Partition 0   Partition ID:  Disk #0, Partition #0
Disk Letter: C:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number:  207E0980       Size: 29.3 GB
Used Space: 28.7 GB (98%)      Free Space: 614 MB (2%)

You have insufficient free space for Windows to operate as planned.  General consensus is that 10-15% of the Windows partition must be free space for that to occur.

I would ignore all errors generated until the free space issue is resolved.

I suggest that you move all data files (movies, music files, etc. which are stored on your C: partition to another storage area.

After that is complete, I would run the chkdsk /r command on the Windows partition.

<<76GB Maxtor 6Y080P0 SCSI Disk Device (RAID)(Software RAID): 39 °C>>

This confuses me...how can you run a RAID with one drive?

<<WhiteSmoke New Toolbar (Version: 6.11.2.6)>>

This seems to commonly be treated as malware, http://forums.anvisoft.com/viewtopic-45-1291-0.html .

Hi Louis and many thanks again!

I have cleared some space for my c drive however even computer management is showing a contradiction - the list view shows the total c partition to be about 29 GB whereas the display shows 44 GB -which is what it should be now.

I have scheduled chkdsk to run next boot so hopefully that sorts it!

Re WhiteSmoke I had removed that previously but system restore reinstalled it, so uninstalled again!

The RAID thing confuses me as I have used RAID before but only on external NAS devices. I was not aware of having set it up here or how I might have done so?????

Is there a way to change this- preferably risk free?

Many thanks again!

You might check your BIOS...one of the settings may be for RAID.

If so, turn it off.

I can't tell you much about what seems illogical to me, unless the report just reflects a BIOS setting.

You might initiate a post in Internal Hardware about that.

Ok thanks

I'll dive into the BIOS tomorrow.

One other thing - after chkdsk the partition size is still incorrect-any idea what might be causing this?

Thanks again!

Hi

The Gigabyte P35 board of your's have an option in BIOS to configure SATA in "RAID" mode (IDE, AHCI and RAID). It is possible that you installed OS while SATA set in to the RAID mode. System info tools will report it as RAID by querying in the BIOS.That is the only logical explanation i can think.

Thanks for all the answers

- I changed a couple of settings in the BIOS but nothing major (nothing specifically mentioning RAID) and with the space clearing I thought I would be bsod free.

However got another one last night and thought it might be down to the problem with the c drive size reporting.

If I go into computer management then disk management I get this:

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/4210/freespacec.jpg

Please note that at the top my c drive is listed as 2% free - of 29.34 GB (which I'm thinking may cause the bsods?) whereas in the graphical representation below it is showing as the full expected 44.51 GB.

I should have a lot more free space available to windows that would hopefully stop the bsods - I hope!

However, nothing I have done from checking RAID BIOS settings and running chkdsk has fixed this.

Any ideas please?

Please post a screenshot from Disk Management.  Start/Run...type diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter.

Hi

I never saw this partition size error before. Try the following step to check if there is a partition table error.

Download partition guru free : http://www.eassos.com/partitionguru-free.php

Install it and open. Select first HDD (Then second HDD ) and click menu item "Tools" then select "Check Partition Table Error" .

If it reports any errors, don't fix it. Just report what it says.

Thanks!

Here is the result:

I really don't want to take the reformat option!

One thing I should mention is the 2 hidden old os partitions on this disk but that should be okay, no?

Thanks again!

Hi

DBR means DOS boot Sector. This is the same as PBR or Partition Boot Record. http://www.datadoctor.biz/data_recovery_programming_book_chapter11-page7.html

Partition Boot sector is a critical part of every NTFS file system as it contains offset of NTFS MFT and code to load NTLDR. Also it contains critical information such as how many bytes per sector, how many sector per cluster and total sectors in a volume. What happens to you is that, your C drive boot sector is corrupted and that is why it incorrectly reports the size.

For more detailed info about NTFS, read  http://www.cse.scu.edu/~tschwarz/COEN252_09/Lectures/NTFS.html

Also it is strange that the remaining two hidden drives in the first HDD shows as "unknown volume". I suspect your experiments with the partitions caused this whole mess.

I am not sure about a way other than re-partitioning the disk. The only tool which may be able to solve the issue is "TestDisk". Restoring the backup boot sector with "TestDisk" may correct this issue but you need to backup all the data before experimenting with it. You can run "TestDisk from a bootable media. For more info about "TestDisk", read the below guides carefully.
