Hello, please help if you can and thanks in advance for your time.

I use OneNote for school. I use the "print to Onenote" option rather than printing out my professors' lectures and notes but in the past two months or so some of the the slides or pages will import as completely black, or a few slides will be missing. I also noticed that it was taking much longer to print to one note, some taking three hours or more (if it was even able to finish without crashing). I've started breaking up the size and print only 15 to 30 slides at a time, but even that takes a long time. Many of my classmates use Onenote and they do not have the black/missing slide problem, but a few do have it take a long time.

I was previously using a free antivirus that I kept up to date religiously but my campus network stopped accepting that as an approved antivirus and the IT department made me switch to Norton. Immediately after it was loaded on my computer I noticed that everything takes longer to load, and it often freezes (mouse still moves but does not respond to anything I click or will not show anything I type), and sometimes crashes (reboots without me telling it too).

I often get a notification bubble telling me that parts of Norton are disabled (such as malware/spyware protection or proactive threat protection or something like that), when I go to Norton sometimes it shows that everything is working (they all have the green background), and sometimes one will actually be disabled (have a red background and the option to "fix"). I have never disabled anything but it will randomly be disabled.

There are probably some other things that I am forgetting.

From reading this forum, I noticed that you often request these:

Did you ever get Service Pack 1 to install? It looks like you're having problems with that. See here for ways to get that to install if that is the case: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/install-failed-for-update-kb976932-error-code/87324430-09e4-4023-a8c6-01b6fdcad962?page=1

Office can start acting up if you don't keep your OS updated.

Hi, I've been trying to install that update for 3 hours now. How long should it take? Am I just not being patient enough? I waited 30 minutes trying to download the update, then I canceled it and started going through the clean boot steps as laid out in the article but I don't know if I am doing that right. From the first step it deleted the update so each time I restart I try to check for new updates but after waiting 15 minutes each time I canceled.

I gave up on the clean boot proceedure and moved on to method two which involves downloading a troubleshooter but after waiting 20 minutes for that it tells me it will take 5 days to download 143 MB.

What am I doing wrong?

That sounds like a network latency issue. Are you using a WiFi connection? You might want to go to a speed test website and test your data speed. Try speedtest.net.

Once it reached 7 days to download the troubleshooter I canceled it. Shortly after that the update icon appeared in my toolbar, it is now recognizing that there is an update again. I've just started the installation. Hope it works this time.

Can I run the speed test from another computer on the same WIFI? I don't want to interupt the update now that it appears to be working.

So you are on WiFi. Short of finding an Ethernet connection you may just have to wait until late at night when fewer people are using the access point.

Those are OK speeds. Not great, but not bad. Like I said earlier, short of finding a broadband Ethernet connection, you may have to wait until others get off the WiFi access point. The more people who log on, the slower your data speeds will be.

The update installed but during the restart it showed that it failed to install and reverted to previous settings. The windows updater now shows a green sheild with a check mark and says "no important updates available" but under update history it shows that it failed again.

I just found my cable to plug into the router. Which approach should I retry first? The clean boot or the trouble shooter?

Thank you so much for your help. I'm sorry I'm taking so much of your time.

Not a problem. We've all been here. Start with the clean boot. If that doesn't work, move on to the troubleshooter.

During the clean boot proceedure what should I use to "determine if the problem is still occuring?"  I was attempting to run the update before, but I canceled the check for update after 10 or 15 minutes each time. Is that the correct problem? How long should I wait to determine if the problem is resolved?

Sorry for the long delay in responding. Try checking manually for Windows updates and downloading those that appear. If they won't download, or the download does nothing after about 10 to 15 minutes, then the problem is still occuring.

Also, when you try to print to OneNote, is the file you are printing from saved to your hard drive, or is it on a network or the Internet? Same with your OneNote notebook -- is that on your hard drive, or is that saved on a network or the Internet? If the answer to either is yes, the network latency with your WiFi could be causing that problem. Try connecting directly to the access point with an Ethernet cable, and see if that solves it.

In any event, you will still want to get the problem installing Service Pack 1 resolved. Did the clean boot work?

The clean boot did not work. I had someone else download the update and transfer it to my computer from a jump drive but that failed as well. I went through the troubleshooter, the windows update readiness tool, and I disabled the antivirus and non of them worked.

I have not had problems with OneNote this week, but I have been babying it and the powerpoints have been smaller and with fewer images or themes (not sure if that has anything to do with the blacked out or missing slides). When the problems occurred it was both with printing from files on the hard drive and ones that were on the internet.

I am still looking for ideas of how solve the update issue. From reading another forum someone posted that they were able to solve their update problem using .net framework. I have no idea what that is. Does that sound like something that would work in my situation?

Did the update readiness tool give you any specific error messages or warnings? They would be down at the bottom of the report, under Sumarry. At this point, it appears your computer probably has corrupt or missing files, and that's why the service pack won't install. Some Windows updates require previous updates be installed before those other updates will install -- if those files are missing or corrupt, the service pack won't install. If that is in fact the case, your options are some tricky troubleshooting options -- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619779%28WS.10%29.aspx -- or do a factory restore and reinstall all the updates. However, it's also possible malware has infected your system and that's why you have damaged/missing files. You may want to ensure you have antivirus installed and perform a full scan of your system.

.NET is a framework used by developers to create applications, and to run certain applications and Windows features like PowerShell. You can use PowerShell to install Windows updates, but it's also fairly technical and shouldn't be attempted if you aren't familiar with writing and running scripts.

Given that you were using a WiFi access point to access PowerPoint, the blacked out slides were probably images and/or themes with files sizes that were too large and failed to download. Again, try connecting directly to the access point with an Ethernet cable and see if the performance improves.
