Hi there.

After running ComboFix and severing my internet connection, I have been working with Nasdaq in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware and Malware Removal Logs forum.  We've reached the end of the line and Nasdaq no longer believes this is something he can help me with, so I have been directed here.

Please see the attached link for history on our efforts to repair my computer's internet connection:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/493916/just-ran-combofix-cant-connect-to-internet-2013/

So. I have absolutely no listing for "DNS Client" in Services...  See Nasdaq's final directives to me on page 2.  Nasdaq also asked me to run a fresh MiniToolBox log and post to here.

Can anyone help me?

MiniToolBox log follows:

Hello,

Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.

  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

ONCE THAT IS DONE.

Please:

Download following registry fix: http://www.filedropper.com/dnscache
Double click on downloaded file and confirm the prompt.

Restart computer, check on internet connection and post new FSS log.

PLEASE create a new restore point before editing the registry!!!

Hi, thanks.

An writing to you from work computer.  The affected computer is my home computer.  I will download the Farbar Service Scanner as run it as directed on the home computer, but I do not believe I can create a new restore point.  Tried doing that when I was being assisted in the previous Malware Log Removal forum, and was unable to activate that function.  The computer refused to allow that.  Told me to restart and try again, over and over.

Please advise  what I am to do if I cannot create a new restore point.

RE: http://www.filedropper.com/dnscache...  Am I to join FileDropper?  It seems to be an uploading site, not downloading...  and I have to pay for it after a seven-day trial?  Not so comfortable with that - any alternative?  Sorry I am such a novice.

Thanks,
Paul.

Please follow these steps carefully. Since you're not able to create a system restore, I recommend being careful and do only what is listed.

Download XP.zip file from here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/files/download/9-registry-network-keys/
Unzip the file.
You'll find three files inside.

Right click on ipsec.reg file, click "Merge".
Allow registry merge.

Right click on netbt.reg file, click "Merge".
Allow registry merge.

Restart computer and post new Farbar Service Scanner log.

Thanks.  There are 11 files inside.  I take it I need to have all of them on my computer but only right click on the two files in your directions.

Will get this done this evening.

Alright, another question, I have is do you have another computer that you can use to export reg files from a working pc, to the bad pc? A lot of reg entries are unique to that pc only, but it's worth a shot. Also do you have the windows xp cd? You can do a repair from that cd, and maybe fix it that way as well.

What we want to do here is export the Dnscache on a working pc, and then merge it into the bad pc.

I don't have another XP computer.  I can get a laptop with Windows 7 or 8, and I have my work computer, which is running windows 7 Enterprise.

I might have the XP disk, but I'll have to go look for it.  It's probably in my storage unit (not in my house).

Thanks!

I don't believe the registry files are compatible from 7 to xp and vise versa. So you'll need to be able to get a windows xp computer or cd.

However, there is this program that we haven't tried yet, that may be able to help us out. It's called Windows Repair AIO . You can download it, and put it on the computer.

Then when you launch it, please do steps 3, 4 "If possible", and then click on Start Repairs. Please do all the repairs except for "Repair Icons, and Repair Print Spooler" and lets see what happens. This may not fix the registry issues, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Thanks...  This look like something I have to pay for.  The directions say " First step: Scan for a free report; Second step:  Purchase your license key and begin restoration; Third step: Repair, replace, fix..!"  (paraphrasing there)

I won't be able to do an online payment.

I downloaded it...  do you think I should bother?  If not, I'll just have to go to my storage unit one day soon.

Also, I take it I should cancel my subscription to FileDropper?

The program is free, and yes don't bother about filedropper. Click on that direct link, and then click on download, and beside it, it will say direct download. From there you can download it straight from the website. Install the program, and then continue the steps. You may of clicked on the wrong link, or a different program or something, because there is no charge for the Windows Repair AIO program.
