Hey. I am having trouble installing Linux Mint Mate on a 80Gb IDE HDD. - The installation (using dvd) exits part way through it (after choosing language for keyboard layout) with no error messages.

Please advise on what is best to try to solve this? Thank you

Did you first try using the DVD as Live...not installing? If so, did it find your hardware and connect online?

I looked at the release notes. Nothing there concerning install problem on desktops. Only warning was...

Don't use EFI on your Samsung 300E5C, NP700Z5C, NP700Z7C and 530U3C series, it might "brick" your laptop.

But you might want to read through the notes if you haven't done so.
Linux Mint 13 Release Notes - Linux Mint

You don't necessarily need to connect online during install. But you should in order to get your language support packages

and updates.

Will this be the only OS on the hdd? Have you tested the hdd?

It will be the only OS on the HDD. I ran chkdsk on it the other day - no bad sectors or clusters were found.

I'm wondering whether the Installation includes IDE drivers  (if not I suppose I could slipstream them onto a DVD using nlite for example).

- Do many linux installation iso files not include IDE drivers now?

I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on an 8 year old Dell with an 80 GB IDE hdd. The Mint LTS is based on Ubuntu 12.04.

Ubuntu installed without any problem.

I'm running Linux Mint 13 "Mate" fine on a 10 year old IBM Thinkpad T42 with a 60GB IDE HDD. It runs on either IDE or SATA.

Although Mint 13 is based on Ubuntu 12.04, that version of Ubuntu won't boot on that notebook. Mint added the code to make it work.
