Although it's a XP machine, that may not be relevant to this problem.

My Windows XP desktop seems to work perfectly well most of the time. But sometimes it just seems to refuse to turn on. I switch it on, but nothing happens, except that the fans come on (also a light on the motherboard turns on & I know the USB sockets are powered as I have a small light plugged into one). This happened this morning. I switched on, the screen just said "No Video content" or something like that. I switched off the power, then on again. I did this about 50 times. Then for some reason it started up ok. Once it's on, it's always fine. I have looked at the insides and there is nothing obviously out of place, nor any loose wires. But I may be missing something obvious (as I don't really know what to look for!)  This has been going on for a few months now. Yesterday, strangely, it turned on ok 1st time. But usually I have to do it a few times before it gets going. Today it was 50+ times, but usually it's less than that, although I don't keep an accurate record!

Another problem (which may be unrelated) is that audio plays only in one channel. I've checked the speakers, they both work fine, it's somewhere in the output from the PC.

Another problem, again probably unrelated, is that I cannot send attachments with gmail email.

Other than that, it works perfectly. I'm just worried that one day it won't turn on at all, and it probably isn't doing the machine much good to keep switching it on & off 50 or maybe more times.

It's a Philips iqon, bought in Tesco supermarket in Ireland in December 2005. XP Home. Hard drive: 150gb, (4gb free at the moment);1.5gb ram (I upgraded it a few years ago)

I don't think I made any changes that may have caused this behaviour. A few weeks ago I gave it a good clean with a small USB vacuum cleaner and got rid of loads of dust, but it didn't seem to improve.

I have a laptop which I normally use, but I'd like to get the desktop working, it's sometimes handy to have both machines.

Thanks to any contributors.Any ideas welcome.

Sounds like a failing motherboard /graphics card. If you have a separate graphics card, try reseating it, otherwise take it to a repair shop. You could also try replacing the bios battery (watch type battery) - I found that works sometimes in these cases.

A point that seems to have been overlooked in Ricardo's original post - he has a 150Gb hard drive with only 4Gb free. This is very little free space. I was taught that you should never exceed 90% of the capacity of a hard drive because of the need for temporary space for page files etc..

The other point is that this is an eight year old computer. As a repair / replace problem I would have to suggest that it is time to seriously consider a new one - this one doesn't owe him very much !

FWIW:  The fact that he doesn't have sufficient free space...is why I asked for the data summaries requested.  The major liability with such systems is in the performance area, when compared to newer systems that have evolved.

As for age of the system...with proper care a system tends to be capable of running forever, as can be asserted by all those who have older systems.

Again, I believe we should take a look at a larger picture...before just saying that it's "this" or "that".

Thanks Louis, & Chris & Adam.

Sorry for delay, I wasn't on the site for while. I have tried to run speccy a few times, but it won't complete; everything seems to be done except it says: Peripherals...analyzing, & it never finishes. There is no option to File - publish, probably as it won't complete. I unplugged the printer cable, but it still won't complete.

But here's the minitoolbox result:

IMO, this must be corrected...before you can possibly hope that Windows functions properly.

Louis,

I will look into that, thank you. Speccy still wouldn't finish its report, it was left running for hours again the other day, then I would stop it & start it again. It keeps getting stuck on Peripherals. I couldn't even see it a couple of times, but Ctrl-ALT-Del showed it running so I had to stop it in that before I could start it again. I had been clicking on it with no response, so I guessed it must have been running even though it didn't show in the open programmes bar. But as I said, once it starts Windows works perfectly well (if a bit slow, but I'm getting used to using the laptop, a faster machine, so that's not surprising). I'll be away for a few weeks now.

Is it straightforward to fix this? What does it mean? (It says (Fixed). Also, I didn't know I had a partition. (Do I?)

Please excuse my ignorance! Thank you for your patience. I hope to have a bit of time when I get back from visiting Canada & upstate New York...

The "fixed" notation refers to the hard drive, distinguishing it from a removeable drive.

You simply need to move some data files from your C: partition...to DVD, flash drives, or another hard drive.

To see all partitions on a system...go Start/Run...type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter.  It will reflect your hard drive and any partitions on it...any other hard drives attached...and your optical drive (CD/DVD).
