I am trying to install windows 7 on my brothers laptop but when i get to where do you want to install windows it shows no drives.

On the bottom it says No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation.

I don't know where to get the driver.

The computer is a gateway E-256M

Hello -

2 quick questions -

Are you trying to install on a clean new computer, or Updating from another Operating System (XP, Vista) ?

Are you installing with a New unused install DVD, or copied / cloned HP DVDs or CDs ?

Thank You -

I Am installing winodws 7 on it because well my brother was using it he got a bsod and now when the laptop starts up it says:

Intel® Boot Agent GE v1.2.45

Copyright © 1997-2007, Intel Corporation

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.

Operating System not found

I am using a windows 7 retail DVD.

About your second question...

I guess I'm installing it on a clean computer?

I bet it would be easier to just get into the windows XP OS and do an upgrade but i have no idea why it just stopped working.

When the OS did work i used windows 7 upgrade advisor so i know the laptop is windows 7 capable.

I do not know whether the drive is sata\ide\scsi.

Hi

"Media test failure" error is an indication of HDD is not detected.  Try the following steps :

1 ) Enter in to the BIOS and check if the HDD is detected there. Load "Setup defaults" and retry.

2 ) Remove the HDD from it's bay (usually located in the bottom) and reconnect it.

If the HDD is still not detecting, probably your HDD is gone.
