Hi,

I have an old Windows XP machine, and over the past few months Firefox has developed a browser re-direct problem.  I have not used MS Internet Explorer in years because it basically stopped working years ago.  I suppose that might have been my first sign of trouble, but I never addressed it.

So, given the above, a friend suggested I download and run Combofix.  Did a scan on 4/28 and now I have connectivity problems.

Anyway, I realize I did not properly disable McAfee during my first scan.  The recovery console was installed.

The end result was no more internet connection.  (I use a Netgear wireless router that I bought about a year or two ago).  The netgear hardware is looking for a connection, but the software cannot start.  "Network Connections" is empty.

So over the past few days I tried googling certain forums on this issue.  In particular, I tried this solution:  http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2010/07/internet-connection-down-after-combofix.html?m=1

No luck with that, so I tried something by the same title above in these forums...  I successfully disabled McAfee, and ran combofix the morning of May 2.

I can no longer connect with a flashdrive, and the CD burner won't work, and this is all new...  So it's not just the internet now, and I am at a loss as to how I can move forward. I am able to print, though.  So all usb devices have not been knocked out.  I can also access the external hard drive on my machine.

Somehow, I was able to print the reports, and I scanned them, but am unable to attach them here...  The most recent one of May 2 is 2.77 MB. connverted scan to txt, and am pasting below.

Can somebody help me or alternatively suggest someone with combofix expertise in New York City who can help me?

Thanks,
Paul

May 9, 2013 - I've made a correction with the log below.  Yesterday when I posted this, I had to print a hard copy of the log report, then scan that hard copy as a .pdf, then recognize text with OCR, and then save as txt.  I think formatting may have been lost, and page numbers were added, and OCR recognition can sometimes be wonky.  So...  to be completely accurate, I finally found a way to get the file off my computer using an SD card for my camera.  Below is the most accurate representation of my log (and thanks to all who have reviewed the issue):

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Run the following and see if you get your Internet Connection back.

Go StartBtn.gif > run box and type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns <-- (The space between g and / is needed) press the Enter key.

repeat with
ipconfig /renew

Then type Exit, hit the Enter key

Restart the computer normally.

How is it now?
===

If you can please download and run this tool.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.

1: DDS.scr (Not recommended if you use Chrome to download this .scr file. Use the other options.)
2: DDS.pif
3: DDS.COM

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results.
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.[/list]Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.

dds_scr.gif

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post. DO NOT attach the log.

Hi Nasdaq,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

So I did what you asked.  I typed
ipconfig /flushdns

I caught the directive to include the space between the "g" and the "/."

The response I got was as follows:

Could not flush the DNS resolver cache:  Function failed during execution.

So this did not look good to me, but what do I know?  I was an English major.  So I went forward with your next directive and repeatd with
ipconfig /renew

... And the response I got was as follows:

Windows IP Configuration

No operation could be performed on Local Area Connection wile it has its media disconnected.

No operation could be performed on Wireless Network Connection 6 while it has its media disconnected.

My USB wireless "antenna's"  lights flash intermittently, but the computer itself shows no indication of any connection existing.  Nothing has been physically disconnected from the computer at any time.

So I then typed Exit, hit the Enter key, and shut down.

I was unable to download the DDS software.

Thanks,

Pauletto

Check with your Internet Provider is you are connected or not.

When that similar light on my modem flashes I have no connection.

The flashing lights were not on the (netgear) modem...  They were on the (netgear) wireless network adaptor attached to the desktop itself.  I don't think it's the modem, but I will unplug and then re-plug in the modem.  I will leave the USB receiver in the deskop where it is, and restart everything.

I will also connect my phone to my home wireless network to determine whether the internet provider signal is coming through.

Ever since running combofix, I cannot even get the netgear software to open.  Also, there is no longer an icon in the lower right of the toolbar that addresses connections.  If the modem was down, there would be an icon indicating that no connection was present.

I have run combofix twice.  The first time was April 28th, and that's when the internet got severed.  The second time was May 2.

The combofix report I posted above was from May 2.  Should I share the report from May 28th with you as well?

Hi, I got home from the office and rebooted my modem. I connected wifi on my phone to my home network and it seems to work like a charm. Unfortunately, I still have no luck with the desktop. Combofix did something. I did something wrong with combofix, I should say. What more can we do?

Following steps involve registry editing. Please create new restore point before proceeding!!!
How to:
XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247

Download to your desktop this PlugPlay.reg file from this site:

Reg files for XP computer.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/win-services/xp/

Run the file and let it merge to your registry.

Restart the computer normally.

If that fails to restore you connectivity is there a way for your to re-install the (netgear) wireless network adapter?

Sorry I'm such a novice, but I guess you want me to download software from a computer that has an internet connection, save to a disk and then run it on my computer?

I am printing the microsoft support link you posted now and will review.  Can't respond until I get home tonight.

Thanks,

Paul

I just downloaded the PlugPlay.reg file and the DDS.pif file as well.  I will paste them both onto my desktop.

I never ran the DDS software.  Do you want me to do that first?  Did you ever want to see the original log from Combofix?  The one I posted is from the second time I ran it.  I did not properly disconnect McAfee the first time...

Thanks,

Paul

Okay, I got home and tried to fix the DNS issue, following that last link you sent.  Did not get far.  I was able to open up the services window, but there is *no* DNS Client in the list of services.  I checked the entire list.  It's not there.

Then I tried to set a new system restore.  Once I clicked on System Restore in the Accessories panel, and the message I got was as follows:

"System Restore is not able to protect your computer.  Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again."

So this seemed strange, since no program had been opened, but I rebooted the computer and got the same message.

So I was unable to run either the DDS or the PlugPlay.reg file.

That's where I'm at.

Paul

Hi

I was able to install and run the Microsoft Fix It software and apparently it was successful. What should I do next? Fix the DNS Client?

Thanks,
Paul
