Some time ago we got a virus/maleware on our computer, It consisted of mainly Browser page re-directs to advertising and under processes, a process listed as scvhost.exe started consuming enormous resources ( up too 800,000 Kilobytes ) at the time ).

Neither Avira or Malewarebytes could find or detect anything. ( Avira removed several items but the problem persisted)

Repeating scans in Safe Mode did not work either nor did most online fixes tried at the time.

So we basically removed the computers access to the internet and it has worked pretty much as normal since then.

We recently needed to acess the internet again and have decided to try and clean it off finally and plugged it back into the internet.

The nature of the virus seems to have changed slightly as on Firefox or Chrome homepage it said there was no internet connection or there was a problem with dns, Yet antivirus programs upgraded and if you typed a URL into the browser it would connect us directly to the site.

We were able to download and run rkill.exe as well as malewarebytes.

Rkill.exe returned

* c:\windows\agrsmmsg.exe <PID: 236> [WD-HEUR]

1 process terminated

it also returned

* wscsvc [missing service]

* wuauserv [Missing service]

Even after running this malewarebytes found nothing.

Scvhost.exe doesn't seem to be behaving abnormally but now Chrome and Firefox are unable to connect to the internet at all, even using direct links.

I ran tdskiller.exe as well and it found and removed 1 threat

Rootkit.Boot.Pihar.b

but problem still seems to persist and Rkill.exe continues to detect the agrsmmsg.exe process and terminate it. as well as detecting the missing windows services.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

( note: we thought at first that there was a chance our network controller was out of date but we checked the drivers and everything seems to be functioning fine. )

Thank you for the fast response.

I will try to follow all of these steps and post the logs here as soon as possible.

Since i cannot access the internet with the computer in question I will download the recommended programs on a different computer and then transfer them over with a thumbdrive.

We currently still have Malewarebytes on it.

I will also try and download Avira Antivirus.

And thats everything. So far so good.

Anything else I should do or problems??

Edit: Just finished installing Avira Free Antivirus and ran a scan, it has 1 detection apparently

something called

SPR/Tool.Reboot.E

or

Reboot.exe.

Is this one of the tools you had me install or virus? quick google search said its part of reboot process and safe.

Moving it to Quarantine for now.

Understood.

I've already updated the Flash Player and Firefox

Was trying to update Adobe Reader but update died and i just recieved another issue with my internet connectivity.

I'm uninstalling the Java Applications and then I will try to update IE and Windows again as well as Reader.

Edit: Connection was unplugged haha *facepalm*

Adobe Reader and Windows updated as well as Internet Explorer.

The extra JAva programs are removed as well.

Everything seems to still be working fine.

I think my Anti-Virus is getting some false positives.

Avira running right now. and has picked up 12 Detections, Yet there are no symptoms of any kind that i can see

Here is the virus Scan report.

Is there any further danger or can i safely delete these files using Avira.

I think its false positives too.

You can make a restore point first then try to remove these entries.

If something goes wrong, restore windows with this point.

I recommend you to use Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials rather than Avira.

Okay, Creating the restore point and deleting and scanning again.

What are the reasons for using Avast or Microsoft over Avira?

and I was curious about what type of virus I had and how we might have gotten it and what it did?

Also thank you so very very much for your help. Its a huge relief to have the computer working and able to get online again.

What are the reasons for using Avast or Microsoft over Avira? Tech experience. MSE is user friendly and useful for a free antivirus.

what type of virus I had and how we might have gotten it and what it did? by downloading something from a disreputable site or downloading files using program such as uTorrent, Limewire, etc..

or by clicking on the flashing ads lolol

Haha, Flashing Ad it would be, I remember we got it while researching Recipes so probably accidentally clicked something bad.

Again thank you very very much for all your help.
