I had a tech recently install a fresh copy of Win7 on my PC, after he replaced my hard drive. Now, he won't answer his phone. He has basically left me hanging.

 I have 2 questions:

1) He installed it from a thumb drive that he had with him. How did he do that? And how can I get that ability?

2) Since I don't have a product key or disc, is there a way I can backup my Win7 OS in case of a crash or virus?

Thanks.

<<Since I don't have a product key or disc, is there a way I can backup my Win7 OS in case of a crash or virus.>>

Are you saying that you don't have a legal install of Windows 7 on that Dell?

Dell Inspirion 530...Dell doesn't reflect any drivers for Win 7 for that system.

Louis,

Thank you for replying.

I'm not sure if I have a "legal install" or not. A tech who worked on my PC installed it for me after he replaced my hard drive. He also installed Bitdefender and Microsoft Office 2010.

Before that, I was running Vista.

Also, I'm not sure what you meant by, "Dell Inspirion 530...Dell doesn't reflect any drivers for Win 7 for that system.".

Are you suggesting that Win7 is not working properly on my PC because of the lack of drivers needed?

Because usually it works fine. It just has a tendency to freeze up at times, which is another issue I am working on...

There are ways you check to see if your Windows is genuine.

Start here http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate

Install the tool. After installation click Continue.

If the validation tool is already installed the validation process will start automatically.

The validation process will start.

When finished you will be told that it is or is not genuine.

I don't know what will show up if it not. If it is the page goes to Welcome to Windows with a notice in the green box saying it is genuine.

<<Are you suggesting that Win7 is not working properly on my PC because of the lack of drivers needed?>>

Exactly...that system wasn't designed for Win 7 and I'm curious as to what drivers might actually be installed.

Another consideration...is the source of your Win 7 install.  If your "tech" downloaded/used an illegal version of Win 7...there is certainly the chance of the system being infected, along with the possible driver problem.

Windows/any system....has freezes...for the same reasons that humans often need to cough, regurgitate, etc...something is detected as being "wrong" by the system/Windows...and it does what it can to call attention to it.

COMPUTER FREEZES - http://www.jrwhipple.com/computer_hangs.html

But...the overriding issue on your situation, from my perspective, is legality/illegality of the install.  Your Dell system license is not for Win 7.

Thank you Louis.

I did run a check, and my Win7 is legal and genuine.

And thank you for all the info you gave me.

Perhaps the occasional freezing up is just "hiccups"?

It is so random, and unexpected...

I have some concerns from what I have seen thus far.

Error: (05/19/2013 01:44:34 AM) (Source: Application Error)(User: )
Description: RegCurePro.exe3.1.5.051841204RegCurePro.exe3.1.5.051841204c000000500079e0a5cc401ce546c1478dd1cC:\Program Files (x86)\ParetoLogic\RegCure Pro\RegCurePro.exeC:\Program Files (x86)\ParetoLogic\RegCure Pro\RegCurePro.exe54328aa1-c060-11e2-8afe-001d098b0ff1

That error indicates install/use of a program which may have removed/damaged system files.  Although there is no indication that this app is currently installed...damage may have occurred prior to its removal

I suggest that you either do a repair install of Win 7...or run the sfc /scannow command, in an effort to replace/repair damaged/missing system files

The install date of your Win 7 version is 12 Mar 2013.  Does that mean that you've been having problems for almost 3 months...before asking for assistance?  If not, when did problems begin?

Since your system boots...there are any number of tools which can be used to obtain your Win 7 license key data.  You should employ one of these, write down the key and place it in a safe place for future reference.

One that should work:  http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ , select the free version and download it.  You can also find the same information by opening the Speccy program from the All Programs menu...and then double-clicking on the Operating System section...the key will be reflected among the detail.

You should never post this key on the Web, for any purpose.  It relates to your install of Windows and is not meant for others to use (which, in turn, would eliminate your ability to use the key).

Louis,

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me with this.

Yes, this problem has been occurring since about two days after I had my PC serviced on March 12. The man who did the work told me for a week or 2 that he was going to come back and look at it, but he never did, and eventually he just stopped answering my calls. He told me his work was guaranteed.  :(

I was very glad to finally discover this site on my journey to becoming my own IT.

I did begin a download of the regcurepro site recently (because it was recommended in a training video I watched), but I did not purchase it, and stopped at the place where they wanted money for it. After that I don't recall if I had to delete it from my programs or not...but as of now it is not there. I could check the registry, but I use ccleaner on a regular basis, and I clean both the files and the registry with that...

I have heard of the sfc /scannow command, but am not sure how to run it properly.

Could you advise me as to where I could find a rundown of that?

Also, I hope I have not posted my product key with my screenshots. Have I?

If so, please advise so I may delete that info.

I looked on Speccy as you said, and I see a serial number on the OS. It is a series of 25 numbers and letters in groups of 5 separated by hyphens. Is that the key?

Thank you again so much for your help...

Yes, that's the key :).

I would also advise you...NOT to run the "registry cleaner" portion of Ccleaner.  And I will advise you that you need to check your Ccleaner settings...and ensure that it does NOT delete dump files during "cleanup".

Eventually...I'll tell you how to backup your system safely and with confidence :).

Louis
