Hello

A friend of mine is at his wits end and has given me his PC to try and rescue. I work for a small IT company so I am his "expert"! But this bit of malwatre is beyond me.

He rang me last week, complaining that he had "lost" all his pictures and he thought he had a virus on his PC. Unfortunatly because he is a busy hospital consultant and I am a not so busy network installer, I couldn't pick it up for a couple of days. I say unfortunatly because he played around with it during this time, despite my instructions, installing and uninstalling various anti malware and AV programs. This obviously didn't work, just made my job harder.

When I got hold of it most of his documents were locked with the following message coming up when they were accessed.

File is encrypted

This file can be decrypted using the program DirtyDecrypt.exe

Press CTRL+ALT+D to run DirtyDecrypt.exe

If DirtyDecrypt.exe not opened сheck the paths:

C:\Program Files\Dirty\DirtyDecrypt.exe

C:\Program Files (x86)\Dirty\DirtyDecrypt.exe

C:\Users\[YOUR USER]\AppData\Roaming\Dirty\DirtyDecrypt.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USER]\Application Data\Dirty\DirtyDecrypt.exe

C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USER]\Local Settings\Application Data\Dirty\DirtyDecrypt.exe

This appeared when any photo or PDF was opened. If a word or excel document was accessed then it reported it as being corupt and if you recovered it, then the message above appeared. Not all the documents were affected, but 95% of the them were. All the affected ones had read only attributes. Strangely about 30GB of photos which were stored in the Olympus Program file were unaffected.

Because he had run some many different programs, the intial virus had been removed (he proudly told me!) Unfortunatly that meant i didn't have anything to look at. All his system restore points had been deleted up to the day the virus found its way onto his PC. Incidently he blamed (and i believe him) his daughter streaming video to the the PC as the cause of the infection. it was consistent with the time that changes started appearing.

Anyway, I restored back to the first point that I could and found the DirtyDecrpt.exe program. Of course i ran it and it was a standard ransomeware input screen which wanted you to put either a 100 euros or 100 pounds sterling kcash or something like that code it to decrypt the file. I obviously didn't do that.

I looked through all the programs that he had used before I got it and they included Mcafees (his ususal av) AVG, malwarebytes, maybe hitman I'm not sure if he downloaded that and most unfortunatly combofix (recommended by his hospitals IT dept) Now I know the rules about using combofix and posting on this forum (I have used the forum extensivly in the past although I haven't needed to post) but he not only used it but I think he deleted all the logs! Anyway, I can't find them and I.m not sure if he actually ran it, though there is a Qoobox folder.

Another strange occurence is that everytime you start the PC a UAC box come up with CMD prompt asking to run " C:\Windows\SysWow64\ cmd.exe"/C ""C:\users\Harish\Appdata\Local\temp\xoladmin

This will just not go away and demands to be run, which i will not.

All the existing documents and pictures seem to have normal file types associated with them no .aes or alike.

Any new documents being created now dont seem to be screwing up at all. It is very strange and any diagnosis is going to be complicated by Harish's cutting and slashing using all the different anti malware programs.

Anyway has anyone seen this program before? Google seems oblivious to it!

He has most of the files backed up externally but not all. I am presently attempting to move any of the ones that have not been locked.

The machine is a Dell WIN764 PRO SP1 PC. He is running Office 2010 and Mcafee which is strangely not working!

Any help would be much appreciated but I understand the problems he has created by his use of various spyware removal programs.

Thanks

The above was my original post in the "Am I infected" forum.

Since then I have tried to restore to another restore point as my friend was desperate for a file, this only worked in getting rid of the virus again but not the encrypted files. In other news, he did indeed run Combo fix and I have found the logs, there are traces of about 4 other anti malware products as well.

Jon Snow replied to the origanal post on the other sub forum with an interesting post about the binary code of his pictures being altered by the virus.

Unfortunatly due to my friends meddeling, any help will be harder to give, but I would appreciate any advice.

Many Thanks

Pat

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

step1.gif In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/493322 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

step2.gifIf you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from the following link if you no longer have it available and save it to your destop.

    DDS.com Download Link
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control can be found HERE.

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Hello,

I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you.

Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.
- Do NOT backup any unknown files ending in .exe, .com, .scr, .pif, and .bat since files of these types are more likely to be infected.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

----------------

Please do the following next:

:step1:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK

IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

:step2:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
DDS.com
DDS.pif

  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • Mark the option attach.txt.
  • Click on Start.
  • After the scan has finished, confirm the message with Ok.
  • DDS will automatically open both logfiles.
  • You can find them on your desktop as well.
  • Please post the content of those logfiles with your next answer.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
Information on A/V control HERE

:step3:

Please download GMER it from one of the below to your desktop:

  • Main mirror
  • Zipped version
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection
  • It is very important you do not use your computer while GMER is running
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER gmericon_zps951fd5aa.jpg icon
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan
  • If you receive a warning about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system click NO
  • Please check in the Quick scan box
  • Please uncheck the following:
    • IAT/EAT
    • Show All <<< Important
  • Click Scan
  • If you see a rootkit warning window click OK
  • When the scan is finished, Save the results to your desktop as gmer.log
  • Click Copy then paste the results in your reply
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your Antivirus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled

Note:

  • If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode
  • If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a Blue Screen of Death, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning

First of all thank you very much for helping me with this. It seems a very new varient and way beyond my expertise.

Since I restored back to a system point just after the infection happened, it seems to have gone. This was after my friend had run multiple antimalware and anti virus tools. (Including Combofix, I have found the logs for this if you would like them posted)

Unfortunatly all the files are still altered with the message that appears in the first post, several thousand of them.

After running the Defogger the constant UAC window nag trying to run  " C:\Windows\SysWow64\ cmd.exe"/C ""C:\users\Harish\Appdata\Local\temp\xoladmin has stopped popping up.

One other thing is the Mcafee firewall keeps turning off. I get the status warning, turn it back on and a few miniutes later it is off again.

I have pasted the contents of the three files below as per instructions.

Hi

For the encrypted files try this:

  • Right click on the files.

  • Select "restore previous version".

  • Click restore.

- This will search the volume shadow copy for backups.

I am analysing the logs you provided now.

Hi

YesI tried to restore the previous versions (where there was) last week but had one success after about fifty unsuccesfull attempts. The office documents just came up with "unable to open because of corruption etc" and restoring it bought up the DIRTY DECRTYPTION ransomeware screen.

Hi

Please download SystemLook from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1

    Double-click SystemLook_x64.exe to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    :dir
    C:\Users\Harish\AppData\Roaming\Dirty /s
    C:\Users\Harish\AppData\Local\Dirty /s

Click the Look button to start the scan.

When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Yeah sorry about not getting back. The PC will now not start! As I have explained the PC is a friends and he wanted it back to get it looked at under warranty. The MBR is probably corrupted as it loops but as it is still under warranty he wanted Mr Dell third party man to come out and look at it before I did anything!

He is due Monday and I will get back to you then. I still have copies of all the locked files if your interested at having a look at whats changed in them?

Hi
Double-click SystemLook_x64.exe on your Desktop to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

:folderfind
*Dirty*

Click the Look button to start the scan.

When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
