***If it's possible to assist me with both computers, I would be sincerely appreciative***  (thank you in advance)

Unfortunately, both of my computers are infected with the actual same problem.  Yesterday morning I noticed both computers were receiving Time Out messages for most web pages I was visiting.  Google worked fine, so did most forums, but Yahoo did not and neither did anything with a lot of graphics.

This morning, everything is working again.

This is the exact same problem I had about 6 months ago (turned out to be a virus) and I can't figure out how this keeps happening.  Is there a way to trace how I picked up these viruses?  I consider myself internet savy, but there must be some website I'm visiting that causes this problem.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete tab follow the prompts.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quote box below into it:

Registry::
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"{90140000-001A-0409-1000-0000000FF1CE}"=-
"{90140000-003D-0000-1000-0000000FF1CE}"=-

ClearJavaCache::
Save this as CFScript.txt on your desktop.

CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Be careful not to install malware posing as Java update!
Important read this blog.
http://blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/malware-poses-as-an-update-for-java-0-day-fix/

Quoted from the page.
"In light of the recent events surrounding Java, users must seriously consider their use of Java. Do they really need it? If yes, make sure that users follow the steps we recommended and get the security update directly from the official oracle website." at:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

How to disable Java in your browsers
http://www.infoworld.com/t/web-browsers/how-disable-java-in-your-browsers-210882

You can manually check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 7 Update 9

Note
Java security update installs Ask Toolbar by default -- a single click in a multi-step installer.
http://www.benedelman.org/images/iac-jan13/ask-iac-011613-small.png
I suggest that your un-check the box "Install the Ask Toolbar" before proceeding.
===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

If the problem persists please run these tools.

Read carefully and follow these steps.
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application.
    tdss1.png
  • Click Change parameters
    settings20121003115955.png
  • Check the boxes next to Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK
    tdss3.png
  • Click on the Start Scan button to begin the scan and wait for it to finish.
    NOTE: Do not use the computer during the scan!
  • During the scan it will look similar to the image below:
    tdss4.jpg
  • When it finishes, you will either see a report that no threats were found like below:
    tdss5.jpg
    If no threats are found at this point, just click the Report selection on the top right of the form to generate a log. A log file report will pop which you can just close since the report file is already saved.
  • If any infection or suspected items are found, you will see a window similar to below:
    tdss7.jpg
    • If you have files that are shown to fail signature check do not take any action on these. Make sure you select Skip. I will tell you what to do with these later. They may not be issues at all.
    • If Suspicious objects are detected, the default action will be Skip. Leave the default set to Skip.
    • If Malicious objects are detected, they will show in the Scan results. TDSSKiller automatically selects an action (Cure or Delete) for malicious objects
    • Make sure that Cure is selected. Important! - If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead. Do not choose Delete unless instructed to do so.
  • Click Continue to apply selected actions.
  • A reboot may be required to complete disinfection. A window like the below will appear:
    tdss6.jpg
    Reboot immediately if TDSSKiller states that one is needed.
  • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should have already been created on your C: drive (or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run.
  • Paste the log to your next reply, DO NOT ATTACH IT.
===

Download http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe (aswMBR.exe) to your desktop. Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
  • Click the "Scan" button to start scan.
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log, and save it to your desktop. (Note - do not select any Fix at this time) <- IMPORTANT
  • Please paste the contents of that log in your next reply.
There shall also be a file on your desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) folder. Please attach that zipped file in your next reply.
===

Post the logs do not ATTACH THEM.

That is where this problem has had interesting consequences.  When I first noticed this problem last year, the virus literally only caused me problems for 24hrs, then everything went back to normal.  Then almost exactly one week later, it screwed up my computer again...but only for 24hrs.  I cleaned the computer out using similar steps we just went through and didn't have the problem again until recently.

This round I'm having the exact same problem.  The virus only affected me for 24hrs and then the next morning my computer was running like normal...even though all of my scans couldn't find the virus.

To answer your question directly, my computer has been running fine for the last few days.  :)

I may have missed it, but did any of these scans find the problem?

Thanks again for all your help.

Nothing unusual found.

I know that ComboFix does reset some items but they are unknown to me.

If it had been a virus I would have seen some indications.

If all is well:

Time for some housekeeping
  • The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:
  • ComboFix /Uninstall
===

To remove AdwCleaner.

Please double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Uninstall.
Confirm with Yes.

If you decide to keep the AdwCleaner tool make sure to delete your version and download the latest before running it.

Delete the other tools we used.
You can Keep the DDS tool as most forum will ask to see a log before suggesting a fix.

Thank you Nasdaq.

Any idea what could have caused this then?  It's strange that it afflicted two of three computers on the same day...identical to a problem from last year.

When this problem is active, it won't allow my computer to connect to certain servers...notably Windows Update and Security Essentials.

It also will allow me to only connect to the basic of websites and the visuals never load correctly...for most sites I receive a time out error.

No idea what could cause this other than the site is taking too much time to respond.
Intermittent problems are difficult to fix.

Next time is happens run the Farbar Service Scanner tool.
Compare the log with the clean one submitted in post no. 4.
