Posted 21 May 2013 - 11:46 AM

I have an ACER Aspire 5250 laptop SNID 20103232016 running Windows 7.  I don't know the cause but the system has started to become very slow at times with windows going unresponsive. To get things moving often opening the task bar (cntr-alt-del) will work. But not for long.

I have run chkdsk with no reported issues, I updated the system bios, and a bunch of hardware drivers. I ran Avira scan, Malwarebytes scan, and the ESET scanner recommended in an earlier similar post with no issues.

Any suggestions?

I suggest running the appropriate hard drive diagnostic, as a first step.

Pllease run the long, extended test.  Post the results.

Thanks Louis, I had run the short and SMART scans but not the long one. 5 Minutes into it I got a failure:

So I re-ran the long scan using the DOS version of seatools as per the Windows seatool instructions. It found 98 bad sectors with a 2 1/2 hour scan and I had it repair them. That seemed to work. I then ran a chkdsk which found no errors.

As a side benefit I have my Bios, hardware drivers and software versions all up-to-date and learned of a few more good utilities.

The downside is that I ran Malwarebytes again and half way through it started doing the same old freezing. It stops and the whole window goes unresponsive. A while later it starts up again. I wonder if the drive failures were the actual issue or if I have another problem to find?

Deal.

I would say that the hard drive is the problem...and replace it.  I never continue to use a drive which fails, for whatever reason, the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic.

IMO...the real danger of bad sectors...is that they can be an indication of defect in the hard drive.
