybe some of you could help me fix my problem. I can provide system specs or anything you guys might need to help me!

Please and thank you!

-Victor

I would run the long/extended test from SeaTools For DOS hard drive diagnostic.

SeaTools for DOS Seagate and Samsung Drives - http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatooldreg&vgnextoid=480bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Alright will do. What should I do when the test is finished? Should I report back with the results or see if things are back to normal?

Thanks again!

Victor

Edit: I had a longer version of this but I somehow pressed backspace and it sent me back a page. Anyways I ran short test worked, no errors. tried to run long test program froze up and I had to reset my pc. When it showed my desktop everything seemed normal and is working fine. I'm assuming now that the problem is not software but hardware now?

Please run the long test, it's a much better indicator than the short test (I don't even know why a short test is included in these diagnosttics).

I have no clues as to what the problem is...that's why we are running the long diagnostic :), to get something to work with.

Okay so I tried running the long diagnostic and just leaving my pc sit until it was finished. I had to attempt multiple times because when I would come back at times there were little chunks of green text with a black background at the top of the screen. I also noticed that the blue ball stopped spinning and attempted to leave it like this for awhile but it would still be there when I came back. The latest test lasted until 92% before this happened.

Sorry for the late response

Victor

I would also recommend doing a SFC /Scannow test in an evaluated command prompt do the following

go to Start> Type CMD> Right click on CMD and Choose Run As Administrator

You will then be presented with a command line Interface box awaiting a command type the following without quotes

“sfc /scannow”

And let us know the end results the log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Kind Regards

If you cannot complete the hard drive diagnostic...I'd say that the hard drive is the problem and running sfc /scannow (which is a tool for repairing Windows system files) is not going to ameliorate the situation at all...since the file system has nothing at all to do with the hard drive diagnostic.\

hamluis

Hi but the test would state whether there was a problem with the system files and system drivers if you fill it the hard disk then I would then recommend running a chkdsk scan using windows command line search cmd> right Click> Run As Administrator and type chkdsk /f /r

but if it where what you say then I agree if it can not complete the scan it does not look good but other checks will start to confirm other things the issue is within the title problem with explorer.exe if it was the case then system file checker would pick up on this.

and yes the sea tools is the right one to run and is going to give you the most information I agree with that but will help to discover if it is the hard disk or not you could though out a perfect hard disk for not checking the system files first I thought it was a good shout.

Kind Regards

Hi Dregs

Are you using the Windows version of Seatool ? . If yes, please use the bootable DOS version as Hamluis instructed.

I am running the bootable DOS version. I boot up from my disk drive in order to run it. Also I can't open the CBS log because it says I have denied access to it

Edit: Ran seatools again, finished and it passed. I still can't access the cbs.log and will make a new post with the results of the check disk

Hi

Sounds like a software issue to me. Please try the below steps.

- Remove Trend Micro completely. Use the official removal tool.

  http://esupport.trendmicro.com/solution/en-us/1056551.aspx

We recommend Microsoft Security Essentials for better performance and reliability.

- Update the Video drivers.

Remove the current AMD catalyst control center and driver. Now download and install the latest driver from below link.

The dump is 804k should I upload that to somewhere?

Did everything and restarted computer. Doesn't seem to have done anything

Also with the chkdsk test I didn't see the end of the 5th stage but during all the stages there didn't seem to be anything wrong.

Found out how to see cbs.log anything I need to put on here?

Thanks for all the help everyone!

-Victor
