Hey how are you?

I searched the forums trying to find a similar problem but I couldn't. If this has been answered before, let me know!

Problem -
When I use an application, whether it be Photoshop, Spotify, Google Chrome, it initially uses the right amount of

memory required for it. But once I start doing tasks, it starts requiring a SIGNIFICANT amount more. And it only

builds up, it never reallocates the memory. I'm letting Spotify sit right now without touching it, and by letting it

stream the song - it has gone from taking 12k memory to 50k - growing about 20 kb a second. Photoshop was

using a whopping 4.5 gigs with only a 9x6 150 dpi image with 12 layers.

Things are running increasingly slower until it reaches the program's memory limitation and it idles out at the

slowness rate.

Now I have used System Mechanic to defrag the memory - This put everything back at the level they should be.

But it goes right back to where it was within a few minutes. When I did defrag, the programs responded much

quicker but within a few clicks, returned back to sluggish behavior.

Some Background Information
I have done a fresh installation of Windows 7. I previously had a BSOD x00f after using System Mechanic 11.5

to defrag the computers registry. Never was a problem doing that in the past, but this time it was. I stay away from

using that now.

Sometimes the operating system does not load now and will hang at the underscore until it finds a different device to

boot. I have a feeling my hard drive is failing... My motherboard looks awfully hot and I have cleaned the dust out of

this but not sure if it has done enough.

Hi

Your system configuration is pretty good to run this programs without issues. This types of issues can be happen if pagefile setup is not configured correctly.

Make sure enough free space in C drive and also make sure "Page file" setting is configured to "System managed size" .

  1. Open System by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33_47., clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clickingSystem. (Or right Click on "Computer" icon in Desktop and select "properties")

  2. In the left pane, click Advanced system settings18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b_41. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

  4. Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.

  5. Make sure to tick mark the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.

If that didn't helped you, please post a snapshot of your system using speccy by following the below guide.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/323892/publish-a-snapshot-using-speccy/

Don't paste the output of Speccy, just copy the web link it provides.

Please download MiniToolBox, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/ Save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark only the following boxes:

•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
•List Minidump Files

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).

Hey Anshad, thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

350+ gb free on the hard drive. Page file setting was ticked and configured already.

I have restarted my computer since the post but I spent five minutes playing

with the same programs as before (Google Chrome, Adobe Photoshop, and Spotify)

to recreate the problem.

Here is the Speccy Screenshot as requested -

Hi BlondeyGill

Programs like 'System mechanic' and other registry cleaners are generally not recommended. What experts says is registry cleaning is totally unnecessary and may introduce more problems by removing keys needed by some apps. So i recommend to uninstall it.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/dont-believe-the-hype-registry-cleaners-dont-make-windows-faster/

Please follow the instructions below as a primary step.

1 ) You have a faulty Windows update installed - KB2823324

This update is canceled by Microsoft due to customers experiencing various issues. Some systems became unbootable after this update.   MS even forced to create a special recovery disk to restore the systems which is converted to paper weight after installing this update. Uninstall it immediately from the system. More info can be read from below links.

      http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38435

2 ) Scan your system for malwares.

I didn't see any Antivirus installed in your system. For now install the free version of "Malwarebytes" and do a full scan of your system. Remove any threats it detects.
After it finishes run another scan using ESET online scanner. Download link for both programs are below.

     https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/malwarebytes-anti-malware//

     http://www.eset.com/online-scanner-popup/

3 ) You HDD status shows 'warnings" in SMART data. Please perform a "comprehensive test" using Toshiba drive test.

Post back the results.

Anshad,

Apologies for the late response.

That was a great fix - thank you. Removing that Windows Update has increased the performance
significantly. Unfortunately the processes still take up more memory than they used to - although
more reasonable and now almost half as much before the uninstall.

I ran both MB and ESET -
MB had 2 infections in the registry
ESET reported 0 infections.

HKCR\scrfile\shell\open\command| (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE "%1") Good: ("%1" /S) -> No action taken.
HKCR\regfile\shell\open\command| (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE "%1") Good: (regedit.exe "%1") -> No action taken.

I'm not quite sure why it says No action taken - I did press delete and watched the status bar
that popped up as it deleted both.

As for the HDD diagnostic - I believe that test is for IDE. It wasn't letting me select my drive.
So I ran Chkdsk with all the options selected this time instead of the regular Chkdsk. I found
it interesting that the pagefile had bad indexes.

The problem still exists, just half as bad now that the bad windows update was removed.

If it helps diagnose any.. For some reason my graphics card subscore has oddly been rated

a 4.4... It used to be MUCH higher than that in the past. The hard disk has stayed a solid 5.9.

Hopefully that information can be of some use.

Hi

The check disk log you posted shows bad sectors in your HDD. Backup any Data immediatly !!! (to an external medium). We should use a proper HDD test tool to confirm that.

Toshiba is known not provide proper testing tools for their HDD. We can use "Seagate' Seatool instead. That is the best tool available to test HDD surface for bad sectors.

Download 'Seatools for DOS'  ISO from the below link :

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Burn that bootable disc using 'Image to disc' option. Refer this guide if you are unsure :

  http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-dos-master/

Boot from the CD and select 'Long test' and let it scan the surface thoroughly. If any bad sectors are detected it will display that (errors found). (If seatools reports no HDD found message, please enter in to the BIOS and change SATA mode from AHCI to IDE)

Yes, I backed up the hard drive when it first was slow!

Thanks for sending me the Seatools link.

Ran the test, said I failed the long test - passed the short DST test.

It probably is time to exchange the hard drive. When I started up the

computer this morning, I heard sounds during the BIOS load screen

that continued a little bit while it took a couple blinking underscores to

load the OS. Everything is pointing to a failing hard drive including the

slow speed.. I'm just uncertain why my sub score for my graphics card

is so low.

I really appreciate your help thus far Anshad, thank you.

Hi

Yes, your HDD surface got bad sectors and you should replace it immediately.

Don't worry about the scores. Probably it could be a driver issue. Updating the driver may solve it. Anyway when you replace the HDD you have to reinstall the OS. At that time don't use the driver CD came with the laptop. Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers for your system. Also download and update the latest BIOS provided in the Dell site.

You can buy Laptop HDD either from a local shop or from online. If you have any difficulty in replacing the HDD please post the exact model number and service tag of the laptop.

Thanks again.

I went with WD 500 GB. It arrived today, easy install. The bios loads quicker as well along with Windows 7.

Following your driver advice. If I have the memory problems again I'll repost here but looks like everything

is going well so far. This forum is awesome haha

Take care, best
