Hello there,

I have a refurbished Advent D2111 with the following specs:-
8 GB RAM
Intel i5 2320 quad 3.0 GHz
2 TB HDD
ATI Radeon HD 6670
430W PSU
running windows 7 home premium 64bit
I'm afraid I don't know the brands of the memory, HDD, PSU, or motherboard. Basically I bought this thing last October and it was fine for some time. However it started crashing frequently: something inside the tower would beep (as the desktop normally does when it turns off) and it would either crash immediately and revert to a BSOD before restarting, or the screen would freeze over and huge stripes of distorted colours would appear before I had to restart manually. This was some months ago and I thought I fixed the problem when I reinstalled Windows. But it's been happening again, more recently. I tried to reinstall windows again but the installation failed and I had to take it to get repaired. The core problem was not solved however. Interestingly it tends to survive on a clean boot, whereas otherwise the BSOD occurs very quickly. It does not occur on Safe Mode. Running HDD checks and sfc hasn't solved the problem, and I'm currently using only one stick of ram to see if the other is faulty. I thought it might be my graphics card overheating and so manually turned the fan higher on Catalyst Control which seemed to do some good but today hasn't seemed to work. I think it might be the hard disk, and Windows Action Center identified some possible problem there, though the prompt has disappeared now. My BSOD STOP code is 0x00000074 (0x0000000000000002, 0xFFFFF880043F09E0, 0XFFFFFFFFC000003A), reading BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO. Having googled this I see on Windows 7 it normally refers to a faulty registry but I don't see how this could be the case considering Windows was only reinstalled a few days ago. I think it is a hardware issue but I don't know how to identify the guilty part.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm at my wit's end!

Thanks

UPDATE: I realised I was being an idiot not checking my HDD, and motherboard brands; they are as follows:
HDD: Seagate ST2000DL003
Motherboard: Foxconn H61MXL-k
BIOS: American megatrends version BB503A01
also the Radeon card is 2gb if that is relevant at all.

Thanks

Hi

From the description you provided one of the hardware in your system is either faulty or incompatible with the motherboard. Follow the below steps one by one.

1 ) Remove the graphics card and use on board VGA instead to test if the card is faulty.

2 )According to this Microsoft article, this error can happen if the RAM modules are incompatible with the system.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326679

Since you are getting this error even when running the system with only one module plugged, i suspect either speed or timing values of the RAM modules are not matching with your board. You need to try a known compatible RAM to know if it is the problem.

3 ) If removing graphics card and isolating RAM can't solve the issue, post basic info about you system in next reply by following the below instructions.

A ) Post the brand and model of your RAM modules

  B ) Post a snapshot of your system using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Don't paste the output of speccy here. Instead paste the web link it displays.

 C ) Download "Minitoolbox" - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Run it and select only the following items :

-List last 10 Event viewer errors

      -List installed programs

      -List minidumps

      -List devices

-List users, partition and memory size

Now click "Go" and post the output.

I removed one stick of RAM but the crashes continued, so I swapped them round and now I haven't had a crash for a while. I also took out my graphics card as you suggested, and have put it back in - no BSODs in either case. Except - I downloaded the Razer Game Booster program yesterday, but when I tried to run it and log in while my PC had the graphics card in, the PC froze and distorted graphical stripes covered the screen. On a hunch, I tried to run it without the graphics card in, and got a BSOD error saying SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION (STOP code: 0x000000C1). Would you recommend testing the ram with something like Memtest86?

Following your recommendations, here is a Speccy Snapshot of my system (currently only one stick of RAM inserted) I hope this is what you meant, apologies if I have done it wrong.
http://speccy.piriform.com/results/LKSXpYtjlWMI5VJ4UZWJfmd

Here are the minitoolbox results - is there a way to link them so I don't have to paste this huge block of text?
Thanks for all your help so far!

Hi

Until the issue is resolved , remove the graphics card and only use the on board VGA. I strongly doubt RAM compatibility is causing the trouble. Often BIOS updates includes compatibility update for  RAM modules so our first step is to update the BIOS. Follow the below steps. Updating BIOS in Foxconn is a little difficult.

- Download the latest BIOS package from the below link and unzip it. Plug a USB flash drive in the USB drive.

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/driverdownload/Motherboard/Intel/Socket%201155/H61MXL/BIOS/BB5F1P04.zip

- Now open "DOS image" folder inside it and open HPUSBFW application. You will see a window like this.

  HP_USB_Format_Tool.gif

- Select your USB device from the "Device" tab. Under format option tick "Quick Format" and "Create a DOS startup disk".

- Use the browse window under "using system files located :" and select the folder HPUSBFW inside DOS Image folder. Now click start to format and make the pen drive bootable.

- Now copy all files located in SYSBIOS folder to the root of USB drive.

- Restart the system and enter in to the BIOS by pressing F2 and change the boot device to USB drive. Alternatively you can press F7 during power on to bring the boot menu and select the USB device from it.

- If everything is OK, you will boot in to a DOS prompt. Enter dosflash in the prompt and press enter to start the BIOS update. Follow the onscreen instructions and restart the system when ask. Now boot from the hard disk and check if BSOD appears.

Hello,

I did as you requested but was met with this:
Error: ROM file ROMID is not compatible with existing BIOS ROMID.

I then had to turn off the PC and reboot.
Interestingly when I first entered the DOS prompt, the Windows version at the top of the screen said "Windows 98" (?!) - could it be that out of date?

Thanks

Hi

The BIOS update link i posted is copied from the official download page of Foxconn. Here is the support page of yours -

http://www.foxconnchannel.com/ProductDetail.aspx?T=motherboard&U=en-us0000554

Speccy reported your system BIOS version as BB5D3A01 . Interestingly, there is no such version is listed in the official download link page. As you can see B63F1P02 is the initial BIOS and BB5F1P04 is the latest BIOS. No wonder BIOS update tool reported a mismatch. Can you open the side cover and verify the exact model name ? (including the revision number - if any).

In the first post you mentioned an attempt to reinstall Windows failed. Can you remeber what error you faced during the install ? . What the repair shop said about the error ?

Hello,

I found my BIOS chip inside the PC - it's a Winbond. I presume you mean the model name of the Motherboard? If so it's MPBF12K0000-0L, and on another label it says UH81211147699 PC H61MXL-K.
Not sure which of these is useful.

The people at the repair shop were quite vague and I'm afraid I don't remember the error number or description. The man did say, when I asked him what was wrong, that the partition had collapsed (though this is an effect rather than the cause).

Thanks for your help so far.

Also - I just had a new BSOD, with only one stick of RAM and no graphics card installed - this one had the STOP code 0X000000F4, which I haven't seen before. Also, just after this, I replaced my current 430W PSU with a new 500W PSU - just thought I'd let you know.
Also, on the reboot after the BSOD, windows ran a diskcheck, found some corrupted segments, and apparently fixed them.

Thanks

Hi

Yes , i mean the model number of the mother board. Did you see "Foxconn" emblem on the board ?

Seeing different STOP error codes each time is an indication of RAM related faults. Before jumping in to a conclusion we need to analyze the crash dump files. Do the following steps.

1 ) Open "C:\Windows\Minidump" folder. Zip and upload all files inside that folder (.dmp) to a free file hosting site like "Mediafire" -http://www.mediafire.com/

Post the download link to it in next reply.

2 ) Download Seagate Seatool for DOS - http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Burn it to a CD by following the guidelines in this link -http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/201431en

Boot from the CD and run a "Long test" -

We are doing this to make sure HDD is in good condition. If seatool found any error, report it in the next reply.

Hi,

Here's the mediafire link to minidump.7z:-
http://www.mediafire.com/download/znnkybs82z810bo/Minidump.7z

Initially the Seatools didn't recognise my HDD, so I changed the SATA configuration from AHCI to Native IDE and then it worked. The HDD passed the long test with no errors, though upon rebooting I got a BSOD with STOP code 0x0000007B - when I changed the SATA config back to AHCI the PC booted with no issues.

Thanks

Hi

Out of the 12 dump files you posted, 9 of them shows same stop code - 0x000000F4 CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION

Here is the Microsoft's technical explanation about this error code - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff560372(v=vs.85).aspx

Unfortunately Microsoft article didn't specify any particular reason for this error. This is a vary generic error code. Follow the below steps to address some possible reasons.

1 ) There is a known bug in Windows 7 which cause this BSOD in systems with 1 TB or higher HDD. As your HDD is 2 TB, we should try the hotfix available  from Microsoft site to address this issue. Below is the download link for the hotfix.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977178

If you receive a message "This hotfix is not applicable to your system" when you try to install, your system is not affected with this bug.

2 ) Open "control Panel--> Programs" and uninstall "Intel Chipset" and "Intel Rapid Storage" (if present). Now download and install latest chipset and IRST from intel site.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/20775/eng/infinst_autol.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=20775&ProductID=816&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Chipset+Software+Installation+Utility

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/22787/a08/SetupRST.exe&lang=eng&Dwnldid=22787&ProductID=2101&ProductFamily=Software+Products&ProductLine=Chipset+Software&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel%C2%AE+RST)

Check if the above steps make any differences.

Hello,

I have installed the hotfix, which told me "the files had unzipped successfully" so I'm presuming that installed properly. "Intel Chipset" and "Intel rapid storage" were not present on my installed programs list so I downloaded and installed as recommended. I also downloaded a new intel driver via Windows update that has optimised my VGA display.
To be honest I haven't experienced the original problem of the STOP code mentioned in the first post (ie. "something inside the tower would beep (as the desktop normally does when it turns off) and it would either crash immediately and revert to a BSOD before restarting") since I took out the stick of RAM - other errors and BSODs with different STOP codes have occurred as I have told you. Do you think the main problem could be with faulty/incompatible RAM?

Thanks again for your help this far.

Hi

Did you experienced more BSOD after installing the update and drivers ?

Beep codes usually indicates a hardware problem, especially RAM. Since the beep code is stopped after removing one RAM, either that RAM may be faulty or incompatible. Faulty RAM clock frequency  can also produce this type of errors. To make sure RAM is not overclocked, enter in to BIOS setup and load the default values.

Hello,

I have not experienced a BSOD since installing updates and drivers. My PC has not beeped once, frozen, and suffered the described BSOD since I removed the stick of RAM. I have loaded the default BIOS values.
Would you recommend replacing the currently removed stick of RAM to see if that induces BSOD errors? Or downloading and running Memtest86?

Thanks
