Hello,

I have been having problems for about a week and I will try to summarize.

Computer:

-Self Built

-Windows 7 Ultimate x64

-Intel i7

-12GB Ram

-Windows resides on its own SSD ~ 64 GB

-(2) 6.0gb/s 2TB SATA drives - Applications & Media

First I got a notification about a week ago telling me my C drive was critically low. I had about 4 MB left of space. Turned out I needed to clean out my Downloads folder on my C drive and that freed up about 20+ GB.

No problems for about a day

Tried to download a very large file from the internet ~ 34GB (My download location for this download was specifically set to a different drive)

During the download the application could not store anymore temporary files on my C drive because it was full again.

Nothing was in my Downloads folder (C Drive) so after running Malwarebytes it located a couple infections in the following folder:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

This folder was the culprit. It was filled with about 1.5 million files of various sizes, most were only 1KB, but no large files. The total space was about 25GB which was why my C drive was full again

I was not aware I had an infection but thought it was odd that that deep of a folder was gaining data, especially since I don't even use Internet Explorer.

After deletion of the files inside the folder I ran some scans. I use Microsoft Security Essentials and I've downloaded Malwarebytes.

Both came back with traces of infection, some were backdoors, some were trojans. I quarantined, then deleted those files and everything seemed to be working fine except the previous folder mentioned is still filling up with data and after several scans my computer is not finding anything.

I ran some other tests (Including Combofix....whoops) and found myself getting bootloops (Windows would boot but immediately Blue Screen) however I was able to log on as a different user and could work the computer fine. I then obtained a copy of a windows 7 Ultimate so I could boot up and try to repair the issue. It said there was an error in Windows Recovery, automatically fixed it then booted up.

I am currently on my main User account (No blue screen yet, been on about 15 min) however my Outlook now just goes to "Not Responding" when I try to open it, so there is definitely still something wrong on my machine.

Like I said if it comes to a reformat and reinstallation of windows it isn't the end of the world because my Windows is on its own drive.

My next independant step would be a reformat and reinstallation, but I really don't want to have to reinstall all of my drivers and re-link all of the paths to my application installations.

Thanks in advance.

I'm now able to log into my main account and the content.ie5 folder does not seem to be growing. If you have any other advice or step to take let me know, but the machine already seems better.

Nevermind. The issue hasn't stopped. Since I posted those logs the content.ie5 folder is back over a gb.

All you can find is the Temporary Internet Files which is one of the hidden protected operating system file.

I would suggest you to try the following steps.

To view hidden files and folders

   1. Click on Start >> Open Computer >> Click on Tools. Under Tools, Click on Folder Options.

   2. In the Folder options window, click on the View tab. Under Hidden files and Folders , check on Show Hidden Files and Folders.

   3. Also, clear Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).

   4. Click on Apply and then Ok.

Now, all the protected operating system files and folders can be viewed.

   1. Click on Start >> Open Computer >> Click on the system drive .

   2. Go to this location. Users\userprofilename (ex john)\appdata\local\Microsoft\windows\temporary internet files

Alternative method to find the Temporary Internet Files

   1. Open up Internet Explorer >> Click on Tools >> Internet Options.

   2. Under Browsing History , click on Settings . You get a window Temporary Internet Files and history Settings.

   3. Under Current location , click on View Files .

click each folder you want to delete and press the Delete key from your keyboard. Then, click Yes to confirm the deletion. Please note that you cannot delete index.dat.

I appreciate the help you have provided so far, but I don't think you fully understand the problem.

I have long been able to view hidden files and folders and protected operating system files. That was where I found the folder that was constantly gaining data.

The folder extension where this is occurring is as follows:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

This is not the standard Users\userprofilename (ex john)\appdata\local\Microsoft\windows\temporary internet files location.

I have noticed that during the period of time that the Content.IE5 folder is growing I am also noticing an svchost.exe process that is constantly growing in the amount of memory used. When I end this process, the Content.IE5 folder stops growing, but shortly after the svchost.exe starts back up.

I should also note that I run a 64-bit OS, and this svchost.exe process that seems to be the culprit is running in 32-bit. The process shows up as svchost.exe *32.

my xfinity constart guard is now popping up over any device connected to my network saying that it is infected with a bot. Have you any more advice?

I believe it is automatically included from my ISP. When I get home after work I will check to see if it can be disabled. For example, I will be browsing the web on a smartphone and a popup will show from xfinity constant guard saying "your computer is infected with a bot" and I know for a fact I do not have any xfinity software on my smartphones.

I may have to contact xfinity directly to see what that is about.
