During the past few weeks I've been getting the pop up message "Internet Explorer has stopped working." Followed by "A problem has caused Internet Explorer to stop working. Windows will notify you if a solution is found." Immediately after this about 50% of the time the page I was on was able to recover. The other half of the time I'm directed back to the Google Homepage. I am using IE8 and never had a problem until this started. Would anyone have any suggestions for trouble shooting or a way to remedy this annoying problem?

Try clearing your cache files and run Malwarebytes and your resident antivirus. See if you can update to IE9 and check the difference.

In addition to the excellent advice above, I would also suggest that you verify yo have the correct version of Java running.  Out of curiosity, is there any reason you have not yet upgraded to IE9?

Thank you for your responses. I have deleted the browsing history. I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes which found 19 items which I deleted and rebooted the computer.

When I try to find which version of Java I have I get the message "'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." It seems this message is common to certain versions.

My wife and I have both tried IE9. It seems like a downgrade rather than an improvement. I will continue to use IE8 for the time being.

This "IE has stopped working" pop up happens at random. It's not connected with any particular site or procedure.
