Hi there,

I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.

It is an Intel dual CPU T2310 @ 1.46 GHz

There is 1 GB RAM

Some time back it began to run very slowly.

After trying various things (virus and malware scans, check disc, defragmenting and disk clean-up included) I decided to reset to factory settings.

Things are still as slow as ever though.

I would very much appreciate any help before I decide to give up and get a new laptop.

Thanks.

Paul

FWIW:  1GB of RAM...isn't very much for a system that has OEM-installed overhead and also has applications installed which may tax the capabilities of the system.  There are other factors which may contribute to system slowness.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic323892.html/page__p__1797792#entry1797792 , taking care to post the link.  Do not copy/paste data from the report.

Hi,

Since everything takes so long - don't want to risk crashing and losing things - here is the first item.

The other will follow.

Thanks

That's how long this machine takes to accomplish simple things like that.

Second what Louis says about 1GB ram, but I gather the system was originally faster than it is now, and you have correctly gone back to factory settings. In this case, the issue is probably hardware and I'd put 20:1 odds on it being your hard drive. If the laptop has diagnostics option on startup, usually F10 or F11 and may be entitled boot options. If so, run the extended hard drive test.

Alternatively, download Seatools For Dos http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

burn to CD /DVD

boot from the CD (you may have to press a button to change your boot options)

If the hard drive fails its test, you will have to replace it.

Hi,

Please forgive my ignorance - didn't see an option for anything like 'extended hard drive test'.

Saw memory test but assumed that was something different.

Where exactly?

I ran the memory diagnostics test since I was there - no errors found.

This explains how, skip to hard disk test part

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c00372711&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=3466274

  1. Plug the AC Adapter into the computer.
  2. Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu.
  4. Use the Right Arrow or Left Arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to locate the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option. Depending on your BIOS, this may be located below either Diagnostics or Tools .
  5. Select Primary Hard Drive Self Test , and then press the Enter key to start the test.
NOTE: The exact wording of the option for your particular BIOS may be slightly different.

Choose compreshensive test

To add to your situation...I suggest you uninstall (and cease using) your currently installed "registry cleaner/optimizer" tools.  There is no telling what they have done to your registry/system.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons.  Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

Per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry :

“The Windows registry stores all application settings in one logical repository (but a number of discrete files) and in a standardized form.  The registry contains important configuration information for the operating system, for installed applications as well as individual settings for each user and application. A careless change to the operating system configuration in the registry could cause irreversible damage, so it is usually only installer programs which perform changes to the registry database during installation/configuration and removal.  If a user wants to edit the registry manually, Microsoft recommends that a backup of the registry is performed before the change.  Editing the registry is sometimes necessary when working around Windows-specific issues e.g. problems when logging onto a domain can be resolved by editing the registry.  The Windows registry can be edited manually using programs such as regedit.exe, although these tools do not expose some of registry's metadata such as the last modified date.”

Put simply, the Windows registry is a central repository of information about all aspects of the

computer - in particular, its hardware, operating system, applications and users.

More per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registry_cleaner  :

“A registry cleaner is a class of third party software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system, whose purported purpose is to remove redundant items from the Windows registry.

Registry cleaners are not supported by Microsoft, but vendors of Registry cleaners claim that they are useful to repair inconsistencies arising from manual changes to applications, especially COM-based programs.  The necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts in disagreement over their benefits. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware are often associated with utilities of this type.

There is a popular misconception that the value of registry cleaning lies in reducing "registry bloat". Even a neglected registry will seldom contain more than two or three thousand redundant entries. Bearing in mind that the modern registry may contain more than a million entries, the elimination of two or three thousand will not save any noticeable amount of scanning time.  Some registry cleaners make no distinction as to the severity of the errors, and many that do may erroneously categorize errors as "critical" with little basis to support it. It.  Removing or changing certain registry data can prevent the system from starting, or cause application errors and crashes

A poorly-designed registry cleaner may not be equipped to know for sure whether a key is still being used by Windows or what detrimental effects removing it may have. This may lead to loss of functionality and/or system instability.  While it is true that some registry cleaners are safe, these cleaners do not improve performance. The rest are a mix of snake-oil, actual malware, or dangerously powerful tools unsuited to non-professionals.”

For the reasons pointed out above and others…BC does not encourage/suggest that any member employ…a registry cleaner/optimizer.

Hi again,

Thanks for the advice so far.

I have now run the hard drive test - the extended version.

It passed ok.

I will indeed remove the registry cleaner software (actually a well-meaning friend used these in trying to locate my problem before I came here).

Any other things I might look at now?

Sorry if I am being impatient - I have run the hard drive test suggested but that was a diagnosis only so the dreadful slowness is still there.
Any further suggestions?

Many thanks.

Get Vista bang up to date with service packs etc then try a clean boot to see if this helps. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

This entry is puzzling me:

Description: The name "PAULANDGURINDER:20" could not be registered on the interface with IP address 192.168.0.5.
The computer with the IP address 192.168.0.2 did not allow the name to be claimed by
this computer.

Error: (05/16/2013 04:01:38 PM) (Source: Server) (User: )

Perhaps you need to rename the computer  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/change-your-computer-name-in-windows-vista/

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in returning.

It took a while to find the time to run the clean reboot so many times.

I have now done that.

The odd thing is that it has run fine from the very first reboot.

It doesn't seem to make a difference which applications I tick or untick - the speed is back to normal.

I have now put everything back - just as it was before the first clean reboot - things seem fine.

But I assume that I haven't actually changed anything?

I have also renamed the computer as suggested.

Prior to beginning this thread I had found that running checkdisc seemed to speed things up temporarily and then the terrible speed failures returned in a day or so.

I wonder if this is just a similar temporary improvement.

Hopefully not!

:-)

So - I'll run things for a while and see what happens.

Again - thank you very much for your help.

You run a fantastic service here.

Today the system is back to usual slow pace.
Painfully slow shutdown taking around five minutes or so.
Any further options?

Thanks
