Hello, recently I decided to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP Professional SP3, and everything went smoothly until driver installations.

According to AIDA64, I have an "Analog Devices 1981B(L) @ Intel 82801GB ICH7 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-1]". I tried various drivers, before going to the IBM website and downloading their SoundMAX Audio driver. Remembering that before I reinstalled, it said I had a SoundMAX device, I was ecstatic that I was finally going to be able to have audio on my PC again. I installed the drivers, restarted, and everything was working perfectly, until my computer started to restart without warning. This happened more than once, so I was forced to uninstall the driver. After doing so, my computer stopped randomly restarting.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

(Here is a link to the driver I was attempting to use.)

If this is a OEM computer please post the make and model?

If this is a custom build please post the make and model of the motherboard if you are using a integrated card, if not, post the dedicated card's make and model.

Hi

Did you uninstalled the incorrect drivers you tried before attempting to install the driver from IBM ?. If you didn't , go to "Control Panel-->Add\Remove Programs" and uninstall the incorrect ones (IE Realtek Ac 97 ) . You should be able to see "Multimedia audio controller" in yellow question mark in device manager. If you see "Avance AC 97 audio" or something other with an exclamation mark, it will be a driver clash.

That is the correct.  The download may have had a glitch.  Uninstall it and try it again.  I would also uninstall any other audio drivers that you tried previously.

It shows up as Multimedia Audio Controller in Device Manager.

However, my computer just restarted a few minutes ago, after having been fine for an hour or two.

The following involves editing the registry which if errors are made you will want to have the registry backed up.

[*]Please download Erunt.

[*]For version with the Installer:  Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer.

[*]For the zipped version you will need a program like 7-Zip to unzip the file.[/list]

[*]Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERUNT.exe

Go to Start> Run and type in regedit.exe[/b]

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\i804prt\Parameters.

Right click on REG_WORD, New will appear and a menu will open, click on DWORD, name it Headless and set the value to 1.

Restart the computer.

I tried doing as you said, however, there is only "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt", and so I added the key there. Is that the proper place? If so, will the driver properly work now?

If you expand the path of i804prt you will find Parameters which is where the DWORD should be added.

Go back and delete what you added and go on to Parameters.

My mistake, I meant to say "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters".

Also, mine looks slightly different. I also have a "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Enum".

If you put it in Parameters it is correct.

One of the repeated error in the Event Viewer was the i804prt, this is to correct that.  Reboot your computer and see if this helps.

Alright, rebooted, let's see if this helps.

EDIT: It hasn't restarted on it's own after reinstalling the driver, but now audio is crackly/laggy.

EDIT 2: A minute or two after editing this post prior to this edit, it restarted on it's own again.

It just restarted, after having been fine for ~12+ hours. I was uninstalling various programs, primarily the Driver related ones (Driver Reviver, etc) and the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver that I had found in Add/Remove Programs (Which is weird because before I had installed the SoundMAX drivers it said Multimedia Audio Device in Device Manager.). I restarted, everything was okay, and I tried to open Task Manager. My PC restarted before it could open. However, I just now opened it, and my CPU Usage starts to hit around 70-80% whenever I move the cursor. My cursor freezes randomly, for a split second, Task Manager open or not, when I move it now. It's done this since I added the registry key if I remember correctly. When I open the SoundMAX control panel, and test my audio, CPU Usage goes up to ~30%.
