I upgraded my Norton 2 days ago.   For the past 2 days I've only been uploading some personal videos to youtube via my external harddrive that contains only pictures and videos.   Today my laptop slowed down and then popped up some errors shutting down windows.   I rebooted and noticed I had lost Internet access and desktop theme, just the transparent look.   Also, an error says Asus WS Service stopped working, I did go searching for reasons for this happening and didn't have too much luck.   I did go into my services as instructed on a microsoft support forums and tried setting that service to automatic but it still shuts down.   I'm unable to do a restore since it states it is not working.   I did boot into safe mode and tried restore with the same result.   I then put my windows 7 disk and let it boot to repair my windows with zero success.   Now I'm stumped as to why my laptop suddenly did this....  is it possible that Norton update could cause this?    I also updated my husbands laptop and it is ok (since it's his I'm using since I have no Internet on mine).

Appreciate any assistance given.

my laptop is an ASUSTeK Notebook UL5oVT/UL50Vg Series

I'm looking at my system and it's telling me

processor: not available

Installed memory (RAM): not available  ( I know I have a Genuine Intel CPU U7300 @ 1.30 GHz, and 4 GB Ram)

64-bit Operating System

Windows 7 SP1

since I don't have internet on my broken laptop how do I 'publish' my snapshot with those instructions?  I saved it to the flashdrive but how do I get it to you here if I can't create a url link to post?  Besides all sections say this

Just did some more digging and find that the WS Service has to do with syncing, I had been noticing at the bottom of my firefox that I had an error every so often about sync not working.   But why would this render my system inoperable as far as accessing Internet etc.....?

btw, thanks for the help, I really appreciate this forum and the peace of mind it brings me.

Oh no, Asus WS Service is the Web Storage feature of Asus, I've never signed up for it and never used it.  Apparently, it made some changes in April around the time I've been noticing some popups about Asus Web Storage and just kept closing it out.   Is it possible that this WS Service compromised my system?    I want it out of my system and I want back my control.

Hi

From your log it seems that you tried combofix in your system. Are you aware that running combofix without supervision may damge your OS ?

Uninstall Norton and check if it caused the issue. You can re install it later.

The combofix was run back with gringo in malware/virus forums the week of April 14/13. Thanks for the insight though.   Uninstalling Norton will be another avenue I will follow if other fixes don't work.  The same update was done on my husbands computer at the exact same time without issue.

Hi

What kind of infection did you get ? . If it is a Rootkit or backdoor virus, chances are great that it may come back.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/491696/browserprotect-will-not-leave/  it was Delta toolbar and browserprotect issues.   Got them from a program update, no longer had any trouble with that issue.

OK, just an update I tried to run sfc /scannow but got the error "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

so I had to go into services.msc and manually start Windows Modules Installer, I then opened a cmd prompt as administrator and it ran and fixed some corrupt files but did not fix the issue I'm having.  I do have the CBS.log if you would like this posted.

I also went in and uninstalled Asus Web Storage and Asus Bank.  These were on the system since I purchased it 2 years ago and never used but the ASUS WS seemed to be an issue.   However, uninstalled these didn't change anything upon reboot.

Hope I haven't overstepped by not waiting for a response and this is why I updated my status what I have done so far.   I am in a bit of a quandry without the full use of my system.

Awaitin your response.  :D

Hi

How it works after uninstalling Norton ?

Do you have a Windows 7 DVD to do a repair install ?

I haven't tried uninstalling Norton yet and yes I do have a Windows 7 dvd although it isn't the same windows7 that was installed on this laptop although I do have a license to use the windows 7 disk on 3 computers 1 licence is currently in use on my husbands laptop, my desktop needs a new power supply so it's out of commission at the moment.

I was able to get system restore to a working condition using my Windows7 disk, it didn't work before so hopefully this will set it back to April 30, before any trouble began.
